Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Ridgeway

Seniors in Ridgeway have a number of options to help cover the cost of assisted living. To supplement room and board costs, the state pays an optional state supplement (OSS) to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients living in CRCFs and limits room and board charges for residents who are eligible for Medicaid. Personal care in residential settings is covered under South Carolina's Medicaid State Plan for seniors in CRCFs who are receiving the OSS

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Ridgeway

Originally known as New Town, the small, historic town of Ridgeway is located in lower Fairfield County, and has a modest population of 350. Around 17% of these residents are aged 65 and older and may require the care services of an assisted living facility.

In Ridgeway and throughout South Carolina, these facilities are also known as community residential care facilities (CRCFs) and are licensed by the state Board of Health and Environmental Control, Division of Health Licensing. There are 34 of these facilities available to seniors in Ridgeway and its surrounding communities.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Ridgeway

  • Though it's small in size, Ridgeway is big on history. The town is home to a variety of historical sites and cultural attractions for seniors to explore, including the Ridgeway Museum, historic homes and the World's Smallest Police Station. Active seniors can also enjoy recreational opportunities at the nearby Lake Watertree State Park.
  • Summers in Ridgeway are hot and humid, with temperatures in excess of 90 degrees. Some seniors may find this heat to be overwhelming. Winters are mild with little snow and a low of just 32 degrees.
  • Seniors looking to save on daily living costs find Ridgeway's low overall cost of living to be very appealing. At an index rating of 83.7, it falls below both the U.S. national average of 100 and statewide average of 88.5.
  • Ridgeway has no facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness, with the nearest major hospital located in Columbia.
  • In South Carolina, there is no tax on Social Security retirement benefits and seniors receiving any other form of retirement income are eligible for a $15,000 deduction. This could make more funds available for Ridgeway seniors to put toward the cost of assisted living services.
  • Ridgeway's low crime rates may offer seniors peace of mind. Measured on a scale to 100, the town is rated 13 for violent crime and 26.4 for property crime. These numbers are below the U.S. national averages of 22.7 and 35.4 in the same categories.
