I visited this facility

I toured MorningStar Senior Living of Hayward. They're very nice, the rooms and staff. I liked it a lot, and it was very in-depth in stuff compared to a lot of places I visited. This place is very good. It's very clean and has very spacious rooms. This is a one bedroom. It's got a living room. It's very bright and airy. They have a nice courtyard. I wish they were bigger.

Provider Response

The Room was just right for a single person. It was Easter Sunday and my sister had an amazing brunch with Champagne. She had just moved into her unit on Saturday, March 31, 2024.

I visited Casa Sandoval Senior Living. Their staff was super helpful. It was very clean, and the rooms looked very nice. The staff and the host were really great and answered all our questions. The one-bedroom was amazing, it was way more than I thought it would be. It looked really spacious. The studio that they showed me was also really great, with nice appliances that came with the apartment. For activities, the classes and the Bible study was something that I think my dad would like; that was great to see.

Rooms are newly remodeled. The staff was very accommodating. We ate there on two occasions and the food was excellent. Larger facility, variety of people for interacting, large exterior patio. Prices comparable. Lots of activities. Transport to appts and church.

So far, my mom is really happy at Casa Sandoval Senior Living. Everything is great. They're very friendly, cooperative, sweet, nice, and very helpful. It's like living in a nice hotel. It is nice and clean. The size of her room is just perfect. We had dinner last night and it was delicious. Everything was really good.

I visited this facility

Casa Sandoval Senior Living is an independent living and assisted living. Their memory care is in process at that time. Many years ago, my father-in-law lived there. It's a seven-story building, and they're redoing it. My mom is hoping that when they open the memory care there (because it's only two miles from her house), maybe my father can be moved there. This was number two of the choices when I was doing it. They're almost finished remodeling the whole building. You could have a studio, one- or two-bedroom independent living or studio, one- or two-bedroom assisted living. The ones that I saw that they remodeled were beautiful. The staff that I've interacted with on several occasions was very good. The environment was comfortable and homey. The outside of the building has had scaffolding on it for the last two years, so people might be put off by that, but it's just part of what they're doing. They started from the seventh floor, and they were working their way down. Of course, memory care was on the second floor, so it's pretty much the last thing they were working on, but they've done a nice job. They were working one floor at a time, so it's been completely functional the whole time. They've got a large kitchen dining room, an area where people can stop and get coffee, and a nice common area. The studio has a bathroom, but they've remodeled everything. So, everything was nice and clean. They had, for assisted living, a small refrigerator and a stovetop, but they get to decide whether you get that or not because some people have a little bit of a memory issue, so they don't want them cooking. Everything's nice and had sufficient space. The independent living places were super nice. They can have their meals there and do housekeeping once a week. Somebody comes in every day and empties your garbage. Even if you're independent living, you still get the housekeeping and taking care of everything as part of your rent. They were very helpful over the phone and said, "Bring your mom whenever she's ready and maybe come in the afternoon when we have more activities and things going on. In the morning, it's a little quieter." The staff was responsive.

I had an in-person tour of Casa Sandoval Senior Living. The facilities are currently in construction and being remodeled. The staff was very welcoming, transparent, and able to answer all my questions. Overall, it was a good tour. All residents were properly taken care of, and they were lively. They were doing bingo when I got there. They showed me a one-bedroom accommodation. There is a waitlist for a studio. It was nice and newly remodeled. They have activity rooms, a theater, and a physical fitness center. They have an extensive amount of activity. I have a copy of their menu, and the menu seems pretty diverse in its offerings.

Provider Response

We’re so glad you enjoyed your tour of MorningStar. Seeing is believing, always.

Casa Sandoval Senior Living was very nice. It was in the midst of a remodel. I thought it was nice before, and it's really nice now. The old rooms were OK, though I haven't seen the newly remodeled rooms. All the staff members I've met have been very helpful and pleasant. I haven't tried the food, but I had two friends that stayed there, and they liked the food. One of my friends got involved in playing cards or something, and he seemed to be happy with the association that he got. I've never had any problems with the staff. They seem to start out at a reasonable price, and the prices do get much higher depending on the care you need.

I had relatives who used to stay in Casa Sandoval Senior Living. The best thing I liked about them was they put my aunt in a location and a place where it was very easy for her, especially, to get to the dining facilities and everything she needed. She was very forgetful and could get lost. So, they made sure that she had a room right across the way from the dining facility, and that made it perfect for her because she could go right out and go right back to her room without having to go up and down the elevators and try to find her room. The staff was very professional with the family. They were always on top of things. They're remodeling the place right now. They had a very good policy for visiting, especially as COVID started loosening up a little bit. As long as you made plans in advance to come to visit, they would have a visiting area for you. They tried to accommodate you, knowing that visitation with relatives is very important, and I appreciated that. The activities were also just perfect for them.

