Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Georgetown, Texas

Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.

  • Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
  • Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
  • Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.

If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.

Free Resources for Seniors in Georgetown, Texas

Seniors and their families can lean on the following services to make aging an easier process. Some of these focus on making aging in place at home feasible for longer, delaying transitions to institutional care settings. Other resources help guide older adults through the process of obtaining higher levels of care.

ResourceContactService
Williamson County and Cities Health District(512) 248-3252
Through the WCCHD’s Healthcare Helpline, callers can find out more about services that may be available to Williamson County residents. In some cases, low-income individuals are eligible for assistance with health care expenses. Support services for those with daily living needs are offered as well. The WCCHD does not provide all services directly, but it can point callers in the right direction.
Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area(512) 916-6062
The AAACAP is a resource for seniors and their caregivers. It provides ombudsman services on behalf of residents of long-term care facilities. Other offerings include care coordination and information, referrals and benefits counseling. Through contracting, the AAACAP also facilitates transportation and nutrition services, among others.
Capital Area Aging and Disability Resource Center(855) 937-2372
Operated by the AAACAP, the ADRC is a contact point that helps clients seek aid with matters such as Medicare applications and housing. Assistance finding financial support may be available as well. To streamline clients’ experiences, the ADRC directs organizations toward clients rather than vice versa, cutting down on the number of times seniors need to explain their situations.
Meals on Wheels of Williamson and Burnet Counties(512) 763-1400
To help seniors access nutrition, Meals on Wheels’ volunteers deliver food to individuals unable to cook, shop or drive on their own. The volunteers perform wellness checks during their deliveries, which may reduce feelings of isolation among the homebound. These wellness checks also let the volunteers identify and raise concerns if something seems amiss.
Veterans Services(512) 943-1900
Older veterans who reside in Williamson County have access to the Veterans Services office, as do their dependents and survivors. Direct support is available, as is assistance with seeking benefits from Texas, Williamson County and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Those benefits may help cover expenses like health and burial bills.
