What to Consider About Assisted Living in Chesterton

Chesterton is a small town located near the sand dunes of Lake Michigan in Porter County, Indiana, about 50 miles southeast of Chicago. The city's history stretches back to the 1600s when French fur traders began trading with the area's native population. Today, Chesterton has nearly 14,000 residents, including a senior community that makes up 15% of the population.

Despite its small size, Chesterton has two assisted living facilities, and there are seven more nearby. In Chesterton, as in the rest of Indiana, assisted living facilities are officially known as residential care facilities, and they are licensed by the Family and Social Services Agency Division of Aging.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Chesterton

  • Retirees in Indiana pay state income tax on all types of retirement income except for Social Security benefits, which may affect how much money Chesterton seniors can put toward assisted living expenses.
  • The Chesterton area has no facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness, with the nearest major hospital located in Valparaiso.
  • Chesterton is home to a dynamic arts and culture scene. Local senior centers may take field trips to locations like the 4th Street Theatre, which hosts plays and performances throughout the year.
  •  The Sperling's Comfort Index for Chesterton is 6.9 out of 10, indicating that the city's weather is more comfortable than in most of Indiana. Year-round temperatures range between 17 and 82 degrees, which may make the city a good option for seniors who enjoy experiencing distinct seasons.
