Mequon, Wisconsin, has a large senior community that makes up nearly a quarter of the population of 24,000 residents. The city is situated in Ozaukee County, where roughly 1,800 people are living with dementia. To meet the needs of seniors with dementia and their family members, the county is taking strides toward becoming a dementia-friendly community.
In addition to various local resources, families whose loved ones have Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia have access to a variety of care options, including 18 memory care facilities. Two of these facilities are located in Mequon, and there are 16 more in surrounding cities. Memory care is generally provided in community-based residential facilities that offer dementia-related services.
