I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

When I realized that it was time for my mother to move to an assisted living place, I researched and visited several in the Holladay area. While all of the facilities were adequate, the moment I took a tour of The Ridge at Cottonwood, I knew this was the place for her. My mom has great taste and it is a beautiful facility with all of the amenities she would want. It has a beautiful dining room with great food, a movie theater, a hair salon, regular daily activities, LDS church services on site and mom loved the weekly bus ride. I chose a spacious one bedroom apartment with a beautiful view of Mount Olympus which is what she was use to. I wanted the transition to be seamless and have her surroundings be comfortable and what she is use to so as to lessen any discomfort by moving. She eventually needed to be moved into their Memory Care unit. As beautiful as the physical surroundings are and as much as we appreciate the many comforts, we most appreciate the people. The staff at The Ridge Cottonwood are excellent. The members of the administrative and healthcare teams are friendly, knowledgeable, compassionate, and responsive to our concerns. They were very patient with me and my many questions The CNAs, med techs and other staff members are kind, well-trained, and attentive to the needs of all of the residents. Some of them were exceptional and really went the extra mile. As a family we were grateful to have the team at The Ridge assisting us as we navigated this challenging time. By the time my mom passed, me and my family had learned a lot about dementia. It was a tremendous relief to know that mom was living in an excellent facility where she could feel safe, comfortable, and know that help, if needed, is a button push away. Last thought, one of the best things we ever did was utilize Canyons Home Health when hospice became necessary. Their hospice team is AMAZING! We highly recommend The Ridge at Cottonwood. It’s more than just a facility - it’s a place where residents are treated with dignity, respect and genuine affection

My mom and brother were at The Ridge Cottonwood. Our experience was very positive. The staff there was awesome. Their room was a one-bedroom apartment, so they had twin beds, a living area with a little kitchenette, and a bathroom. It was very spacious and very comfortable. And they were on the ground floor, so it had a great view out the window. They had a garden. Around the outside is a nice park area, so it was nice and comfortable. The staff was great. Nothing bad to say about them. They had several activities. I had a hard time getting my mom out of her room to participate, but that wasn't for lack of availability. It was just Mom just didn't want to get up. They had music upstairs, and my brother likes music, so we went to listen to some music. They had a couple of things like that during the afternoon. They have activities, but if you don't anticipate, it's your own fault.

The Ridge Cottonwood is a beautiful place. The people there were really nice and really caring. The staff member who gave the tour was really enthusiastic. He knew a lot about the care, and he seemed generally really concerned about the people that were there. The apartments were beautiful and a great size. They're very homey. I ended up getting there while they were eating, and the dining area was very well staffed and very well maintained. It's very much set up like a restaurant would be.

I visited this facility

I toured the Ridge Cottonwood. The gentleman that helped me, Raven, was wonderful and very helpful. He answered all my questions and gave me some advice on my situation with my mom, which was really nice. The other people that work there seemed very, very nice, and professional. The facility itself was beautiful. It was very, very impressive. I didn't have a meal there, although I was impressed with their menu. The dining area was extremely nice. It felt like you were in a restaurant and their menu was very extensive. They had a selection for the day, and then they also had a whole bunch of other options if you didn't want that. Their menu looked pretty amazing. They had a movie theater and a gym, and he asked if I wanted to see them, but I said no. There was a common area where people could socialize, and that was really nice. There was an outdoor patio area that looked really nice for the summers.

I visited this facility

I went and visited The Ridge Cottonwood. It's a little bit pricey, but I can see why because it was so lovely. The facility was gorgeous. The rooms were spacious; they were able to accommodate my in-laws. You could go and get food at any time. You had a microwave in your room, and you could cook for yourself if you wanted to. They would bring your medication to you when you're supposed to have it on time. They had staff 24/7, so it was just a really, really lovely place. I remember telling the lady, "When I get old enough, I want to live here." It was also immaculate. It was like being on a cruise ship, and I had been on a cruise ship, and it was just beautiful. Also, the staff are really great people. They're very caring, very knowledgeable, and very helpful. It was just a really, really great place. I really, really liked it.

