WALTONWOOD at Cherry Hill IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE After helping care for both my father and my mother during their final days and then coming down myself with an auto-immune disease, it became necessary to sell the family home and transition into a more secure living environment, where I would have access to care yet remain largely independent. After touring several dated facilities with older style décor, worn furnishings and unfavorable conditions, my outlook for independent living became bleak and discouraging. And then it happened! As I turned off Lilley Road into the parking lot of Waltonwood at Cherry Hill, there appeared a most handsome and architecturally splendid building, situated on well-maintained and gorgeously landscaped grounds. This outward beauty served to make me want to take a look inside. The friendly and knowledgeable staff greeted me in the lobby, offering a guided tour of the facilities and grounds. The inside “ginger bread” décor, with vaulted ceilings, crown moldings, and generous amounts of wainscoting and chair railing was just breathtaking and all the furniture, carpet, and painting was perfectly coordinated, clean and well-maintained -- unlike anything toured in the surrounding area. The air was fresh with all new, modern furniture and perfectly coordinated within the buildings. All the apartments had sliding glass doors for adequate natural light and fresh air ventilation, each having a patio or balcony. During the tour, I breathed a little prayer to the Lord, expressing my desire to live here if possible. However, after moving in, the facilities, grounds and charms were just the beginning. The heart and soul of Waltonwood lies not in the physical space alone rather in the staff who plans, organizes and facilitates the multitudes of excursions, activities, services, sporting events, professional arena shows and on-site entertainment of every variety for residents to enjoy. The food preparation and quality here are unparalleled and planned by our on-site professional chief with particular attentions to quality of taste and nutrition. The activities director coordinates multiple activities available for most every hour of the day. Most importantly on a personal level, I feel safe, secure and well cared for living here. I recommend Waltonwood most enthusiastically to anyone needing a little help while aging.

The people at Waltonwood at Cherry Hill were very nice and the chef came out and talked to my mom because she is on a gluten-free diet. She went there twice. She went once with me, and then she went back again with my brother. She put $300 down there, but she had put in on a one-bedroom and now she decided the one-bedroom is too small. She's got to the end of the month or she can switch to another unit if one comes up, but there are seven on the waiting list for a two-bedroom. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The building is like 22 years old, but it had been renovated. It looked a little worn and it needed some maintenance, like the front door entrance and stuff like that. It looked like it was all scratched up, probably from walkers. We saw the library and the movie room with a slanted floor, so everybody could see. They had a courtyard. We saw lots of people out there having lemonade or punch or whatever they had out there, and it had a good turnout. It was good. I just think the room that we saw wasn't as good as the others. It didn't have laundry and dishwashers in the units. That was kind of lacking. The facility was very good and clean. You could tell they had redone some areas. They just need a little bit more on the front door, but it was very acceptable.

I went to Waltonwood at Cherry Hill to visit a friend. It's very nice. I noticed a lot of interaction between the staff and residents. They seemed very caring and very responsive to the residents' needs. The place was tastefully decorated and very clean. The grounds were beautiful. They offer entertainment and transportation. They hold family dinners every other month where a resident can have family come in and have dinner with them in a private setting.

My father has been at Waltonwood Memory Care for nearly a year and I feel very comfortable with the care he has received there. The staff is friendly and engaged with the residents. Even during the shutdown of the pandemic there were many different fun activities. The memory care team will go above and beyond for their residents.

Waltonwood Cherry Hill was nice. They offer a lot of things, but it was expensive. You get your apartment and everything, but you've got to pay for the assistance to help them out. If you want somebody to give your loved one their medication, you've got to pay for it, but the room was very nice and clean, and the people were very friendly. They had church services, movie nights, and card games. The grounds were well-landscaped. The lady who toured me around was nice. The design and layout of the place were also nice.

I am a relative of a current relative. They let an outside therapist in for almost 2 hours with COVID symptoms. She tested positive the next day and now COVID is circulating throughout the place. It's shameful that, at this time, they are not more careful about who they let in. Imagine the anxiety of my relative and all of the residents! We were having doubts before this happened. Most of the staff hangs out around the central desk chatting instead of checking in with patients. When my relative gets upset about something their first answer is always medication. I'm sure that's easier for the staff but how about just talking to the person and finding out what is wrong? We are not happy with what we've seen there. I guess that's why they make you sign a year-long lease. It's harder to get away when you find out how substandard the care is. I highly recommend that you avoid this place for the sake of your loved ones. There are many places to choose from in the Canton Michigan area. You and your loved one do not have to settle for this place. When you are shopping around make sure you ask a lot of questions about how they protect the residents from outsiders potentially bringing the COVID virus into the community.