I had an in-person tour of Casa Sandoval Senior Living. I liked the main area better, compared to the other facility, they seemed to have a more common area. Casa Sandoval is under severe renovation. It's going to be gorgeous from what we saw. They have a couple of very beautiful examples of the apartment they could show us. So this one was nice. They did say that they are giving a discount because of that. The staff members were excellent. They were really good while we were there, kept their cool, helped me take care of my husband well. And then we move back on. The facility was beautiful. I could tell from where we were, what we could see like the dining room is not being worked on right now, and it's very clean and set up very nice. They had a movie area, a pool table, a much nicer outdoor area space, and a men's group. They did not have any studios available right now. They have you move into a one-bedroom, and they reduce it. Then you got to be on the waitlist to be able to move into a studio, so that's the downside.

We looked at Casa Sandoval Senior Living in Hayward, which was excellent. All of the staff were excellent. They showed us a 1-bedroom apartment, and it was beautiful. They were going through a remodeling, and it was really good. They had both family and common rooms. They were nicely appointed. They're going through construction right now, so we couldn't see everything. Even the temporary setup they had was still nice, while they're under construction. They also had an outdoor seating area with some open seats.

Provider Response

Thank you! You have testified to the love we feel for our resident-seniors.

I visited Casa Sandoval Senior Living for my mother. The staff was friendly, the apartment spaces and layout were nice, and they're updating the building. That's something I looked forward to at the time, because it was older. The food wasn't totally healthy, some things were very processed. They had an ice cream parlor, they had musical entertainment come in from outside entertainers, and they had outings.

My mother has moved into Casa Sandoval. So far, so good. She is a little anxious, but it is getting better. The staff has been good. My mom has a nice one-bedroom apartment. From what I have been told, the food has improved because they have new management. I have already recommended this community to someone. It would be a good community for someone who can afford it. If my mother would come out of her room, they would take her down to exercise classes and other programs that they have. They have a nightly movie, too, but so far my mother hasn't come down yet.

Our mother, who just passed away, was a resident of Casa Sandoval for 9 years. We are so happy we selected Casa Sandoval. What most impressed us was the wonderful, loving and caring staff who constantly went out of their way to assist my mother. The staff are truly dedicated towards being as helpful and positive as possible. In addition to the highly dedicated staff members, we were quite impressed with all of the various activities which serve to stimulate the residents including various celebrations, socials, daily outings, sing-alongs, church services as well as a variety of other meaningful activities. Growing old with declining physical and mental ailments is a hard process. We are pleased that our mother was able to spend her final years in a facility full of dedicated staff members who consistently went out of their way to provide her with a superior level of physical and emotional support

My father-in-law is settled at Casa Sandoval. It is five minutes from us. They have really good food, activities, a lot of residents, and spacious apartments. The staff is very nice. It's close to an area where he could go out and walk to the grocery store or the bank. The only thing is that some of the furnishing in the living room is a little bit older, and the carpeting in the hallways could be replaced. He is at the moment in the independent living, but we will be moving him down. We tried the food, and personally I like a little more seasoning on my food, but they have to cook for everybody, so it's a little bland. They have salt and pepper there, so you could do it yourself. They had the standard activities, but they could do a few more.

Casa Sandoval was clean, spacious, and decorated nicely. The staff works hard to decorate for each holiday, each event. They have all kinds of activities surrounding the holidays and special events for family, friends, and residents to participate in together. They have 1 bedroom apartments that I have seen, and they may have other sizes that have small kitchen, a dining room, and a living area. They’ve got several windows, a bathroom, a hallway, a bedroom and 2 closets.

I was able to have a visit at Casa Sandoval, and this one was set up differently. It was more like a big hotel, and it was a very active place. When we got there, there was some music going on. It was an older place, and when I saw their rooms, it was not that nice. The bathrooms needed updating. When I was there, one of the elevators were not working, so that meant everybody had to go on one elevator.

