What to Consider About Memory Care in Dupage County

The state of Illinois is home to 220,000 seniors who are living with Alzheimer's disease. DuPage County has a population of more than 930,000, making it Illinois' second most populous county. Of these residents, 15 percent are aged 65 years and older, and may have some type of dementia.

To address this, the Illinois Department of Public Health has created an Alzheimer's Disease State Plan, which aims to make memory care services readily available. These services are offered at memory care facilities, also known as Alzheimer's special care units, and can be found in 29 locations across the county.

  • As seen across the state as a whole, winters in DuPage County can be quite harsh.  Temperatures can drop to just 15 degrees, and around 30 inches of snow is expected to fall each year.   • DuPage County is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care, such as Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and the nationally recognized Central DuPage Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
  • Based on the U.S. national average of 100, the cost of living in DuPage County is significantly higher. It is rated 125.4, which is also much higher than the Illinois statewide average of 102. The largest contributing factors in this difference are high housing and transportation costs, though seniors can expect to save on groceries and health services.