My parents have lived there for several years. It was always a safe place for them however more and more of the dedicated staff have left. I don’t feel that sense of caring and looking out for my parents is there anymore.

My mother moved here here three years. If we were looking now, we would not choose them. The management is terrible and disrespects the residents. Continual staff turn over. No resolution comes to any of our concerns lodged with the corporation.

My grandparents have stayed here for years and as far as I'm concerned Waltonwood has the best service imaginable! The grounds are beautiful and well taken care of and the interior is just as beautiful. The staff is very kind and helpful and every time I've visited they've assisted me with all of my needs. Waltonwood offers several amenities such as a gym, movie theatre, salon, computer room, and library, all of which are excellent. Waltonwood also offers multiple activities and events (although most of which have been canceled due to Covid-19) such as bingo, lunch outings, and even a Wii bowling team! This is just a part of what Waltonwood has to offer. The rooms are very nice, they are the perfect size for residents, big enough to not feel cramped but small enough to be manageable. The food is excellent, I would even say restaurant quality. They have great variety and vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Waltonwood is an amazing place to live. I highly recommend Waltonwood to anyone that is considering it. You won't regret it!

My husband and I visited Waltonwood at Cherry Hill last year to get an idea of how it is. There are two of them in Canton and both are very good. The one at Cherry Hill was like a posh hotel. The rooms were all very good. They had everything and according to them they serve three meals a day. They had lots of activities also. We just had lunch, so we didn't eat anything, but they invited us to stay for lunch. The staff was very nice. As far as I observed, there's no problem with them. If I could afford the money, I would go to Waltonwood at Cherry Hill.

Why Waltonwood –Cherry Hill? If you’re thinking about considering the possibility of entertaining the notion of maybe checking out some retirement facilities, what criteria (besides “vibes”) will you apply to make a decision? Here’s a handy checklist, the one my wife and I utilized when we were scoping out candidate-places in Wyoming, Arizona, and Michigan: (1) the staff; (2) food; (3) safety; (4) commodious apartments; (5) amenities; (6) activities; (7) location; (8) does it hug you? Let’s examine these, in alphabetical order: (1) Activities. At Waltonwood, you have dozens of choices – from card playing and bingo, physical exercises with a trained leader, movies, TED talks, arm-chair videos, hikes in the woods, craft projects, and others. The best component is that no one knocks on your door and yells “everyone out for volleyball.” Every week Management hands out a list of goings-on, but there’s no pressure to do any of them. (2) Amenities. Waltonwood has a comfortable library; a genuine movie theatre (six films a week); a billiards room; a fitness center with nine machines; two lounges, an arts&crafts room; a wine&snack room; a furnished guest suite, two well-maintained, interior courtyards; and its own post office . (3) Commodious apartments. Waltonwood offers 10 different apartment models. All of them have a living room, a kitchen with up-to-date appliances, one or two bedrooms, one or two large shower-bathrooms, and a balcony for those on the upper floors (patio doors for those on the first floor). Just about all of us have had to downsize, and we want to feel like we have adequate space. In a few facilities we visited the living spaces felt claustrophobic, but at Waltonwood, your apartment is a comfortable home. There are full-time, helpful maintenance employees to make repairs plus a housekeeping crew to clean our apartments bi-weekly. Both are part of the package. (4) Food. Your rent includes breakfast and dinner, and you have ample and nutritious choices every day (lunches are available for extra. Other facilities we visited provided three meals a day, but residents whom we interviewed complained that they felt chained to the building all day long). I am one of the world’s pickiest eaters (ask my wife); During the tours of the dozen or so retirement facilities we visited, I invariably asked the Head Chef if he or she could accommodate my culinary peculiarities. Most said, “Ssorry, not possible.” The Head Chef at Waltonwood answered “no problem!” She has kept her word. (5) Huggability. Some real estate agents ask their buyer clients if a house they are checking out “hugs”them. That’s the vibes criterion. Buyers who answer in the negative never buy the house. Analagously, some retirement facilitiies you might tour will turn you off or feel creepy according to whatever standard by which you judge a place you have never been before. Waltonwood-Cherry Hill will hug you. (6) Location. Almost all retirement facility-hunters want a place that is close to their adult children and grandchildren. So, you’re looking in southeast Michigan because you have family nearby. That’s a given. When we moved from Wyoming, we were sure we wanted to live in Ann Arbor. Half-way between Ann Arbor and Detroit, however, Canton is serendipitously handy. Our dentist and dermatologist are in walking distance from Waltonwood, and a physician or nurse-practitioner will make house calls. The beautiful Canton Township Library is a seven-minute ride, and the recreation center is a literal stone’s throw from the library. Major grocery stores and big box stores are nearby, as are parks and bike trails. If you don’t have wheels, Waltonwood provides jitney bus service to any place you want to go within 10 miles. (7) Safety. (a) No one from the outside gets into Waltonwood without signing in at the concierge desk and having his or her temperature taken (during Covid, anyway); (b) each Waltonwood resident is issued a panic button to wear as a bracelet or necklace; c) There are no bathtubs (no one can fall); d) Neither smoking nor guns are allowed anywhere on the campus; e) Management assigns each resident a key to lock his or her own apartment, and all employees are trained to respect residents’ privacy;. f) Each apartment has a “red button”for the residents to push each morning, just to let Management know that we’re okay. (8) Staff. “Staff” is last in alphabetical order, but note that it holds the first position in the paragraph near the beginning of this essay setting forth the eight criteria. All of the other seven criteria lack vitality and stamina without the right staff. The Waltonwood staff (they like to be called “associates”) are caring, competent, energetic, good-humored, and exceptional. Before I retired, I was an employment law attorney, and I came to know how difficult it is for any business organization to maintain an inner harmony among its workforce. I am continually, pleasantly surprised at how well the gears mesh here. The staff have been selected precisely because they have the right personalities to be able to respond affirmatively and cheerfully to the needs and requests of over 100 unique, senior citizens. The associates and managers are well trained, and they consistently bend over backwards to make life as comfortable as possible for residents, seven days a week. (9) Price.. Of course there is also an unlisted, ninth criterion: Price. Everyone has to balance the advantages of each possible candidate-place with one’s ability to afford it. With Retirement facilities, one should remember, you really do get what you pay for.

