I am/was a resident of this facility

I was at Rittenhouse Village at Portage. I left because it was too expensive. I had one free meal a day, and in winter time you had to go get it, so it was a waste of money. The space was very nice, but the price became prohibitive. The meals weren’t that great. Some of the staff members were very nice and some weren’t.

My mother has moved into Rittenhouse Village. It's been very nice. She has been very happy there. The rooms are very nice and very comfortable. My mother is very happy with the staff members. She said they all know her by name for the short time she has been there. The dining is restaurant-style. There are people who individually wait on the tables. They have bingo, exercise classes, and field trips to the store. They have a library, too. My mother hasn't attended too many activities, but they offer everything.

We went to Rittenhouse Village. Everything was nice. We had no problem with it. It was all compact and very available. We liked it. It was very neat and clean. The staff members were very pleasant, very nice, and very informative.

The one thing they never screwed up was cashing the $2500.00 plus a month check for their “services”. My elderly parent was given another residents powerful narcotic pain medication and rushed, traumatized, to the Emergency room. My elderly parent has terrible arthritis and can’t shower without “assistance” which they were supposed to provide. I found my elderly parent, more often than not, filthy, in a soiled depends undergarment. Often when I sought help to clean my arthritic elderly parent it was not there. I was told you can shower your parent, they bathed you when you were little, by one of the nursing staff!? And, of course, I ended up showering my elderly parent frequently. There’s nothing more traumatic than finding your elderly parent on the floor when checking to see if they’re safe. My family and I paid for the depends undergarments required, and if you don’t write the residents name on them they “disappear” somehow. These undergarments are not cheap! The cleaning staff does a poor job, at best, keeping the residents rooms clean. My advice, look closely before you subject your elderly (The Greatest Generation) or disabled loved ones to Rittenhouse! I am a proud military veteran, like my father and his father before him. I have not exaggerated or embellished this review or used a pseudonym. My elderly parent has since moved from Rittenhouse and my family and I are relieved.

I visited this facility

The facility as a building is aesthetically rated "good" in my opinion its the same old boring dark decor and colors you see in most assisted living facilities. It could be cleaner. Carpets had spots and in the entry it appears there was new carpet in a few areas but the old carpet too. Weird. The public bathrooms are utilized by residents and had strong odors and also excrement on stool. I was bothered by the many residents I saw laying around sleeping everywhere and many that were obviously not appropriate. I even saw a geri chair. My mother is looking somewhere to spend her twilight years in the company of alert and appropriate people she can socialize with to quell the sting of this HUGE adjustment. The staff were friendly enough. I guess I had higher expectations than the owners. I also observed the CNA staff struggling to handle a very inappropriate male resident that was combative. I would NEVER want my mother to witness this. How concerning and shocking to see this. The staff really were wonderful handling the situation but the situation shouldn't be there to deal with at all. It appears they have lowered their expectations of residents to fill beds and quotas. That tells me they are more concerned about the bottom dollar....not making residents first priority for a wonderful last few years experience. Lucky for us we aren't in a position to make any decisions immediately but this facility will never be a choice for us. I would also like to add I toured the memory care unit and found it to be very depressing. I watched for about 20min all the residents in a circle throwing a ball around NONE of them were interested or had the mental acuity to participate, Most were just sitting in their chairs sleeping and drooling and all of them had food on their shirts/pants. The unit had a putrid odor. Dirty carpet. spots all over the floors. residents smelled of urine. I saw the staff toilet all of the residents in one common bathroom........that totally disgusted me. I didn't see any activities to promote stimulation of memory or interaction. And one male resident was having a complete meltdown and yelling. Very unorganized and chaotic. The memory director just sat in her office on the computer. Didn't appear to be a grand memory care unit the "tour guide" led us to believe. And for the price these people charge I would expect the red carpet to be rolled out. Thumbs down on this place.

Ritternhouse is perfect for my mother-in-law because it is not assisted living. She is in her own villa with a bedroom and two baths. She is still very independent. It seems like a great place, and it is close to my wife and I. The people working there are fantastic. We have nothing but good experiences since she has been there. The villas are fantastic. It is a two-bedroom duplex. They have tons of activities. They play cards. They have trips. They have socials, happy hours, and everything.

