What to Consider About Memory Care in Brazoria County

Brazoria County is part of the greater Houston area, located along the Gulf Coast of Texas. This is a state with over 380,000 residents diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease or dementia, many of whom are seniors aged 65 and older. Out of the total population of 346,000, it's estimated that over 10 percent of Brazoria County residents are affected by a memory illness. To treat and house these folks, there are 75 memory care facilities in the county.

The Texas Department of Health and Human Services licenses and regulates memory care facilities. These homes are considered Type B facilities, requiring special training and certification of all staff, overnight care and supervision of residents, and staff assistance in case of an emergency evacuation.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in

  • Brazoria County enjoys long, hot summers with highs regularly reaching well into the 90s. Seniors sensitive to high heat may be uncomfortable here. The mild winters with no snow, however, may alleviate the symptoms of some health conditions and the soreness of aging joints.
  • Texas does not levy a state income tax. This exemption also applies to income derived from Social Security benefits and retirement accounts. Families budgeting a loved one's memory care may appreciate the extra money.
  • The Houston area, including Brazoria County, has some of the poorest air quality in the nation, both for excess ozone and year-round particle pollution as determined by the American Lung Association. Those with respiratory conditions may want to take this into account. In addition to year-round pollution, particle pollution from nearby oil rigs in the Gulf affects the overall air quality here.
  • Brazoria County, as part of the greater Houston metro area, is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care such as Houston Methodist Health Center and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