My sister is now at Casa Sandoval. She still feels that they’re a little expensive, but she seems to be OK with it. She would rather be in an apartment by herself. As far as I’m concerned because I don’t live there and she does, I think security is relatively good. I see no problem with security. It’s a great location for her. The apartment is adequate. I went for a Sunday brunch, and it was excellent, but I’ve never eaten during the week. They are staffed well. As far as I’m concerned, they have enough activities, it is just the matter of my sister wanting to join activities. They have bingo and balance classes. I have seen them in the afternoon. There are lots of activities that are available there.

My sister moved into Casa Sandoval more than six months ago. Her daughters live 10 or 15 minutes away, so they're able to visit her. It’s very convenient, but she doesn’t like the amount of money she’s paying for it. However, the other places we looked at were similar for the same cost, so there’s not much difference. There are a lot of activities going on, and she’s slowly partaking in them.

Casa Sandoval was very nice but a lot older and a different type of structure with close to 200 rooms. It seemed to be an old apartment complex that was converted into individual assisted apartments. This would be my second choice. It had three or four floors, which I didn't like. I went before Thanksgiving, and they had decorations in the halls and things that kind of livened it up a little. The food was decent; they offered me a couple of choices, so it wasn't like I only had one thing to choose from and that was it.

Casa Sandoval was newer, but still kind of old. The people were very friendly, and their prices were really good, but it was kind of depressing. The rooms were small and not very nice. It is very popular because of their pricing but housed a lot of very old, debilitated residents. My sister is only 65 and that makes it hard for her to be in a place like this because she is so young, so the overall atmosphere seemed kind of depressing to her.

They had different levels of care depending on how much care you need, and then you pay accordingly. I looked at a one-bedroom, which had a living room, a kitchenette, a walk-in shower, a wash basin, and a toilet. It had a closet in the hallway. The caretakers were nice, but Casa Sandoval was a little bit older.

The staff at Casa Sandoval has been excellent. Our aunt is very difficult. She is a Greek and has communication issues. She is even very rude sometimes. Thankfully, they have been very patient and helpful with her. We have had to move up to a level of care already. She has gotten worse physically since she has been there. So far, they have been able to accomodate things. My aunt and I are not thrilled with their food though. She doesn't go to the dining room because the food is brought to her room. It is usually cold when the food gets to her. The situation is not very appealing. Other than that, everything seems to be very well managed there. The place is clean and we are very happy with them.

Casa Sandoval is where I really want to get my parents in. I was impressed with the interaction among the people as well as with the care that the workers gave. I was impressed with their meal setup, too. They had a lot of activities available for seniors as well. They take them out on field trips and things like that, and there are activities going on inside the facility itself. The apartments were excellent -- very roomy. The staff was very professional. They'd take the parents out for lunch, and the food was excellent. I got the chance to meet the owner of the place, who was very cordial. I don't have any recommendations on how they can improve. Their pricing was very reasonable as well.

The atmosphere is very pleasant at Casa Sandoval. The food is excellent. I think the staff is overly parental with my mother, and she objects to that. When she moved in, the apartment wasn’t really ready. There were light bulbs that didn’t work, and they hadn't moved the closet pulls down lower like she requested. I wasn’t impressed with that. The person who does their marketing, I guess, told me that they would take of the long-term care insurance, but they didn’t. I think they should have told me because I could take have taken care of that in a timely manner. Her apartment is very nice and very roomy. It's nicely done. The layout is nice and the shower is great. They don’t have the television channels that have old TV programs, and I think that would have been a good thinking process on their part.

I visited this facility

The rooms at Casa Sandoval were large. The place felt safe, and there were a lot of safety features. It was a fairly large facility with seven floors. The more acute situations are closest to the main dining room on the first floor. But every floor has their own gathering areas. There's Hayward Creek running behind it, and you can see the ducks. It's a really nice enclosed patio area. You're safe, but you can still be close to nature. The only drawback was how far Mom might have to walk to get to an elevator. So I would want to be on a waiting list as we get closer to the time, so that we could choose a room that is closer to an elevator. Also, if my aunt moves in with her, it's only an additional $700 to the room, which is much less than the other places that I liked. Everybody was friendly and they knew everybody's names. They were very good about introducing people who are new there to people with like interests so that they could make friends more easily. It just seem very non-clinical and very friendly. I ate lunch there, and the food was good. They have a lot of activities. The last thing they did was kind of "Around the World in 80 Days." People who've been to other countries shared their experiences. They have something going on all the time. They celebrate every holiday possible and decorate for everything. Nobody is tied to a wheelchair. It smelled totally clean. They check on you, feed you, and if you don't show up for lunch or breakfast, they go figure out why. So it felt very caring, sterile, and also fun. There's a movie and a game room on each floor. I really like the roominess of the rooms. They have a complete kitchen where they could cook. There's a microwave, oven, and 2-burner stove.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We moved my brother at Casa Sandoval sometime in April. The people that gave us the tour were absolutely wonderful and very caring. They were very informative and very kind. They gave us all information with regards to the cost and the services that are rendered there. We even came there unannounced, but they accommodated us and showed us around. The place was very clean. They had all kinds of spring decorations all over the lobby area for the people that lived there and they have a lot of activities going on and they also have entertainment. The apartments are nice. The food is absolutely restaurant-quality food. The dining halls have table cloths with cloth napkins. I think it's very reasonably priced at $3800 a month for somebody that gives all of his medications and check on him every two hours round the clock. They do all of his laundry. I have elderly parents and definitely that's where they will go when the times comes without question.

