"We visited Canterfield of Ocala. The facility was open, but the outside villas had not been finished yet, and that's what we were interested in. It was beautiful, and that would be my selection if I was going to one of the places. We saw the library, the dining hall, and the little snack bar, and we saw the main lobby which was lovely. We saw a couple of the apartments, but it was not what we wanted. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable about their entire facility. They offered us a meal, and it was very nice."

"I am very happy here at Buffalo Crossings. It’s a new 3-story building, and they have room for 108 people, I believe. If the Villages does anything, it’s done right. Everything is top of the line: ceiling fans, two-inch verticals. Anything that’s necessary is immediately taken care of. The halls are fabulously furnished, and the rooms have nine-foot ceilings. Everything is just gorgeous. The staff is qualified for their positions but it takes time for everybody to get the hang of things. They have people that come here and entertain us. We’re going to see a play on Sunday at one of the recreation centers, and we get to go see their final rehearsal. They’re going to bus us over there, which don’t have to pay for. We have exercise, and they take us out. There will be more things to come as they get more people here. I have almost 800 sq.ft. with two full bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. They have one-bedrooms and studios. They will have the memory care, independent living, and rehab, that way you can just stay here and move from one to the other. "

"A Banyan Residence was extremely expensive, but the people there were extremely happy and kind. My husband was in memory care and they had him sitting up in the wheelchair from early in the morning until bedtime often. I complained several times and said that they can't have someone sitting like that all day for a year and half. He needs to lie down and take a nap after lunch and so they started doing that for him. There was a lot of entertainment, where they would go from one entertainment to another and many people that are in charge of activities said, "This is not good for these people. They need to lay down and rest." You just cannot have lunch and put them into this big exercise room that had a huge TV there, and kept them going all day. That was not desirable, but they did many other things that were exceedingly good. The staff were extremely kind, always helpful, and always guiding. The food was horrible. One case was they had a little piece of dried-up, overcooked chicken, very thin, like a piece of paper, that you couldn't even cut with a knife and other things in the plate that you didn't even know what they were. They had two skinny little pieces of bacon and a tablespoon of egg. The Christmas meal was just a disgrace. They had a piece of whole wheat toast, a little piece, like a Pepperidge Farm size, and they put them alongside. No jelly. No butter. They put them in the oven and I said, "Why aren't you toasting it and giving it a nice piece of bread?" They said that they don't have a toaster. I said, "You have a couple hundred people and you don't even have a toaster?" That was just unbelievable. In the morning, no butter on the pancakes and syrup. I really complained and then they started changing things. The place is beautiful, but they are putting all the money outside, on the grounds. They have in many cases, a recliner, that you can't move (if you're really in a horrible shape, I guess you don't need it.) They have so many things going for them, but they're spending a fortune outside in landscaping. It is absolutely an oasis. When you have a memory problem or you're just sitting around staring, you don't need all of that."

"We had a really nice visit at Sumter Place Assisted Living, but it was just too big for us, and their activities were a little bit steeper than what we were used to. It was a beautiful place, and the accommodations are really nice. The staff who assisted us did a very good job of telling us what we would receive and what we would do there. There were a lot of activities, but most of them were things we didn't necessarily like. There were laundry services, a reading room, and a room where you can do puzzles. They showed us a 1-bedroom with a living room, a bathroom, and an extra room with a microwave where we could eat. The people who work there opened the front door for us and welcomed us, and they were very accommodating. "

"We put my father here, and it's wonderful. The staff is excellent. They call us for any little thing my dad might need or just to give an update on how he’s doing if he’s having a bad day. The apartment is really nice and has a nice window with a nice view. The food is excellent. The staff, from the cleaning staff to the RNs, are just wonderful. We’re very happy to have him in there. They’re exceptional. They have ice-cream socials in the memory care area where my dad lives. They have a history quiz and movie night with ice cream sodas, a library, and a "retrain your brain" activity every night, so they do a lot of things there."

"My friend moved to Casalia Gardens. It's clean and well-appointed. She has her own room and everyone's been very nice. It's a small place and they seem to care about their residents. She is in the memory care and they all seem to be very knowledgeable and very helpful. I have not tasted the food, but I have been there while they are preparing it and they prepare it fresh from scratch. The place smells wonderful when they're cooking. They do little crafts and coloring, and they have visiting therapy dogs that come in. She doesn't have a private bath, but she's only sharing it with one other person, and the other amenities are all excellent. She's getting what she pays for and she's paying less than where she was while getting more."

"It is in a very nice setting. The staff is great; all of them are really nice and very caring. They have three different rooms and allow pets. Mom really loves it there. The food is really excellent with an all-day menu and other menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that differ from day-to-day. They have over 200 activities there. "

"Hawthorne Inn of Ocala was an average facility, but the interaction I saw between the residents was excellent. They were interactive. It's good. We were in the dining area because it was around lunchtime, and Dad got to see the interaction of people there and was concerned about the language barrier. Most of them were only English speaking, and he's a Spanish-speaking 99%, He wanted to make sure that the location had some bilingual people or people who spoke his language so he could interact with them properly. We visited the three types of room sizes. They were adequate. The room size, for our standards for one person, was kind of in the middle range. It wasn't that big. The hallways were clean. Everything's OK. We went through a library area where the residents got to pick books and read. They had somewhat of a selection. It wasn't a huge selection. Then we stepped outside. In our opinion, the outside was not an appropriate interaction for outdoor activities because there was none, other than a small porch with a couple of seatings. You just kind of sit there and maybe bask in the sun, and that's about it. My dad is more of the outdoorsy type that he would like interactions with a garden or growing tomatoes, or there are animals in the facilities, or just basically gazing and seeing what's going on in there to kind of keep his mind occupied. I personally liked the wood floors. That made it a nice, very homey, and warm feeling. The staff was friendly. All the spaces that I visited were clean. I got a peek at their activity room or craft room where they were doing some painting or something like that, and it was small because this looks like a smaller facility than the other one we visited. I saw their menu and they had a variation of items."

"I visited Highpoint at Stonecrest. They have a swimming pool, and it's beautiful and new. I liked everything that I saw. The whole facility is a five plus. The staff was wonderful, very friendly, and very informative. Everything about it was professional. I did see the dining room. It's like a restaurant. The cleanliness was superior. We went in the lobby, which was very well organized, clean, and well maintained. There's plenty of seating. They had a snack bar in there. It's like a hotel lobby. To me it was superior. The only drawback I saw was that the cost to stay there was too expensive from what I can afford."

"I moved to Brookdale Chambrel Pinecastle independent living, and it's been good so far. The rooms are bigger than most of the places I have visited and it has a kitchen. I chose this place because it has a lot more to offer than other communities I've looked at and it's also nicer. I like that they have a bigger living room aside from the bedroom and the kitchen."
