My sister was in John J Kane Regional Center. As far as first impression, it was great. They got a really nice lobby and a courtyard outside. It was nice as far as the look. The rooms were kept very clean. Every day, they just come in and clean up; they do a good job at cleanliness. As far as the staff, some were great, and some were not. My sister did not like the food. The meals probably for her were just not adequate, but it was a very secure place for her.

My grandmother became a full time live in resident at Kane Regional Center nursing home, just outside the city of Pittsburgh. I found the conditions she was living in to be appalling. The staff ignored her readily and did not take care of her as they should have, considering the amount of money being spent for her stay at Kane. No one seemed to be around when she needed something, so when my family and I were visiting her we made sure we did it instead. I did not see too many amenities for the residents at Kane Regional. Rather than be "nursed" back to health and being cared for as the registered nurses and nursing assistants were supposed to be doing they were ignoring the patients. It seemed like a place where you go to have your last days not somewhere to get nursed back to health and still hold some quality of life. A prison seems like a better place to live than there. As a nurse myself and a human being, I would never send a loved one there or anywhere like it again.

My Mother In Law has been a resident of this facility for about a year now. The facility is normally clean and free of most odors. The employees at this facility do not seem to enjoy the work they do. My Mother In Law complains about the food on a constant basis. The facility does allow people to bring pets to visit the residents with a proof of health certificate from a vet. It would really be helpful if they provided wifi service to the residents on the floors as we had to have wifi installed for my Mother In Law. Cell phone reception is very bad at this facility. Overall we are happy with the facility and it is better than most that we visited prior to placing my Mother In Law here. The cost of this facility is reasonable as well. It is located in an area near the city limit of Pittsburgh and Homestead. They also take the residents who are able on shopping trips to local stores on a bi weekly basis.

Overall, I was impressed with the level of care provided by Kane, considering they are a county nursing home. Everything the residents could possibly need was on-site, including medical facilities, gym, physical and occupational therapy, even a beauty salon. Residents were grouped on different floors by need (such as dementia, or behavioral, etc). Each unit had a variety of activities every day for the residents to stay active. Additionally, there were several recreational areas on the ground floor for the residents to use, including a library, computer lab, TV rooms, visiting areas, and an outdoor deck where residents can sit or smoke. I was also impressed that for how many residents they have (hundreds), each person could receive their meals customized to their likes and dislikes. However, what I did not like was how sterile and small the bedrooms were. Unless the individial required a private room, each person had a roommate. The bedrooms were identical to standard hospital rooms, with a curtain separating each bed, and a small closet for personal effects. This was a good setup for short-term care, but not ideal for the long-term care that Kane provides.
