Los Gatos is a community of over 30,000 people in the hilly southern reaches of California's Silicon Valley. Nearly 20 percent of Los Gatos' population is made up of seniors age 65 and over, many of whom have been diagnosed with some form of advanced dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease or Huntington's disease.
For seniors whose dementia is advanced, Los Gatos has 33 memory care facilities within its city limits. More facilities, along with assisted living and skilled nursing care, dot the hillsides to the south of town. These facilities are classified by the state as residential long-term care facilities, and all are required to hold a valid license through the California Department of Social Services Adult Care Licensing program.