Provider Response

Thank you, Diane for your lovely words and 5 star review. We do think of ourselves as a cruise ship on land that has fabulous care. We focus daily on delivering services that can help our residents thrive and maintain their active, fulfilling lives. The camaraderie, spirit and loving relationships in our community truly do make this a special place to live and work. The health and wellbeing of our residents is our priority. Thanks for your wonderful comments about our community.

My mom will be moving into The Ridge Cottonwood. It had a view of the mountains, which she loved. I like the common outdoor area. It was larger and more inviting. They have a little garden area for them to work in. The view of the mountain was great. It was easy to maneuver. The staff was very informative and personal. They have a lot of activities.

Provider Response

Thank you, Donna, for your kind words about our community. We're so happy that your mom will be calling it home and we know she's going to fit right in. Cristi, our Community Life Director, will have her involved in all kinds of activities where she'll make new friends. We look forward to having her as a part of our family!

The facility is beautiful and clean. The food is very good and the staff extremely attentive. They have been very good to work with particularly with the Covid challenge. We feel very grateful for the help with both our parents at this facility!

Provider Response

The well-being of our residents is our top priority, and it means the world to hear about the positive impact we've had on your parents. I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was a resident at The Ridge. It is beautiful and the activities were good there. As people age, keeping their dignity is important. That means to be treated with respect and not being talked down to. Assisted Livings often find it difficult to hire all the right people. It is important to have good bedside manner. I truly am grateful for the handful of employees that took such good care of my mom and treated her like a friend or family. It is the people that make all the difference. Aside from a few issues with adjustments to covid and some management turnover, I think there are a lot of employees there that really care. They did a good job protecting residents during covid.

Provider Response

Miga, it was an honor to serve your mother and your feedback hits right at the heart of our service philosophy. Our community is committed to providing personalized care and support with dignity, respect and compassion. We're fortunate to have team members and leadership who live up to this standard regardless of any managerial shifts or challenging periods like the pandemic. Your kind words of gratitude for your mother's positive experience are very much appreciated. We extend our best wishes to you and the rest of the family.

I have visited and observed residents at The Ridge-Cottonwood for the past four years, and all seemed content until about a year ago. I am now compelled to write due to the exodus of several residents and valued staff members. My family is one of many who have given our notice to leave. The toxic environment created by the current director and head nurse is incomprehensible. His abusive manner towards staff, residents and their family members should not be tolerated. The nurse doesn't return phone calls and is known to hang up on residents and family members. They should be removed immediately if this cancer is to be eliminated. The Ridge-Cottonwood has gone downhill. It's sad that elderly people have to be uprooted because of poor management. Stay away from The Ridge-Cottonwood.

Provider Response

Our community takes pride in serving our residents and their families, who we believe deserve nothing but the best. This commitment has not wavered since we first opened our doors and the situations you describe are contrary to our values and day-to-day practices. While we firmly disagree with your assertions, we welcome the opportunity to shed light on our leadership and service philosophy, which always puts residents and team members first. Please feel free to contact Jayne Keller, our Vice President of Senior Living, at any time to discuss this in greater detail.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I wanted to thank The Ridge Cottonwood for taking exceptional care of our Mom during the last eleven months of her life. She received great care from the CNAs and Med Techs that assisted her with her daily needs and loved her as if she was their own Mom. A special thank you to Fernanda, for all the love she showed our Mom, styling and coloring her hair, helping us to celebrate her 87th birthday and making sure she was always being taken care of. During the last four and half months of our Mom's life, COVID-19 became the normal way of life. Thus, The Ridge has really stepped up while implementing the CDC guidelines and continued to take amazing care of our Mom. It has been a difficult time for the families as well as The Ridge too. However, the employees of The Ridge have had the difficult task of taking great care of the Residents and to make sure they were having their needs met. If we had not had the help of the CNAs, Med Techs, Activities and Marketing Departments we would have been unable to give our Mom the care she needed. We truly appreciate all of their creativity to help us be able to see our loved ones during these difficult times. The Mother's Day parade, and all the countless drive-in and breezeway visits made this time much easier to endure. Thank you so much to all of the employees of The Ridge Cottonwood for their endless love and devotion to our Mom and all of the many Residents who live at The Ridge Cottonwood.

