The city of Beaverton, which is located in the northwest region of Oregon, has nearly 100,000 residents, 12 percent of whom are over the age of 65. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 65,000 Oregon residents have Alzheimer's disease, which is a top cause of dementia. This number is expected to increase by nearly 30 percent in the years to come.
To support the growing number of residents living with dementia, the Beaverton area has 19 memory care facilities. Two are located in the city proper and the other 17 are in nearby cities, including Portland and Tualatin. Memory care facilities in Beaverton may be situated in assisted living facilities, residential care facilities or nursing facilities. Oregon has a separate set of rules and licensing requirements for these communities, and any facility that offers memory care must obtain an endorsement to do so.
