Newburyport is a small, seaside community located on the outskirts of the greater Boston, Massachusetts, metro area. Estimates by the state of Massachusetts indicate that over 130,000 of its residents have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Newburyport, population 18,000, has 3,500 seniors aged 65 and older. To provide around-the-clock care for Newburyport seniors with dementia and Alzheimer's, the city has a dozen memory care facilities and there are more in the greater Boston area.Â
Memory care facilities in Newburyport, as in all of Massachusetts, may either stand alone as a dedicated memory care home or be separate wings of an assisted living campus. Stand-alone memory care facilities are referred to as dementia special care units (DSCUs). Other memory care facilities attached to assisted living communities are called special care residences (SCRs).Â