Provider Response

It was an honor to serve your mother and family during such a pivotal time, Sandra. We believe it is our duty to provide the best possible care with love and compassion, especially when faced with a health crisis like COVID-19. Having such a positive impact is one of the most rewarding aspects of working at The Ridge Cottonwood. Fernanda, as well as our CNAs, med techs, life enrichment and marketing teams, will be touched by your compliments. We miss your mother dearly and extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your loved ones. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We really appreciate it.

Stay away from this place. It is a beautiful building, and when our mother first moved into assisted living at The Ridge Cottonwood (previously named Cottonwood Place) things could not have been better for her. Not quite 2 years ago, the owner contracted with Cappella Living Solutions to take over management of the facility and things immediately began going down hill. It was a constant fight to see that our mother's care plan was being followed. With the COVID19 outbreak things rapidly went from bad to worse. Since March the facility has been locked down. Visits are limited to 10 minutes twice a week, when they can be scheduled, and take place outside with residents behind a plexiglass barrier. The head nurse has placed her personal agenda with regards to COVID ahead of the physical and mental well being of the residents. Residents have not been allowed to leave the facility for routine appointments, such as dentist or podiatrist visits, or to get a haircut (the facility's salon has been shut down since March). Our mother's personal physician was not allowed into the facility to see her, despite being equipped with mask, gown, gloves, etc. We recently moved our mother to a different facility and she is much happier. Wish we had made the move months ago!

Provider Response

Steve, we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. Your mother's health and well-being was a top priority during her time with us, as it is for each and every one of our residents. While we are disheartened by your dissatisfaction, we stand by our commitment to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our community is adhering to guidance from local, state and federal authorities every step of the way. While the precautions we have taken have been strict, protecting the lives of our most vulnerable population is more than worth it. Your mother was a beloved member of our community and we welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns in greater detail. Please feel free to reach out to us directly. We extend our best wishes to you and the rest of the family.

The Ridge-Cottonwood is not the same facility it was when we moved our mom into assisted living in 2017. In a little over three years, there have been 7 different executive directors (4 hired and 3 interim). We recently moved our mom out for cause after the current executive director threatened her care in a hostile manner. After conferring and filing a complaint with the State Ombudsman, complaints were also filed with Adult Protective Services, the State Dept. of Health and the Division of Professional Licensing. The leadership at The Ridge-Cottonwood cannot be trusted. The only reason I’m giving one star is because there are a handful of front-line employees who try to do a good job. Don’t be fooled by the beautiful facility ~ behind the front door is a very broken machine. I cannot recommend The Ridge-Cottonwood.

Provider Response

Sue, we truly loved having your mother as one of our residents, and ultimately, the satisfaction of every family we serve is our focus and priority. All our team members, regardless of rank, are held to a high standard of respectability and service. We take your concerns very seriously and have fully cooperated with health authorities, and will do so moving forward. In fact, no deficiencies were found in our most recent health inspection by the state. Our community will continue to provide the high quality care and services that everyone expects and deserves. We wish you and your mother nothing but the best.

Our Mother just passed away recently from The Ridge at Cottonwood. Covid 19 changed things drastically for our family. We were no longer able to go and take care of our Mom the way we wanted to. The CNA's, Marketing and Activity staff became our lifeline to our Mom and they went above and beyond trying to make sure that our Mom was taken care of the way we would have as a family. We knew that they cared and loved our Mom. They became like family and we will be forever grateful to them for that.

Provider Response

Please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of your mother. It was a privilege to serve her and your family during her time with us, and she is dearly missed. The CNA's, Marketing, and Activity teams will be honored to hear about the positive impact they're having, especially during this uncertain COVID-19 period. Making such a difference in the lives of the residents and families we serve is what drives our community, and your heartfelt appreciation means the world. Thank you so much for the positive feedback.

This facility is beautiful to the eye, but that is as far as it goes. The management can not be depended on to be honest with family members and it is difficult to even get a call back. In the 2 years my parents have been there, the director and head nurse have changed 3 times. The CNA's work hard, but are always short staffed and can't be depended on to come when needed. The care given doesn't even come close to the high prices. The head nurse continues to violate the personal desires and rights of my parents by imposing her personal health rules on them. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy.

