My father is in a place that is close to my brother and sister in Saratoga Springs, NY. They're doing outside visits, so I was never able to go inside. My father is at the Home of the Good Shepherd. That has been the hardest part now. We couldn't visit him in the hospital when he broke his shoulder, we couldn't visit him in short-term rehab, and now the only visiting we're able to do is outside. We have been overall pleased. My father has been diagnosed with some level of dementia, but he is not in a memory care facility because there isn't a room. I do think there's room for improvement there, but I think they're doing the best they can. We would be able to do more for him if we could actually go into the facility and things like that, but I think overall, their care has been good. He likes the dining room, but he is just not in an ideal spot right now. We like him to be in memory care but one that's going to have activities that are appropriate for him. He is a former attorney; he's more of an intellectual. Well, they call it enhanced assisted living.

I toured Saratoga Memory Care Residence . It was just very bright. The people there had walkers, and there were wheelchairs, but a lot of people were walking around. A lot of it seemed less depressing. It just seemed brighter and more people that were more alert and doing more things than the other place I went to. The woman who gave us the tour was excellent. And then I observed other workers there, and they interacted very well, a lot of them knowing everybody's name. They have a staff member in every hallway. It's a circular type facility, you start at one place and then you walk, and then you come back to where you started. And in each hallway, there is someone there. I like the security on the doors. They have a wonderful outdoor area, where they can walk on their own. It was secure. There was what looked like a very nice hair salon place. It just was more modern. If you're offered a choice of two meals, it was set up almost to look like a restaurant, which I liked. They have other rooms for activities. So I like that it was a separate dining room and it looked like a little restaurant. In the courtyard, they have raised beds and they do their own vegetables and incorporate them into their dinners and so forth, another thing that I thought was very good.

The woman who runs the assisted living is a bully who rarely smiles. The staff is constantly changing so they forget to give my mom meds, don’t know what she needs, and when there is an issue - my mother absolutely needs me to be her advocate otherwise I think she’d be at times neglected. For a variety of reasons, I can see how an elderly person living in this environment would decline. Bad energy from the top.

Home of the Good Shepherd was a clean and lovely facility. It was an excellent place, and everything about it was great. The residents appeared to be happy. The staff who gave us the tour was very welcoming, very professional, and friendly. It was a very positive experience. They had studios and apartments available. The rooms were spacious, looked comfortable, and pleasant, with lots of sunshine. They took us to the dining room and showed us the meal choices and the alternatives. It looked like it would certainly meet your needs as a priority. It was a lovely place, no question about it.

The facility itself is very clean and kept up. The activities they offer are minimal where my father ends up sitting in his room most of the time. The food is of poor quality and pre made often sitting for hours before being served. For the amount of money my family pays for my dad's care the administration keeps raising the rent and cutting back on food cost and any programs. The staff i feel bad for overworked and always understaffed. It has its good points but definitely wouldn't recommend.

The Home of the Good Shepherd on Church St. in Saratoga Springs has gone above and beyond my expectations of care for my elderly parents. They take the time to get to know their residents and their families. They are caring and focus on each person and their specific and unique needs. Residents and visitors are greeted warmly with smiles and hugs. The employees are happy which in turn makes for a friendly environment. I love the fact that the residents wear their own clothes and have their own furniture. The visiting hours are open which is very convenient. And, I am continually blown away by the meaningful activities offered every day. There is a beautiful outdoor courtyard for walks and fresh air. The meals are prepared with residents needs taken into consideration. A truly wonderful place!

Home of the Good Shepherd is spotless, and the rooms are spacious. They have a whole bulletin board of activities at different times during the day. We saw ladies playing games in one of the common rooms. They had a library, but their common rooms were not that large.

I would never recommend The Good Shepherd; they’re absolutely awful. They did offsite activities, but my dad cannot participate, and he just sat in his room or on the porch. They accepted father with his mobility issues, but when he was there, we got daily phone calls asking us to come take care of him because they can’t deal with them. I thought that’s what we’re paying them $7000 a month for. He lost his mobility there.

We toured Home of the Good Shepherd. My mother knew about this place, so we took her there. Our experience with it was OK. The rooms were adequate. The staff was nice. The facility was in a good location.

The rooms of the Good Shepherd are bigger, brighter and more up to date. The common areas are cleaner and brighter. They have nice outdoor spaces that you can go into. They catered a little reception and it was very good. They had more activities like music in the common spaces, exercises, and memory games.

My dad lived at Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs, for about 10 months, before his passing this last April. We had a great experience there. They are a warm caring staff, professional. The Saratoga Springs facility is for relatively high functioning residents.... and he made many friends while there. My father felt fortunate to have found a place that felt like home after a relatively short time.

Home of the Good Shepherd was an advanced assisted living. I even tasted their food, checked out their dining area, the presentation, everything, and they're pretty much run in the same price as other facilities. The facility itself was exceptionally clean. The grounds were really nice. The staff seemed to work well together. I also saw their clients and just by watching their faces, they seemed to enjoy the staff as well. The management stands out the most. I paid attention to the fact that they knew every client by name when we passed them in the hall. Some of the other facilities couldn't help me because they just couldn't deal with the oxygen that my mom needed. But here, they talked to me about the physician, the transportation and the oxygen use for my mom.

I go by Home of the Good Shepherd quite often and the facility seemed nice. It's a facility for people who need high level of care. I saw people in wheelchairs. We did look at a couple of rooms and the main thing that I could remember was that the space was about half and the price was about double from where my mom-in-law's at.
