What to Consider About Memory Care in Queens County

Queens County is a heavily urbanized neighborhood that contains the borough of Queens and historic neighborhoods such as Queens Village and Jamaica. Over 2.3 million people live in Queens County, and at least 15% of residents here are seniors aged 65 and over. For seniors with Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's chorea and other forms of dementia, Queens County has three memory care facilities to provide care. These facilities, like all residential care properties in the state, are licensed and regulated through the New York State Department of Health Adult Care Facility Services office.

  • The weather in Queens County is generally warm in the summer, but cool and rainy in the winter and spring. Summer highs average 85 degrees in July, but dip to 26 degrees in January, which can be problematic for seniors who are sensitive to the cold. This part of New York City gets over 46 inches of rain a year. New York City gets snow in the winter, but amounts vary widely from one year to the next, partly due to the proximity of the coast, which bounds Queens County on both sides.
  • Seniors' cost of living in Queens County can be high by national standards. Across all categories, most costs are double the national averages, though there is variation in many categories. Median home prices in Queens County, for example, are $650,700, which is nearly four times the national median. Healthcare in Queens is more affordable, at roughly 99% of the typical cost nationwide.
  • Crime rates in Queens County are high in several categories, but below the national average in others. Property crimes such as burglary and larceny are well below the national rate in Queens. Violent crime is more common in the borough, with some categories of reported crime rising to nearly double the typical national rate, though seniors in memory care generally have round-the-clock supervision.
  • The Queens County area is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care such as NewYork-Presbyterian Queens and Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