Provider Response

The well-being of the seniors we serve always comes first for our entire team, from management to our health care staff. We're committed to providing care that not only meets our residents' preferences, but is also best suited for their clinical needs. This remains true at all times, including during leadership shifts. Ensuring we are adequately staffed around-the-clock and that our team members have ample support are also key components. We believe in full transparency and welcome the opportunity to discuss our practices and procedures in greater detail. Please contact our Executive Director, Matt Stokes, at your earliest convenience. We're looking forward to addressing your concerns.

NEVER trust The Ridge with your loved ones. Met the sales and nursing team several times. Toured the facility several times (each time staff violated HIPPA to talk about personal issues of residents). SIGNED a legal contract, given unit KEYS, paid the deposit. Staff called me TWO days before we moved my parents from out of town to tell me they were refusing to take my parents. I was told the executive director refused them because The Ridge couldn't adequately care for my father, despite the approval and assessment of the RN they had hired to assess my father in his city. When I asked to speak with the executive director in person, they confirmed he was in his office but refused to speak with me. With TWO days noticed, I moved them to another facility and they have been independently living, dining, attending activities, and enjoying life for the past 17 months (and many more to come). Shameful, dishonest, money-driven actions by The Ridge. I'm not sure what the real reason for their last-minute contract violation, but they take advantage of the fact that families don't have time to deal with legal matters, regardless of the binding contract already signed. I didn't insist they honor the contract because my parents deserve better than a sketchy facility who doesn't care about the elderly or listen to their family members.

Provider Response

When we evaluate prospective residents, our health professionals do their very best to ensure we, in our role as caregiver, can adequately and safely meet their needs and requirements. We understand and appreciate this can be a frustrating process for families, and we do our utmost to communicate these assessments in a timely, transparent manner. We're discouraged this wasn't your experience and are sorry for any additional stress this may have caused your family. Your feedback has allowed us to review our admission process in an effort to be more accommodating to families interested in our community. We're relieved your parents are doing well and wish you all the very best.

Pretty fancy place, although I think it's a stretch to call their Memory Care facility a real MC facility. My father was there for just under three months, and they kicked him out of inappropriate behaviour? The aides couldn't get him to take his (much needed) meds. His room stunk of urine every other time I visited. Just because you place an electronic lock on the door doesn't make you a facility capable of handling special needs

Provider Response

We appreciate your concerns and for bringing them to our attention. On behalf of our community, I would like to address your issues with us.

We do on occasion ask residents to move to a community that can better address the needs of an individual when memory care alone is not enough. Some residents with severe memory issues can exhibit inappropriate behavior, such as repeated public urination and refusal of care. When this occurs, communities with a high level of behavioral and skilled nursing hospital care can be a better solution for the individual. We care deeply for our residents and want them to living in a community that best serves their needs. In terms of taking medicines, we cannot force a resident to take medications if they refuse, due to Resident Rights, which we abide by. We are sorry that you had an unsatisfactory experience with us. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience in detail. Please contact me at your convenience at

Sincerely, Rob Johnston executive director for Cottonwood Place

Cottonwood Place was small and affordable. The rooms were studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom. Some of them had a very beautiful view of the mountains. It was new. I noticed the patients were out, and they were having a German lesson. They looked like they were enjoying it and having fun with it. I saw a lot of memory facility people all together having conversation, and some were exercising or doing stretching. They were having a great time. I saw all the people were gathered for their lunch. They were having a great time. They all seemed to be well taken care of.

This facility is not equipped for memory care. My grandfather was there for two months. One day when I dropped in for a visit I found him covered in urine and feces in his bed. I asked the nurse when the last time he was checked on and it had been hours. they were very rude and under staffed. We moved my grandpa after that and I would never trust someone I love to be taken care of in this facility.

Provider Response

As the Executive Director of Cottonwood Place, this is the first I have been made aware of your experience. When residents and family members have an issue, they typically approach me with the problem so it can be addressed immediately. We are a fully equipped, state licensed memory care community, designed and staffed in accordance for the care of resident’s with dementia and Alzheimer’s. It is possible at times that family members may visit their loved one right after an incontinence accident occurs, but due to our community’s strict policy of hourly status checks on each resident, it is highly unlikely that hours would have passed. Our entire care staff are devoted to each and every resident, as evidenced by our full community and low turnover rate. If you wish to further discuss the matter, please contact me.

