I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was a resident at The Villages of San Luis Obispo. They were spectacular and we want to go back there. They were really attentive and very friendly and they had a lot of activities. It was a good landing spot. We all felt thankful that it existed. It had enough independence and enough group things to give my mom a variety of experiences. I could wish they had an art room but that's zero compared to everything else. My mom would like to have more interesting art stuff than what they do. They had regular music programs like singing, as well as people who come in to play the piano in the lobby, which a lot of people come by. There were a lot of people actively doing puzzles or watching movies. They had ways in which people could gather. There was exercise time, art activities, as well as fun social things with the lunch, and they had different little trips you could sign up for to drive out to see little side scenes. They also had private drivers you could get to take you places.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm in The Villages at The Palms. I really like the climate and the community and am very pleased with the place overall. The food is excellent, and the staff is nice to work with. I wished the rent was a little lower, but I understand because it covers everything. There's a lot of activities. Two people work to arrange presentations, shows, movies, and exercises classes, and you can keep busy with that if you want to. Both of the ladies who work on that are really nice, cooperative, and helpful. They only serve breakfast and dinner, and we can get lunch, but we have to pay for it. Just across is The Oaks, which is very similar to The Palms. They don't serve regular breakfast, but the people at The Oaks can come to the Palms for breakfast if they want to. It's a little more upscale in terms of furnishing. The Oaks is a large unit with four courtyards. There's a long building along the south side, another long building in the middle, and another long building on the north side. Those are all apartments and offices that are enclosed at the west and east ends. There's a center court with a swimming pool and tables. The dining room is on the second floor with a picture window that looks out over the swimming pool. It's a nice place.

I visited this facility

The Villages of San Luis Obispo is our second choice. We just went crazy on the size of the units. They were small because of the fact they took over student housing instead of building from the ground for senior citizens. The bathrooms are very tiny. They had some nice units called the cottages. We weren’t able to tour the rooms because they were 100 percent occupied. Their dining rooms were nice, and they had a swimming pool. Their building was nicely decorated too. They have a lot to offer. They have clubs and bingo game going on when we were there. I was impressed with the people. Everybody we encountered was super friendly. It was mainly the lady who gave us a tour. She was terrific, and the front desk staff.

I visited this facility

We're going to The Villages of San Luis Obispo. They're very nice and it's a very open place, which was why I picked it. Every part of it goes outside. It has a beautiful pool and a hot tub and there's a fireplace out in the courtyard that is very open like in a nice hotel. It was very lovely. The dining room was very good, but they're upgrading it. They've got a lot of things to do, all kinds of activities, and they also have aerobics.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother is in The Villages. They try hard to keep all the people happy, but I think they can use a little more staff. The rooms and the apartments are very nice, and the food is good. The people are very nice and courteous. There are a lot of people there, and they are kind of doing numerous jobs. I think it will be nice if they have one person that is kind of in-charge and monitoring how the residents are going along. If they have like a social worker that can talk to them, not necessary be taking care of their immediate needs like medicine, dressing or that kind of thing, but just their psychological needs or they are just concerned.

I visited this facility

The Villages was way too big for a person that has memory care, and she got lost there. She wouldn’t even know how to get back to her room, but they were very nice, and they have three buildings.

I visited this facility

The Villages was nice, but not quite as nice as the other facility. The only thing that we didn't like about it was that it was just really, really large, and there were a lot of facilities that were not connected. Like if you have to get to the main dining hall, you have to go outside across the parking lot to get to that. Other than that, it was very nice. The staff was very friendly and interacted with a lot of people that were there. Everyone seemed happy. They were more than glad to let us come in and look at the rooms because they were full.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The Villages was very good, and they have a very good staff. It is updated. My relative is on the independent side, but I have heard that the assisted living side is also very good. I would recommend this facility.

I visited this facility

My sister and I went to visit Garden Creek, and the visit was very positive. We like the cleanliness and the friendliness of the people. We also like the organization and the layout of the building that we saw. We also like the aroma, as it is very pleasant. We noticed that they have music entertainment going on. I also saw puzzles, and that is one of our favorites. We also saw a man reading in the library room which is very quiet and nice, and I like that. The rooms worry me because it’s small, and I am afraid that is hindering me from going to that facility.

My sister-in-law was in The Villages. They had nice rooms. I ate with her several times; it was very good. The dining area is beautiful. They had bingo. They had all kinds of things going on all the time. It was very nice.

Visited this facility

The Villages of SLO has independent living for active seniors, assisted living and memory care (located at a different location in SLO). It is built in a former Cal Poly dorm and still has that feel, though it is much better maintained than a college dorm. The landscaping, decor and maintenenace is done really, really well. The residents are happy and social. Upon entering the courtyard you will see an outdoor fireplace where happy hours are hosted and an inviting pool - rare for many senior communities. Two meals a day are included in the monthly fee and the apartments have full kitchens. They provide transportation around SLo during their scheduled travel times, but people love that they can actually walk across the street to convenient shopping. The Villages offers a full schedule of activities, including excercise classes every day. They make a concerted effort to maintain an active resident population and provide the amenities and activities for their residents to stay healthy. Some people complain about the fact that the buildings are separate and to get from their apartment to the dining room, you have to walk across the courtyard. On a beautiful day (which most are in SLO) being outdoors is a pleasure, but on a rainy or cold day, it is understandable to wish for hallways. The staff is friendly and attentive, the food is very good and the residents seem to be truly enjoying themselves.