I am a friend or relative of resident

For the last 30 years we have lived in Virginia. During this period we encouraged our now 100 year old mother to leave California to be closer to our family. She spent a few months in Virginia and decided she wanted to return to California—her home. In early 2008 at age 95 she concluded that living in her house was too difficult and it was time to move, but to remain in California. We agreed and researched/visited several living facilities in the Bay Area. At the time the collective conclusion was that Casa Sandoval offered a family oriented environment to include individual personal care, a wide variety of social activities, and superb living conditions. Our mother moved to Casa Sandoval in March 2008. Her independent living apartment was well equipped, quiet, and had a view of the stream and trees that she particularly enjoyed. The physical move and new environment was a definite change after living more than 50 years in her ‘own’ house. The Casa staff appreciated the situation and made sure she felt at home. After a one week adjustment period our mother told us she was happy, enjoyed being ‘taken care of’ and did not want to return to her house. Obviously we too were happy and somewhat surprised that the transition to Casa living was so short—definitely a credit to the Casa staff and their compassion. In early 2012 the Casa staff contacted us concerning our mother’s physical condition. Although she was mentally sound, they observed that her physical ability had recently deteriorated to the point of it being difficult for her to participate in social activities. Shortly thereafter we visited our mother. Typically we visit Casa 2-3 times a year and since our September 2011 visit it was clear the Casa staff was correct. A decision had to be made; do we move our mother to another facility or elect to remain at Casa? Our mother wanted to remain, but we wanted to explore the options. After due diligence, we determined that Casa was the best decision. During the course of the decision making process we met with both the owner (Wai) and the Executive Director (Ann) . They were both very knowledgeable about our mother’s current condition and relayed their concerns regarding her well-being and quality of life. We asked if we could independently talk with the Casa staff and spend some time in the assisted living facility—they encouraged us to do so. Our mother is currently an assisted living resident. Since the move to the new location, her spirits and general health have improved and she is once again able to enjoy many of Casa’s social and educational activities. When it is time for us to leave our home, we look forward to being Casa residents. Besides the weather in the Bay Area is much better than Virginia!

Casa Sandoval has a warm and caring environment. My dad has lived here for a number of years and he is very happy with the staff and facilities. Plus the food is excellent!

My papa stayed here for several months before he required a different type of care. When I came to visit I thought the facility was beautiful, very clean and classy. It reminded me of a fancy hotel. The staff was friendly, and effective and they seemed to have everything under control. The room my papa lived in was a very good size, and clean with plush new carpet. They also offered great meals and many activities. I was very impressed with this place! I know my family and I felt comforted knowing our papa was staying at such a lovely facility.

Visited this facility

In the process of researching a suitable assisted living facility for my grandmother, I came across Casa Sandoval, and decided to take a tour. I wanted to choose a place that was close to where I live. When I first walked in, the staff was very friendly and happy to show me around. I was impressed with all the amenities that they offer, as well as beautiful views of the Hayward Japanese Gardens and nearby creek where ducks are often swimming. Casa Sandoval provides reading areas, a billiards room, a theater room, dining area, an ice cream parlor, and a small exercise room for their residents. I like that they are really focused on encouraging seniors to be more active in the community by hosting various activities, including day trips to museums and restaurants, volunteering, Bible study, which I know my grandma would love, and other events. Apartments come with microwaves, refrigerators, and built-in intercom systems. They seem to have a good security system, with on-call dedicated staff and security cameras in the hallways for 24/7 monitoring. I felt that my grandma would be safe, happy, well taken care of here. I will definitely consider Casa Sandoval as my grandmother's new home.
