The Area on Aging (AAA) is a government outreach program. Its mission is to improve the lives of the area’s elderly. Different programs help address seniors’ social and physical needs, including healthy meal planning assistance, health screenings, and programs about topics that pertain to the elderly, such as fall prevention, warning signs of a heart attack or stroke, and indications of the onset of dementia. Representatives of this agency also help seniors locate government benefits they’re entitled to.
Seniors who cannot afford their own durable medical equipment may borrow from the Great Lakes Loan Closet, which accepts donations and offers them to those in need. Items typically include mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and canes, access aids including wheelchair ramps, toileting and shower chairs and sometimes blood pressure cuffs and TTY kits.
Long-term Care Ombudsman Services address the needs of residents in long-term care homes such as assisted living. They oversee accommodations and can take complaints from residents about the staff or living conditions and alert any government regulatory bodies. Ombudsman representatives also help seniors and their families find accommodations in an assisted living community, including evaluating the individual’s needs, budget and preferences, giving an honest assessment of each community in the area.