Everything Rittenhouse is very nice. The staff is very efficient, kind, caring, and professional. We are totally pleased. My mother has already been here for two years, and the person that I just moved in is my aunt. There are all kinds of activities here. They have games, entertainment that come in, and a variety of activities. I think the apartment is spacious. It is more than enough for a senior.

Rittenhouse is a newer facility. It's a very nice, very clean facility. The staff seems fine. Mostly everybody seems very happy, but I think that they probably need just a few more activities for the seniors. They have certain days where they take them to places. The food to her is a little bit to be desired. They've gone through a few cooks, and that's been her issue. She's diabetic and according to her, they don't seem to eager to cater to too many of the diabetics. She's given a lot of starchy foods. The food doesn't taste good there, either.

My family is just starting to look at options for our 91 year old mom. While I have talked to the Rittenhouse representative, Dawn, from Merrillville, my brother was talking to representatives in Portage, where we wanted to focus on. We made an unannounced visit with other family members (not our mom) yesterday (a Saturday), and were highly impressed. There is also an opening right now for a shared apt, so we unexpectedly put down a deposit, having met the other roommate and knowing she will become a wonderful friend for our mom. We have a month to make this transition for our mom too! While I'm not looking forward to talking to mom about leaving the home she built with our dad in the 1940's, I am very encouraged by everything I saw at Rittenhouse, and know it has everything mom will love (Bingo, puzzles, served dinners, happy people, etc). Most importantly, I'm a speech pathologist and have worked in many nursing homes, so I personally looked at important hints regarding the tone of the building. A kitchen worker smiled and said hi to me as she walked by. The director talked about maintaining dignity and as much independence as possible for the elderly. Corners were clean, and there were good smells throughout the halls and rooms. I have it set up to take our mom there next week for Uno and lunch. Honestly, I almost want to live there! Again, this is the hardest thing ever to do. I'm the youngest of her 6 adult children and I still consider her my best friend. But even I'm excited for her. Now we just have to convince her.

Mom is at Rittenhouse. The facility is beautiful and it looked like a hotel. It's very clean. The staff are very caring and they are all about helping everybody. They are very nice to everybody that comes in. The apartments are very nice, spacious and also very clean. The food is good and the dining room is beautiful. They do activities like they play cards and bingo. They polish their nails and do their hair. They have Christmas parties and choirs come in and sing for Christmas carols. They have a bus that takes the residents out. We're very happy with them.

I chose Rittenhouse Senior Living for my parents because it is within 5 miles from where I live. In fact, they have just moved in about a month ago. I like what they offer and I think this is a safe place for them. This place is wonderful. My parents can go everyday and have one meal in their assisted living dining area. There are also a lot of activities that my parents can participate in. The staff members are wonderful people. They really care for their residents and everybody is treated like a family there. The facility itself is very clean. It is just three years old and their little homes are all new. It was a major transition for both my parents and they are missing their home of 44 years, but they're satisfied in this facility and so far, so good.

I am a friend or relative of resident

We began looking for assisted living for my parents, who are in their 90's. After checking the area we knew Rittenhouse of Portage was for them instantly. Nothing in the area compares to Rittenhouse and what they have to offer. We compare it to a 5 star hotel. We definately give Rittenhouse a 5 star plus. The management, all personnel, the facilities, location, food and activites are wonderful. They enjoy the activites planned daily and being with the other residents. The professional staff is so helpful and always go that extra mile to help in any situation. They have greatly exceeded our expectations and we would definately recommend Rittenhouse of Portage to anyone ready to make the choice and move to a great facility.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

It is never easy on the individual entering or family when the time comes to take this step. Our research found very few differences between various facilities until we visited the Rittenhouse. From the first time we visited, something was different. Of course, it was new, clean, and a great location but in addition, there was family feeling to this place, a genuine care and concern for the residents by everyone. Now this was just a feeling initially and we could not confirm if it was real. Our father moved in Oct 2011 and we can now say with certainty that this place is different. The difference is the management staff. They know their business, they understand how to deal with difficult situations, they are extremely accessible, professional, responsive and caring. Assisted living facilities are not perfect and all have issues that come up from time to time. However, we have been pleased that our concerns have always been addressed immediately and handled professionally. All of these facilities are only as good as the staff, and is it clear that the management team has trained and shared this vision with the staff. As long as the current management is in place, we have no hesitation recommending the Rittenhouse of Portage.
