Schenectady County Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services(518) 382-8481, ext. 9-313The county’s Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services is the designated Area Agency on Aging, meaning it receives federal funds to provide free and low-cost services to residents aged 60 and over. Through NY Connects, it offers information, assistance and referrals to help older adults find resources that meet their needs, and it assesses seniors needing long-term care services through its Expanded In-Home Services for the Elderly Program.
Veterans Affairs(518) 377-2423Schenectady County’s Veterans Agency advises veterans on the benefits available to them based on their service in the military. Its officers help veterans determine what paperwork is needed to apply for benefits and respond to queries on behalf of the veteran until the process is complete. Through the office, qualifying veterans can apply for VA pensions, Aid and Attendance benefits and service-related disability compensation, as well as receive help determining their eligibility for veterans’ home placement or VA health care. All services are free.
Capital Region Retired & Senior Volunteer Program(518) 459-2857RSVP is a nationwide program that provides community volunteer opportunities to those aged 55 and over. Through this program, older adults serve their community in the capacity that suits them, as little or as often as they want, in exchange for perks such as invitations to appreciation dinners, regular newsletters, and one-on-one assistance connecting with volunteer opportunities. RSVP partners with 70 organizations in the Schenectady County region, including hospitals and healthcare organizations, nonprofit organizations and schools.
Health Insurance Information, Counseling & Assistance Program(518) 372-5667HIICAP is a federally funded program that provides statewide assistance to Medicare-eligible residents in Schenectady County. Through this program, trained volunteers help seniors evaluate their short- and long-term care and prescription drug needs and make educated decisions regarding health insurance. Volunteers aren’t licensed to sell insurance or affiliated with any insurance carrier, so they can answer questions and provide unbiased information regarding available prescription drug coverage plans, Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicaid waiver programs.
Glenville Senior Center(518) 374-0734The Glenville Senior Center is recognized as one of the most active senior centers in the region, offering a broad array of social and recreational programs for older adults. It’s open to those aged 55 and over and has about 1,100 members. Activities include sports leagues, guest speakers and social events that encourage engagement, and regularly scheduled exercise classes and congregate meals that promote wellness.
