Revere, rich in history dating back to the Colonial Era, is a suburb of Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. This is a state with over 130,000 diagnosed Alzheimer's and dementia patients, mostly aged 65 and older. About 15 percent of the 54,000 people living in Revere fall into this age group. Many of these seniors may need accommodations in memory care facilities. To care for them, Revere has over 50 memory care facilities, with more in the greater Boston metro area.
Memory care facilities in Revere are regulated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which stipulates security measures for residents, staff to patient ratios and around-the-clock supervision. State law requires staff in these facilities to have specific training for memory care. This includes both assisted living facilities that have separate memory care wings as well as Alzheimer's only treatment centers, referred to as “Dementia Special Care Units” (DSCUs). Other memory care facilities attached to assisted living communities are called “Special Care Residence” (SCR).Â
