My mom's at The Cedars Assisted Living right now. They don't have enough employees to give the residents the care that they need, but it's not the employees fault, it's the administration. They had a positive case of COVID and they've been locked in their room for a month. I went to visit her through her window and I couldn't get up to her window because of the snow. I told my husband that it was like visiting a monkey in a zoo. I could hardly see my mother. I'm looking through a window and that's not the way that you should have to visit your mother. Before they went corporate it was a very nice place to live, and it used to be owned by churches in the town, then they sold it to a corporation. Now they share an administrator and the nurses with their sister facility in Huxley, so there's just not enough staff. The staff tries and I really like them, but I know it's not their fault. Their facility is nice and their rooms are roomy. It is more like an apartment and everything's clean. As far as I know I haven't been able to be in there since last March, but before the COVID everything was clean, taken care of, and Mom enjoys their food. I've also eaten there before, and the food was good. Before COVID they had activities like exercises, and they could still go out and do that. I understand COVID changed a lot, but we still have to remember that the mental health of these residents means something too. She's had her first vaccine and supposed to get her second vaccine soon. She should be vaccinated at the end of the month. She had a fall there a while back. I happened to see her black arm when I visited through the window, and they have not called me about her fall. That's when all this started rolling, that the communication just wasn't there. She had a goose egg on her head. She really had a bad fall, and I think she should have probably been taken to the hospital, but they never even contacted me that she had fallen. Right now, the activities are a zero. That's one reason I'm thinking of moving her, because she's a very social person, and she's sitting in her room by herself, and napping a lot, which isn't good for her. They're reasonably priced compared to other places.

We liked Madrid Homes a lot. The staff was very accommodating. The rooms were nice. They have good locked in closet. They served us a meal, and it was excellent. They have just about anything you would ever want to do. They have their church right in the building. You wouldn't have to leave the place. If we were needing that much care and help, it would have been very possible place to go.

Madrid Home for the Aged was willing to take my mother in the condition she was in. It's a very caring community. They were also aware of her financial situation and they're willing to work with us on that. They also have the extended care that she will need up until the hospice and respite care. And they were just very good to work with on our levels.

I did enjoy this facility. It had a nice atmosphere and all of the staff seemed respectful and on their game. It was nice because they had a juice machine that anyone could walk up to and get a bit of juice, so the kids loved that. They also had an indoor bird display with live birds that my uncle just loves to sit and watch. My uncle seems to be doing very well in their care and has even improved in health since arriving there last year. I did find however that it was a bit cold in the building and the hallways were bare. They could use some more pictures on the walls to make it more homely or some lamps of some sort to set the mood in the rooms. All and all i thought it was a nice place and as long as he's happy I'm happy.

The apartments are nice and require no buy in. The staff is helpful and very friendly. You receive that small town care and friendliness, as if you are family. The staff call to check on you every day and are on call for emergencies. They are connected through an underground hallway with the Nursing Home. When my father was in the home, my mother could walk over to visit him without worrying about the weather. I would recommend the Madrid Home Community to anyone looking for care in Central Iowa.
