The Benson Center provides social and recreational activities for those aged 55 and over in the Sandy Springs region. It has three levels of services for individuals who are independent, semi-independent or semi-dependent and offers classes such as art and computer programs, therapeutic activities, health services and aquatic programs.
The county’s Department of Seniors Services administers a variety of programs to promote the quality of life of seniors. It hosts free online classes on weekdays to cover topics such as life enrichment, art, fitness and computer skills, and it provides transportation services to supplement those provided by assisted living facilities. The department also operates STAR line, a free information and referral service for those aged 60 and over.
Empowerline is the Area Agency on Aging for Sandy Springs and the surrounding area. This nonprofit agency administers the statewide GeorgiaCares program, which provides free health insurance options counseling to help older adults understand Medicare benefits, determine eligibility for Medicaid and compare long-term care insurance options. The agency also provides information and referrals for community-based services and has a long-term care ombudsman program for those in assisted living.