I spend a lot of time at Cottonwood Place. I go three times a week and two of the times that I go I put in some volunteer work. I have gotten to know the place really well and I am very impressed with it. They always seem to be on top of everything with the residents. If there’s a problem they call you immediately even if it’s a small problem. The workers there are very attentive and very good. I helped with some of their activities. They play bean bag toss, indoor horseshoes, bingo, and they do arts and crafts. They have a large screen TV and a movie room. They have much to do. They take them upstairs to the beauty salon and they also take them on trips. They drove around downtown and in the mountains. The food is good and clean. I help serve the food. It’s very good energy in there. They work very well with the individuals and with their family. I couldn’t’ be happier having place my dad there. The rooms are very nice and spacious and that was one thing I really like about it.

Cottonwood Place Senior Living is a beautiful and new, higher-end, better-quality facility. There’s more social gathering places to mingle and walk around in and feels more upscale and modern. It is a very nice place, but it is far away and much more expensive than other places. Those are the only reasons we did not choose this facility for my father.

My wife is at Cottonwood Place. They have a whole bunch of activities during the day. They have Bingo, they play balloon games, and they have storytelling, movies, and trips on a bus. They go to different places like they have been up to Brighton, they go up the Emigration Canyon, and they have been to Liberation Park. I think it is excellent. Of all the places that I have seen, this Cottonwood Place seems to be one of the best.

Cottonwoods Place was a brand new place and a top-notch facility. However, I eliminated it because they started off with a basic $4,300 which was right in the ball park, but then there was $1,300 for laundry and $1,300 for this and $1,300 for that; it was way beyond my abilities. They had a very good group and kept them very busy. I could say this facility was like a 5-star hotel. It was really nice, but as I had said, I eliminated it very quickly because of the cost. However, the rooms were very spacious and beautiful. Everything was extremely clean and brand new. There was lots of room. The dining area was wide open. If the patients were able, they could go and select the food from a special bar that they had there. If needed, they would just bring the meals directly in the memory care. It looked like pretty good.

I visited this facility

The people at Cottonwood Place are very friendly and open to answer questions so the place can be familiar and you can be comfortable. The place is very clean, and the people looked very professional. There is a common area that you can consider as your living room. The people are together, but they have a resting area where they can be by themselves also. The dining setup is very good. It is clean, and it also has good day light. With this kind of place, they need to interact with everybody all the time, but my patient is very particular and is scared to be with other people. Maybe the facility needs to have caregiver or social workers to work individually with this kind of person.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mom was at Cottonwood Place Senior Living. The place is brand new. It was clean, and it seemed to have good food, but they don’t do as many activities as she was used to doing. The rooms were spacious, and the bathroom was big with a walk-in shower.

Cottonwood Place was nice, but it was kind of expensive. The people were really nice there. The rooms were big and nice.

Other

Overall, a phenomenal place. Modern, inviting, classy decor, spacious, and cozy. Besides the fact that Cottonwood Place is so new, the caring, attentive, and knowledgeable staff makes it a perfect community to get involved in. Family interaction and feedback is always encouraged, which makes me feel confident in the sense that I can trust their team to care for loved ones. This place has grown so much since I got involved, and I can tell that it's going to continue thriving on a daily basis. -Chrisa

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I had my mother stay at Cottonwood Place for five days because I went to Seattle just a few weeks ago. My mother had to pay $200 a day, and she was in the memory care. I don't know if they did her hygiene or not. I told them I wanted them to give her a shower, but when she came home, she was wearing the same clothes and the same underwear after five days. It's a beautiful facility and I was going to go back and talk to them, but I haven't. She had a suitcase full of clean clothes and underwear, but nothing was changed after five days. She is not happy to not have her hygiene done, but she seemed happy there.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father is in Cottonwood Place, and we chose it because it is the nicest one of all and it is brand new. The staff is very good. They are all friendly and knowledgeable. The rooms are brand new, spacious, and well designed. I don't think you could ask for a better room. The food is excellent. The dining room is open and spacious. They have fresh flowers every day. They have a wide variety of people who are friendly and open. They have a monthly calendar of activities that they do, and they have a big variety on it. They have a game room, a multi-purpose room, a fitness room, and a saloon.
