I visited this facility

I had an in-person tour of the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home. I liked the cleanliness and the fact that they had a full activity calendar so that even though he's suffering from dementia, he has an opportunity to do things. They also said that there are veterans who come out and volunteer and take the vet out on day trips, maybe to the mall or out to eat. They take them to a park or something like that. The activities and the cleanliness stood out to me. The staff members are all very nice as well and willing to help. They had multiple dining rooms, which I thought was good. They also had multiple places of worship for them.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Starting out this was the best place to be but over several years when key people left or were fired that changed my perception. My father was there for years but recently passed on. We feel his care went downhill as well. For one his hip was broken during their pandemic lock-down that was terrible. Several times when being visited he was found needing to be changed. When he was on oxygen full time he would be found with his air off his face and not a good state of mind. When his hip and pelvis was broken the va hospital right next door said he was ok and sent him back. When he was sent to Scott and White Hosp. which is close for a different reason they were the ones that found his broken bones. Billing was a nightmare we were always receiving bills for his care even though he was 100% covered by va. We were advised he should be put on hospice and told he would be totally covered but we had to pay omnicare which is part of cvs over 1200 dollars or my mother could not get into my dads va account. Which va locked up anyway and we had to hire a lawyer to help us which cost 1500 dollars. After his injuries and not able to get the visits he was used to my father did not last long.

I am a friend or relative of resident

I have been trying for weeks to get my step-father in to this place and Sabrina in admissions has been completely unresponsive and unprofessional. Unreturned phone calls, lost paperwork, excuses. I am so fed up and he is not even admitted yet!

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My spouse was at William R Courtney Texas State Veterans approximately four months in memory care unit. He had a private room with no lock on it. There was only one bed in there and a closet to put his clothes, and I provided everything else. It was no place for a guest to sit down except on the bed, which I was not very fond of. It was adequately clean. I had issued with it not being secure. By that I mean, it did have a look on his door. The other thing that I was upset with was that they had windows that opened on to a courtyard and it was not secure with locks on it. My spouse could open it, put the screen out and go out. There was no surveillance in and about outside. There were locks on the gate, and it was adequately high, but again, I noticed they could be sitting out there for a long period of time in the hot weather without any supervision. I felt that it really should have more security in the memory care unit. The food was adequate. The staff needed more continuing education and training as far as individual residents and their issues. However, other than that, my reason for removing my husband there was because it was not secure for him, and he could easily go out of that facility. When you had anybody that had Alzheimer's and they wandered, it was most important to have security and cameras around. They did have their entrance secured and coded, however, the staff was familiar with that code. Where he was presently at, I had the code to go in and out of the residence at my convenience. It was a much better system.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My husband is in a nursing home right now. He is in William R Courtney Texas State Veterans Home. It is very, very nice. They are very affordable and they have a lot of activities. They have a lot of people come in and entertain them. They go out to lunch once a week. They go to museums. They are a very nice place. My husband is not a foodie. He would complain about any kind of food, but I have eaten there several times, and I have not found the food to be that offensive at all. For a nursing home, they are very caring people. They take really good care of the veterans.