Pre-Covid we were ok with the care our mother received. Once COVID hit we were not ok with the care. Way understaffed, laundry not being done, rooms not being cleaned. Less than transparent regarding COVID numbers and very secretive. Our mother caught COVID, no surprise but actually survived. When it was FINALLY allowed we got her the heck out of there. It was a huge three month nightmare. I am not rating food etc because pre Covid it was fine along with the help etc. but after Covid there appeared to be different workers. Also all entertainment and activities stopped cold turkey leaving many seniors all alone unable to see family and nothing to do. I tried to contact Singh Development but of course I had no luck. I realize the government was no help and the fact that they cannot be sued is criminal.

Do NOT let your senior family or friends live at ANY of the Waltonwood facilities. The allow residents to lay for hours in soiled diapers and there are ants and bugs crawling all over the residents' rooms and on the residents themselves. We have photo proof of these horrible practices. If you love the senior in your life....you will not place them at waltonwood facilities.

Very nice facility in memory care. food was good and nicely presented and served, more like a restaurant. Rooms were much nicer than most places we looked at. Staff was generally very good although it took a little time to get my mom’s situation understood. Overall we were very pleased with facility and staff and service and felt my mother was very well cared for. She had full service which was expensive (around $10,000 a month) but in this case it was worth it.

Waltonwood at Cherry Hill is very clean. Even though it's independent living, they have an agency for assistance in-house, which works very nicely for us since one parent doesn't need help while the other one does. The staff is very friendly and they obviously want it to be a success, so they're always available. The customer service is good, the grounds and gardens are lovely. The place is very well-kept and centrally located. It looks like they have a lot of activities for the residents. The pricing is certainly more affordable than some of the ones we've visited.

Waltonwood had really nice grounds and was well decorated. Everything was modern and up to date. They had a very nice dining room, a lot of activities, and bus rides to different places, which was very appealing to us. They gave us a small pie to take home, and my husband said it was very good. They had a special breakfast once a week. Everyone seemed to be very happy with what they're doing and eating.

