I visited this facility

I went to see Harbison Shores. They were relatively small in terms of numbers of residents, and I think that was a plus. The building facility was very nicely arranged, like the way the rooms were set out for gathering and for meals. They had very nice landscaping, even around the parking lot. There were enclosed courtyards for residents to be able to enjoy being outside without being on the loose. The indoor decor had been worked on recently and it looked very nice. They were in the process of updating their decor, too. They had medical appointments available with visiting doctors, which was a plus. They had a good activity area for memory care patients. I thought they had a lot of thoughtfulness about giving them some activities that resembled ordinary household chores, but that were in a safe area. I met the marketing lady and two of the activity directors, and they were all very friendly and engaging with the residents. The activity directors were actively working with residents when I was going by.

I visited this facility

My friend likes Harbison Shores. She is leaning towards this place. I like that the staff were very friendly. I was really impressed with the size of the rooms and the friendliness of the people. It was just a really good fit for my friend. They supply appliances in the apartments. It's like a mini kitchen. They have a regular-sized refrigerator, but you supply your own microwave. They supply all three meals, which is a plus. Plus, cable and internet are provided with the amount that you pay. Another plus is the little security pendant in case you fall which also is included. The person who took me around was Amy, and she was wonderful. She was very sweet and took her time. We knew she had another appointment very shortly after us and there were people moving in, but she still took her time with us. She was very good at answering any questions, and she didn't rush us or make us feel like she had another appointment coming up. I appreciated that, too. We got to see the food and it looked good.

We are choosing Harbison Shores for my mother. I was very impressed with the community itself. It's smaller, and I didn't want to put her somewhere that was too big. The staff was amazing, and everybody we talked to. She will be in a beautiful apartment and it has all new flooring. It is very well taken care of. It has a kitchenette, a living room, a nice bedroom, a big walk-in closet, and a nice bathroom. We saw the dining room and it looked very good. They had a theater area where they could go and watch TV with each other. They also had outside garden areas.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We have placed my mother-in-law into Harbison Shores. The facility is nice, and the people are good. We met with the director, and she explained how everything works. We had visited some other places before, and this one didn't require a financial background check and all. It's a you-pay-your-monthly-rent kind of situation, which would then be less of a hassle. That's probably the major thing why we chose them. The security of the building is adequate. We've been happy with their care, too. The staff is good, and the caregivers are good. The nurses took the time to listen to our concerns. We had adjusted her meds a couple of times, so I would rate them high. We have not tried the food, but we always asked her what she had to eat, and she's always said that it's good. We've heard them do some arts and crafts, and they had a little picnic.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I placed my mother in Harbison Shores and it's comforting to know she's in a place where she's cared for. It's a very nice facility with outdoor space and good food, and she is regularly taken care of in terms of bathing. They have a nice spa-like bathroom for the residents, and just very nice and caring staff. Her room is very clean, has lovely accommodations, a bright place for my mom to be in and enjoy right now. It's more like a studio because she's in memory care, so they're not like apartments. The amenities are physical therapy, they had doctors that visit regularly, they have ongoing activities, and a calendar with lots of activities. Someone comes in and plays music for the residents, and there's a lot of socialization for the residents. They have an activity room and a courtyard, and where the TV room is, they have a porch over there. But really, what distinguished them are the bathrooms. There are new walk-in tubs, great amenities in the shower, a nice seat, and a nice little chair. I went over last night to get help with the bathing because she was still having a little difficulty trusting. The facilities are quite nice, like the warm tile and that kind of thing. We had one little incident but we took care of it.

I visited this facility

Harbison Shores had just about everything that a person would need for memory care. The facility was very nice. They had everything that other facility had, but it was a little pricey. They had a library facility, a beauty parlor, large dining areas, and a room where the residents could go and watch television. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable, and encouraging.

I visited this facility

We toured Harbison Shores, and it just was hands down winner. The price was relatively reasonable, although none of them are super affordable. It looked clean and well-kept. You could tell that everybody was well cared for and well regarded. The rooms were really nice. They felt more like an actual apartment and not assisted living. We're only looking at assisted for my mom. Amy, the lady who gave us the tour, was fantastic. She just really took her time, and we didn't feel rushed. Some of the places we visited felt a little rushed. She was very honest. We asked questions. She was not shy about admitting any downfalls that they might have or any concerns that we had that we thought might be an issue. She was honest about whether they might actually be an issue or not, and I really appreciated that. One of the things we liked most is that all of the rooms had a patio.

