The cost of memory care varies across Utah. One of the most affordable cities for care is Logan, where seniors pay around $4,125 per month. In Ogden and Provo, care is slightly more expensive than the Utah average, at $4,579 and $4,619 per month. 

Note: Residential memory care is usually offered in assisted living facilities, and in general, memory care rates tend to be 20-30% higher than assisted living rates. There is a range of other care options available to seniors living in Salt Lake City. The most affordable option is assisted living care, which typically costs around $3,310 per month. For seniors who want to age in place, there is home care available for around $5,625 per month, as well as home health care for $5,661 per month. For the highest level of care, there are nursing homes available for around $7,437 per month for a semiprivate room. 

The Utah Department of Health, Facility Licensing and Certification and Resident Assessment Bureau regulates memory care communities in Utah. It’s responsible for ensuring facilities renew their licenses, and it carries out inspections at least every 18 months. 

• The cost of living in Salt Lake City is above the state and U.S. average. On a 100-point scale where 100 is the national average, the overall cost of living in Salt Lake City is 118.9. Although the overall cost is higher, the average price of health care is around the same price as the national average at 101.4, and the average cost of transportation is lower at 93.4.
• The summers are hot, dry and clear, and winters are cold and snowy. The temperatures typically range between 23 degrees and 93 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, rarely reaching below 10 degrees or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Seniors will probably find June to September the most pleasant months for enjoying outdoor activities. 
• There are 29 hospitals in Salt Lake City. The number one hospital is the University of Utah Hospital, nationally ranked for cancer treatment and a variety of other disciplines. Intermountain Medical Center is also high-performing in many procedures and disciplines. 
• Utah is moderately tax-friendly toward retirees. Utah taxes Social Security retirement benefits and other forms of retirement income are subject to the state’s 4.95% flat income rate. However, seniors can claim a small credit against those taxes.
• Salt Lake City’s crime rates are high. The violent crime rates are 9.36 per 1,000 residents, compared to a national average of 4. Property crime rates are particularly high at 74.7 per 1,000 residents compared to the national average of 19. Despite the high rates, seniors can feel safe retiring in Salt Lake City. Memory care and other long-term care communities take measures such as video surveillance and round-the-clock staffing to ensure residents feel secure. 
• Salt Lake City has a public transportation network. It has commuter trains, buses and high-speed rail to provide access all around the city, including to the airport and the ski resorts. Seniors aged 65 and over can enjoy a 50% discount on regular fares. For memory-impaired seniors, getting transportation specialized for seniors may be the most comfortable option.