Waltonwood at Cherry Hill has a building for memory loss patients. The woman who assisted us was very nice. $4,500 a month only includes the room and a meal; you have to pay for everything else. I was impressed with their activities and outings.

Waltonwood was very nice. All of the apartments had a balcony or a terrace, and we did eat there. The food was very good; staff was very accommodating. The whole place was nice and open, and the amenities were quite nice. They seemed to have a lot of activities including some trips to parks. They had a well-stacked library; it had a theater with movie-style seating, and it showed films every night. They had a bistro which was nice for snacks, and it had regular entertainment.

Waltonwood was very beautiful; I could have seen my mother fitting into that community quite well. It was very clean and it was a beautiful facility, it really reminded you of a home as it has a very homey feel. It was very modern and I love the apartments. It has a lot of activities, the staff was all very pleasant and we were given cherry pie and it was very good. The dining area was very well lit and it has an open seating. They weren’t confined with one partner every day, they can make friends and they can move around and I like that aspect.

The name of the facility is Waltonwood at Cherry Hill. We chose it because it is a nice community, and it had a homey feel. It didn't feel like you were put in a situation where you were put in a basement with a 'People who couldn’t help themselves' sign. They have activities all day long, and the staff is friendly. My husband has only been here since December, and so far, this is the best month. The rooms are nice. They got furniture in it. It has a closet, private bath, bed, and dressers. I would do like to see more nursing staff here in case someone gets sick. They do have a doctor here on staff, but he comes in once a week.

Waltonwood at Cherry Hill is excellent. The staff was nice. They seem like they really have things together. I don't know a whole lot about the staff there, but they seem very helpful. The rooms are nice and spacious, but they are a little more expensive. The dining room is nice. I would absolutely recommend this place to others.

Waltonwood was so expensive. The staff was very pleasant. That is the one place where the woman tried her hardest to make sure that I went there. She was really selling the place. The room was nice, but I didn't think it was safe for my father because he needed greater supervision. The dining area was very nice. They had a lot of activities. The place was very well maintained; however, it wasn't diverse enough for me. For a father with dementia, you want a little more familiarity as he would be the only black person there.

Currently we are using Waltonwood for my dad. It is clean, and the atmosphere is good. The staff treats my dad very good. They have a good staff, and they seem to be trained well. He has his own apartment that is a studio style. It has a small kitchen area, and it has no appliances other than a refrigerator. The space is fine. They have a physical coordinator that exercises with the residents every week. They have an activities person that plays games with them like bingo and cards. Every week they go out to lunch. They have activities where they may go to a park or dancing. Their activities person is very good. The food is OK. They have a restaurant style dining room. The best feature is their atmosphere. It is decorated nicely and upscale.

I had a brief tour at Waltonwood at Cherry Hill. It was a very nice facility. The accommodation, or the apartment that we looked at, was perfect. It would have fit my mom, and it would have been my second or third choice, but it just didn't meet all our criteria.

Waltonwood was beautiful. I would like to move there, but I have to be 60, so I couldn't live there yet. It was an apartment complex, and they had 10 different floor plans. Anywhere, the smallest apartment was 550 square feet; that's for one bedroom and one bath all the way up to 2,200 square feet, which has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, and it was bigger than my house. It has a gorgeous kitchen. The place was huge. It had a movie theater in it. We had dinner there. It was all china and linen, and you have a waitress or waiter wait on you. It was gorgeous. They also had a two-bedroom apartment that was reserved for guests that you could use if you want to visit your parents.

The place is so pretty, it is so nice there. They don’t have just a piano, they have a grand piano. Big, beautiful apartments. I am sure because Michael is retarded they didn’t want us there. It was so obvious. One day it was fine, the next they said you can’t live here, and refunded our money. I wouldn’t go there and live there now even if they paid me. I don’t want to live with people like that.

Very nice lobby/dining area with tablecloths. Open feeling. Toured the apt. rooms available and very nice. Staff friendly. Entrance way was a bit dark with dark green/wine red color scheme but felt very private which I liked.

This is a well-run, beautiful facility. Staff members are attentive, caring and friendly. Health care providers come on-site, so there are no transportation costs for routine care visits. Structured activities in Memory Care are excellent. Communication is prompt. Pricing structure 'reasonable' compared to another facility we had experience with that charged considerably more and provided considerably less care and service in a far more oppressive environment.