We really, really like Harbison Shores, and we had a really, really good visit. We were impressed with their security at the front door. It was an electronic sign-in when you came in the door. I was impressed with the manager that actually did the tour with us. There was a medication nurse there that was giving out the medication dosage. She stopped and talked to us, and was very nice and very friendly. The way the rooms were set up was much nicer than the other place we visited. They have amenities like a beauty salon. The place was very nice, very well kept, and very clean.

The lady who gave me the tour at Harbison Shores was very nice and very upbeat. It sounds like they're going through a transition to really kind of re-modernize the place because it's pretty old. I think it's going to continue to get better and better, but it's just not what I'm looking for right now. They showed me a model one-bedroom. It was a nice layout and it was clean. The spaces were older.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad has moved into Harbison Shores. It is like a home away from home. He is well adapted. He is in the memory care unit. The staff is wonderful, professional, and caring. They have daily arts and crafts, there is a lady who comes in and plays the piano, and they have sing-alongs and interactive activities. They have separate rooms for showering and bathing, and the patients' rooms just have toilets and sinks. With my dad's current condition, we were afraid that if he just got in the shower by himself, he might fall or injure himself, so I went with them because they have separate shower areas that they call "spas," and also because they have nursing assistance. Those were the only reasons for going that way.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother is at Harbison Shores. The first night wasn't good, I heard he paced all night in the room but the second day seemed a bit better. My family has been starting to visit him to provide some continuity and some constant in the middle of all the changes. I'm still working on something about contacting him but they don't think a landline in his room was a good idea. So now I just call the facility and they would go and get him. It's alright but it seems like he's having a conversation with someone standing right there listening. It's fine though, at least I'm able to reach him. The facility so far has been good. No issues there.

I visited this facility

We were able to visit Harbison Shores in person. I was comfortable with everything the staff told me. However, the facility and the grounds were not as nice as the others I've seen, and their rooms were smaller. They had spa rooms where residents would take showers. They didn't have a shower in the suite; it only had a toilet and a sink. The spa was like a communal-type shower area, and they were set up that way for safety, so they could watch everybody, and they could safely take showers if they needed assistance. They had an activity room and a movie-theater-type area. I do not believe it was as well maintained as the others I've seen. The private suites were a little small, and the bathrooms only had the sink and the toilet. The courtyard was enclosed and secure.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband is doing well so far at the Harbison Shores. He is in a studio with a little kitchenette, a bathroom, and a huge closet. It's one building with three little extensions that have been totally renovated. It looks brand new. My husband has issues smashing buttons on the TV and stuff, so right now, we have a camera in his room. We can also talk to him on that camera, and he can answer us. Then we have an Alexa in that room. We can tell Alexa to make a call, and it automatically comes up on his screen, and that cuts down all our anxiety. He can't turn the TV on, so through Alexa, we can turn the TV on, too, and find the channel that he wants. It's very beneficial. The people have been nothing but nice and kind. He's not very talkative, but they keep engaging him in conversations. They're still on lockdown because of the COVID virus, so I haven't tasted the food, but he says sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's OK. There's a lady named Ethel who runs that floor, and she's great. She's the go-to person, and everything I called about and asked them to do, they've taken care of immediately. Even if he doesn't feel good, they still check on him every hour, so you can't ask for better than that.

My mother is doing well at Carolina Gardens at Harbison. The staff is very helpful, very informative, they communicate with us well, and she adapted fantastically. It's a small community and there's a lot more one-on-one with the residents. It has a family-like atmosphere, they're very welcoming, and it's very homey. She has a shared room, but they have single rooms as well. They have an outdoor sitting area and a garden where they can go out and plant flowers, vegetables, or fruits. It's a secured facility. They have outings, and they do fun events. For example, there was a luau last night where they had food and games. There's a busy itinerary every day that's posted on the front door. They have daily devotionals, music, activities, games, movies, social events, ice cream socials, and they have activity boxes that help with mental stimulation and hand-eye coordination.

I'm planning to put my mother-in-law in Carolina Gardens at Harbison. My impression of the community is very nice. The rooms were suitable and they're actually very nice for the price. The staff greeted me during the tour and everybody was very friendly. I was shown some of their amenities like the hair salon, activities room, and the garden. Everything was good; I can't say anything bad about them.

I visited The Agape Senior which was a very nice place. They had a very small outside area. The rooms were very nice and very spacious. I was only there once, and the staff was all very nice and very helpful to answer question. The people were very nice, and it looked like they were being cared for. Overall, it was a very nice place. My daughter-in-law's grandmother had been there for many years, and the family had been very pleased with it.
