I toured Oakmont of Redwood City. They were all great. I would have been happy with any of them if I needed a place. Everyone was prepared when I got there. They have multiple movie rooms. They had a room for after-hours food where customers could help themselves to after-hours sandwiches and snacks and things. They had a rooftop garden area and it was nice with lots of seating for clients. They provided lunch for me and it was very good.

The rooms are beautiful and the building is beautiful… After that everything goes downhill very very fast. The staff which is the most important asset you can have for senior care is absolutely terrible. There’s no experience, they are young and come from a variety of very low end jobs that would not prepare them for the requirements of dealing with such fragile people. The entertainment and activities promised never happen. They’re supposed to be art classes, cooking classes of walking club, etc. For the residence of memory care of their days are filled with sitting in front of the television endlessly sleeping in their chairs. They hair and nail salon so proudly pointed out during the tour. Do not have anyone working in them. To say we were disappointed and spent an absolute fortune… Approximately 200 K… we just feel so lucky that we have secured far a better care elsewhere.

We finally moved my mother OUT of this facility and have many reasons that we felt the urgent need to do so. There is a severe staffing shortage here and no resident/staff ratio will be shared with us nor committed to by Oakmont. The rates are extremely high and the care we experienced was minimal. My mother and the other residents in the memory care side seemed to simply be parked in front of the TV for hours on end. The activities that we thought were a HUGE draw for my mom rarely happened because of the staffing shortage (their own words to us, not mine). My mother escaped the facility and we were not told nor was a report done or provided to us. My mother is completely blind and basic needs like assisting her to the toilet or cutting her sandwich so that she could eat were lacking. I once arrived for a visit with my mother but I could not locate her anywhere and the staff had no idea where she was or that she was missing. The same thing happened to my sister on a separate visit. We felt the need to stop by Oakmont every single day to ensure that she was getting nutrition and care. We did file a report with the Ombudsman.

I went to Sunrise of Redwood City. I toured their assisted living and memory care. I like that it was a complete care center where they don't force them to leave if they get too sick. The buildings were very nice. It's brand new. The person who assisted me was very knowledgeable. She answered all my questions. I saw that there was a lecture going on. The rooms were nice. There was a nice variety of sizes and designs.

It is a new facility. It's only been open for a month. So far, we've found the staff to be very professional and enthusiastic. They're working hard to figure it out, especially that my aunt is in their memory care center, behavioral issues which she certainly has. They communicate it as best as they can, figure it out, and talk it out with us. They communicate well with us about that. It's a beautiful, beautiful facility. It's brand new. What's nice about that is not just that it's brand new, but that they built it with assisted living and memory care in mind. The common rooms are large, ample, and nicely appointed. There are lots of different rooms for different activities. It doesn't feel as cramped and small as some of the other places we saw (which were nice) that were renovated from some other kind of building. This place has been built with a purpose in mind, and they did a beautiful job with it so spaces are good and rooms are nice. They have activities, but because it's new and my aunt's still trying to get used to it, she hasn't taken part in too many yet. I know that they have many. They have lots of things around in their memory care for textures and activities. They could sit at a table and do or feel like an enrichment activity. I'm not quite sure what the technical term is. I know that when she gets a little more comfortable there and is able to take part in more things, there's going to be plenty of things that she can do (both with groups and on her own). She just moved in 3 weeks ago, so we're still trying to get into transition. I have not had a full meal there, but the food looks good and the menu looks good. My aunt is happy with the food. She's a vegetarian, so it was important that they pay attention to that and they have been doing it. I haven't heard her complain at all about the food. Many of the staff are sort of young and figuring out their way. They're doing a good job with it. I know that they'll be fine in the future, but they still have some things to learn. They know that though, and they're working on it.
