Mom was placed in Oak Creek. She was there for three months. They were accommodating. They let her keep her dignity as well as her freedom to move around the facility. She had previously lived in a different facility that didn't allow her to do those things. At Oak Creek, they paid a lot of attention to her. It was well-staffed. It was clean. The food was great. It was just everything that you could want. The staff was great, too. The food was delicious, especially compared to a couple of other places we had tried. You could do individual rooms, but Mom had a shared room. It was a little bit older, but it was clean. The facility is shaped in one big circle, which is great. I would recommend it to everyone. We chose it because of its proximity to where I live, its price came with everything that we needed at that time, and I've heard great things about it my whole life.

I was looking for a memory center for my grandfather and so I was looking through the different places. What was nice about Oak Creek was that they had a single cost for all of their care. It didn't have a bunch of the different tiers that you have to go through with memory care, so I would know what price it would be each month since I have to use my grandfather's funds that he had in his account for his care. Knowing that that's the same price would be there every month was very nice. He has a shared room with another gentleman, and he has his own closet space and there's a window that looks out onto a patio. The location is up in the hills of Castro Valley, and it's a beautiful setting surrounded by trees so you can hear the birds chirping. It's a very nice place for him. He seems to be happy with what he's eating. The facility is very clean. They clean everything every day, including the rooms. They have plenty of activities that they do. I received a video of him over the weekend where he was singing along to the Christmas carols and somebody was playing the piano. That was very nice to see that he is ingratiating himself with the rest of the people there and he's feeling very comfortable. The staff seems very caring and very attentive. I've gotten a few calls with updates, just letting me know how he's doing and how he's acclimating himself. They're very nice, very friendly, and are willing to be very accommodating no matter what it is that we've asked them to help him with. They have been nothing but fantastic for us and it eased our hearts knowing that he is being well taken care of and that he's happy. He's never really been somebody who is joined in a lot of activities, and they've gotten him to be active in that.

The guy who gave us the tour at Oak Creek was knowledgeable. There wasn't anything outstanding there. It was clean and everybody looked taken care of. They were in a small area doing some kind of activity with some people in wheelchairs. My father is not at that level yet, but everybody's at a different place in their travel with Alzheimer's dementia. I think it was fine for what was there. They can hold maybe 24 residents and it's mostly a shared room and they were OK. Nothing to write home about. They had a nice small outdoor area. The staff was friendly and helpful with anything we asked them, but my mother didn't like the feel or the environment. It was different than the other places I've visited personally. It was an older building. I think I would have been OK with it, but mom thought it was too closed in.

The staff was friendly and attentive to the needs of the residents. The facilities were clean. The overall feel of the place was friendly and welcoming, but there was an overall pall throughout the place. I think it was all the senile old people. When you get down to it, Alzheimer's patients are really depressing to be around, as they are all breathing reminders of our own impending mortality. Care facilites seem aimed mostly at relatives coming to visit, and less at the actual residents themselves. I'm sure this can't be helped, as the residents are mostly unaware of their surroundings, but the whole affair remains unsettling. I don't like spending time there.

I really enjoyed my visit with my client in Oak Creek Center. He had a progressive case of Alzheimer's that was causing him to forget nearly everything - including the name of his relatives. Oak Creek put him on a green veggie diet to help his symptoms - and it seemed to do a lot for him. I'm sure that the area here also helped him - as the air comes in very clean off of the San Fransisco bay in Castro Valley. He seemed to be doing much better after a month here than he ever has since I have worked with him. I would most definitely recommend this facility for Alzheimer's care for anyone in the Hayward / SF / Castro Valley area.
