Lake County, which is situated in northern Indiana, is home to about 486,000 people, including a senior community that makes up 16 percent of the population. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, about 13 percent of seniors receiving Medicare benefits are living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
Memory care facilities in Lake County, as in all of the state, may also be called dementia special care units. Some DSCUs have their own dedicated building that serves only those with dementia; others are situated within assisted living facilities that specialize in multiple levels of care. Lake County has four memory care facilities, which are located in the cities of Merrillville, Hobart, Crown Point and Schererville.
