My father was at Briarcliffe Gardens Memory Care Assisted Living. They were very caring and very attentive to all his needs. Their communication was always open with me, letting me know what his needs were and what they would do for him. They were very open about what options they had for him. Overall, it's just a very good experience. Originally, he was put in a room with another person, but because my father has sleep apnea and the person that he was with was a little too active for him, they noted that, and they moved him immediately into his own room by himself. They were very accommodating and very caring about what his needs were. The room was very clean. They washed his clothes every day, and they put names on his clothing so that they wouldn't get lost. It was very good. There are double occupancies and single occupancies based on what the patient needs. Of course, if there's anybody that comes in with anything communicable or contagious, they put that person in the room by themselves. But they did make an exception for my father based on his needs. For amenities, they had a room where the residents could go in. They had games and arts and crafts, and then they had a beautiful sunroom almost where they could all come and sit down and watch TV together and communicate together. The staff are very good. The food was very well prepared. Every time I walked in and they were serving the aroma smelled amazing, and my father was eating very well.

I visited Briarcliffe Gardens Memory Care Assisted Living. It was a relatively new facility. The people there were friendly. I met with some of the staff members, and they all seemed friendly, too. The rooms were a good size. It was very clean, but it was exceptionally expensive. The price range turned me off. The rooms were very nice and moderate-sized. They were much larger than the other places we visited. There was access to outdoors if they wanted to go outdoors and walk around the grounds and things like that.

Briarcliffe Gardens Memory Care Assisted Living was a close second in the four places I went to. It does not have a campus, but their assisted living building is only four months old. The building itself is wonderful. It's comparably priced. They have first floors with the doors leading outside, the door to go in and out of their aspect is different. Dining is where you find somebody that you like to sit with, and you sit with that person. I think that would be better for my brother because he would sit with a couple of people that are professors down there, he's highly educated, even though his mind is now going short-term. It would be better for him to choose instead of him being assigned a place to sit. You can have a dog on a leash over there in the back, to relieve itself outside, which is perfect for my brother. I was disappointed in the library, but that might be because the facility is new. I don't remember seeing a lot of amenities, but their grounds are large with many buildings, so each level of care, memory care, nursing, are all in separate buildings. You can walk from one to the other. I didn't find the sales staff readily able to help. It's definitely well-maintained.

My mother's room is bright and cheerful. The staff keep it very clean. My interactions with the staff have been very good. They answer questions and keep me informed regarding her activity and condition. I receive regular calls from the nursing staff regarding medical evaluations. The staff interactions with my mother are upbeat and respectful. There are regular musical events that my mother really enjoys.
Disappointed and disgusted

My mother was in this facility for rehab. The second floor rehab unit always smelled like urine. The place must be understaffed. One evening we were sitting in the dining room where about 16 to 20 residents were sitting in wheelchairs, watching TV. ONE CNA was watching 16 to 20 residents. This CNA had to use the bathroom and instead of calling for coverage, she just left for about 5 minutes, leaving all of these people at risk. When she returned, she immediately sat down (didn't look around to see how everyone was doing) and started texting, paying absolutely no attention to anyone's needs. My husband and I both witnessed this. We were shocked when she left the room. Then, as this CNA was sitting texting on her phone, a nurse walked into the room and didn't say a word to the CNA about not doing her job, stop the texting. NOTHING. The day I went to pick up my mother to take her home, it was 9 a.m. My mother was still in bed, sleeping. When I finally got a CNA to get my mother dressed, the CNA said, "No wonder you're cold, you're soaking wet." So, 9 a.m. and my mother was still laying in bed in her own urine. I would like to offer to the owner of this facility to go lay in that bed, in his own urine. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? I was disgusted. Shame on them. There were two people covering a hall of rooms, so I'm going to guess at least 20 patients in that area. Shortstaffed!!

Placing a loved one who had suffered a stroke and was suffering from dementia into a nursing facility was a difficult endeavor. We feel extremely blessed to be able to do so in a facility that guided us through the process and addressed both physical as well as emotional needs. Briarcliffe deals with both their patients and the families with respect, compassion and professionalism. The facility is set in a very tranquil and relaxing environment. I will continue to recommend Briarcliffe Manor to friends and family.

My wife has advanced Alzheimer's, and Briarcliffe Gardens is dedicated specifically to Alzheimer's. They were not just an assisted living with all kinds of different things. Everyone there is trained specifically to handle their Alzheimer's residents. The owner took me around for an hour and a half, and explained why everything was done the way it was done in this facility: why the carpet pattern was the way it was, why the colors were the way they were, why the rooms were set up the way they were, and he convinced me. He was also competitive. And there are little things. There is natural light in the central building, there are skylights with natural light, and the kitchen is directly next to the dining area, so when they bring the residents over to the table for dinner, they could smell it cooking, and it is like being at home. There were lots of little things that really made a big difference to me in the way that he explained it. The staff has been phenomenal. The first couple of weeks my wife was there, one of the nurses sent me an email with a picture of my wife on the exercise like they have been able to get her on it. That's the kind of care from the RNs to the nursing aides to the housekeeping staff to the kitchen staff, and every single one of them, when they pass her in the hallway or wherever, they greet her or put a hand on her shoulder. I couldn't ask for better care for my wife. Briarcliffe is just so far and above any of the others.

My grandfather was a resident of Briarcliffe a little over a year ago for almost 6 months before he passed away. At first he went in because he was having some shorter term health issues and my grandmother was having a hard time managing to care for him on her own. One of his biggest issues was dementia. Before my grandfather went into Briarcliffe I had spent time visiting several other nursing homes in the area when my other grandmother was in them after a fall before she passed away. Briarcliffe was one of our top 2 experience-wise out of them all. For the most part the staff was really friendly and seemed good to my grandfather (although I realize there are exceptions everywhere). But it is so important to trust the staff when your family members have dementia. The one thing I used to dislike was that at times I felt there was a horrible hospital-like odor there. Sometimes it was worse than other times. I realize that this may be hard to avoid in nursing homes but there was one facility that my grandmother was in that never smelled and felt like we were visiting her in her own home and that was my point of comparison. But in any case the care that my grandfather received at Briarcliffe was great and I would recommend it to others.
