My mother has been at South Mountain Memory Care for 2 years now. I can honestly say that she has had much better care here than the other 5 homes she was at in the past. The staff here really takes good care of the residents. The home is for memory care residents ONLY so the staff is trained in that specialty. It's a small facility so there seems to be more individualized care for the residents. When my mother arrived, she was on hospice care. Within 3 months she thrived so much that she was taken off hospice. (I know this may not be the case for everyone but it was for her.) The food tastes good. Everyone is friendly, the staff, the nurses, the cooks, the administrators, the activities people...everyone! The building is bright and beautiful, not dull and drab and depressing as so many other places are. They have many activities and have therapy animals visit which is always a hit with the residents. I feel that moving my mother to this place was the best thing for her well-being and for our peace of mind. I literally believe it has added additional time to her life. Thank you SMMC!
What you can do with Caring
About South Mountain Memory Care in Emmaus, Pennsylvania
Welcome to South Mountain Memory Care "Small House"
Our ultimate goal at South Mountain Memory Care is to enrich the quality of life of our residents. To do this we built SMMC in the small house model that has been found to be the most successful environment in providing that sense of home, connectedness and ultimately, happiness. Research indicates that residents in small house communities were significantly more socially engaged and displayed few non-aggressive behaviors, such as wandering, than residents in larger, traditional settings.
While the small scale is critical, there are other design elements we included:
- Separate bedroom suites with clear paths from the bedroom to bathroom designed to reduce the stress associated with toileting and bathing.
- Abundance of natural light that helps regulate circadian rhythms which can alleviate sleep disorders, sundowning and seasonal depression.
- Way finding and orientation with the use of colors, aromatherapy and artwork, including views to the outdoors that promotes the use of exterior spaces and walking.
- Safety and security, not only is it important for residents to be safe and secure they must perceive themselves to be safe and secure. This can be achieved with restricted window openings and secure garden fences. Secure outdoor spaces give people with dementia a secure place to go outside and helps reduce elopement attempts because residents no longer feel cooped up.
- Consistent staff assignments with the same staff assigned to the same house at the same time in order to foster a sense of familiarity, an ability to truly know each individual and cater to their needs.
- Smaller, intimate gathering places for those residents that feel overwhelmed by larger crowds.
- The design and layout of SMMC minimize overstimulation as many residents become overwhelmed by large groups and spaces and can be susceptible to confusion and distraction. This is where more intimate settings should be provided. We mitigate the size of our 24 room small house by linking two 12 room houses around a central Town Hall that can be used for arts and crafts, dining and group activities.
Alzheimers and dementia profoundly affect families and need to be addressed delicately. The individual living with cognitive impairment needs special care in all facets of life. Similarly, the physical and emotional effects on the caregiver and other loved ones are difficult. For these reasons South Mountain Memory Care Community will have a holistic approach to resident care, staff training, amenities, programming and incorporating the needs and thoughts of families.
Memory care celebrates the life that remains and cherishes the memories that were made.
As more is learned about dementia each day best practices evolve in memory care. South Mountain Memory Care will have a strong commitment to proven strategies and best practices in resident care.

South Mountain Memory Care was a small intimate community. The staff knew all of the residents by name. It was very well maintained. They had a beautiful room. It was top-notch and very nice. We saw the dining area and it was also very nice, but I did not see any food services or didn't eat anything.

We certainly liked that South Mountain Memory Care was a smaller community. It was very clean and the people who ran it, from the administrator to all the other people we met, seemed organized and professional. It was beautiful and well maintained, from the furniture to the walls to the way the people met the employees, and the way they were dressed. It's also a secure facility and they had everything that mom would need.

South Mountain Memory Care was wonderful. The staff was great. It was a beautiful place. Anyone would love to have their loved one there. The only thing is that we told them about an issue my boyfriend's dad had, and they said it would be no problem. Then after an assessment about my boyfriend's father, they said no that they could not. We were very disappointed with them. All they did was make a phone call to the social worker, and they didn't actually come in. They just called the social worker and got an assessment. The place was gorgeous. The dietician came out and talked to us. They told us about the meals. Some residents were doing jigsaw puzzles and watching TV. The dining area was great. This place was absolutely beautiful. They even had a garden outside. If you need memory care for your loved ones, this is the place to go. Other than them saying no to us, it was great. The staff gave a good tour, but then she turned us down, so I'm not really happy with her.

South Mountain Memory Care was very nice. It was very clean and modern. They only have 28 residents so it's a small community and you're able to get good care. They were very cordial and very pleasant. I was impressed with the facility.

South Mountain Memory Care was gorgeous and reasonably priced. Had my mom not gone the route she went, I would have picked this place for the facility and the fact that they're very welcoming and very informative. They have a nice little secured garden area for the residents. They also have some fish tanks and some bird cages to give the residents there some animal life to look at. It was very nice.

I went to South Mountain Memory Care. That place was gorgeous, friendly, and didn't even seem like you were in assisted living. It was very open, very nice, and nestled in a very quiet part of the city. It was beautiful, the location was beautiful, and the staff was very nice. It's a small place. It was set up with the staff member at the door and the counter area so they always see who comes through or walks down the hallway. I got a good impression.

My father is in South Mountain Memory Care. It's very small, so they get more individual care. They have an open door policy, so my mother can come at anytime. They don't just care for the person who's in there, they care for the extended family also. They have a support group that meets once a month. She gets to know the other residents' extended family, and they discuss the care and the emotional issues dealing with someone with Alzheimer's. She's gotten more confident in the care that they're giving. If she has any concerns, they address them right away. It's a very positive experience. My mother is very satisfied with his care. They do family dinners. They have mental and physical activities, movie days, outside entertainment that comes in, and they always have music playing in the facility. Everything is kept very clean. It's a very nice facility. She's at peace with what's going on and that my father is being cared for.
