My mom has moved into Brookdale Valparaiso. They were the only place that could offer all the services that my mom needed. Everything that she's had problems with at the other facilities, the hospital or clinics or whatever, she hasn't had to deal with there. As a matter of fact, she recently had a problem where she had a UTI, and we didn't know what was going on, and the nurse there decided to send her to the hospital, which was the best thing possible at the time because they found out it was like a blood infection. The staff are very friendly. I haven't had any trouble with anyone there. My mom's room pretty much got the layout that I've seen in most of the other places. It's a one-bedroom. When you walk in, it's got a little kitchen, there's a small living room, then a bedroom and bathroom. The food is pretty good there. The dining area is like a small restaurant type of thing. They do a lot of activities. I'm not exactly sure what all they do, but I know they do a lot of things. She does participate, and she is hardly in her room because they're always on an activity. Sometimes they play bingo, and sometimes they go places. The atmosphere is pretty laid back, like a community type vibe. They encourage people to bring their families there and spend time with them there.

Brookdale Valparaiso - AL seemed like a nursing home facility. People weren't out and about. They just seemed very closed off. The room seemed fairly comfortable. I met the admissions lady, and she was very nice.

The director of Brookdale Valparaiso was very friendly and knowledgeable. I liked that the facility was small, just 42 or 43 units. I liked the design of it. It was just a big square, so you just keep going down the hall and turning, and eventually you're back to where you were. The dining area, to me, just didn't look very inviting. I didn't like the way they did the food service. Just breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a specific time, and you can't go whenever you want to. I think it would be a good place. As far as services go, I believe it's a licensed facility, and they have a nurse on staff 24 hours a day. Then as far as choosing what kind of care it would be for my mother, they had different levels of care. So, I felt like their level of care would be appropriate for her. It was a little older, which was OK, but the apartments were very small, and that was a concern for us. I really think it was a nice facility. It just was not at the top of our list.

I chose Brookdale Valparaiso for mom, because of the caring people. Everyone I talked to and everyone that I dealt with just had my mom's best interests at heart all the way. She's been there a week now and they're just taking wonderful care of her. I am really happy to have found a place for her that treats her so well and takes such good care of her. The facility itself is very nice. It's not brand new, but they have very quality and nice suites. Plus the place smells fresh. The food is wonderful. My mom can't comment enough about how good it is. She's been participating in a daily exercise routine, on a trivia night, and in physical therapy. Right now, they're getting her set up with bingo. So, they're keeping her very busy.

We toured Brookdale Valparaiso. It was very homey, a small community, and it was more of what we were looking for. It was only one level, and I think they only had 49 or 50 apartments, so it was more of a community feel than the other place. We would have chosen that place, but my mom wanted to stay in Illinois. It was more like a home situation. We liked that it was all on one floor. We liked that the apartments weren't too big; it would have been overwhelming to have all that space for her. We really liked that she would be able to access every part of the facility just staying on one floor. What drew us to that is that it was smaller, and we thought she might have gotten more attention at a smaller place. Also, all of the meals were included. Another thing that they did, too, is they were telling us that they encouraged the residents to eat dinner in the dining areas so that they don't just stay in their room. They would deliver it to her, but we liked that she would have to go out and get her food.

My friend is in Brookdale Valparaiso and she loves it. She likes the food, and somebody is always there to check on her. She has a lot of privacy if she wants it. Her room is nice, she's in a smaller room, but there is plenty of room. It's very clean and organized. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. They are there when you need them, and they would give you privacy when you don't want them around. They have somebody that does their laundry for them. They have a van or a bus that takes them around different places. They do crafts and all kinds of stuff. It is expensive but it is worth it.

I felt Brookdale Valparaiso was adequate and would have been my second choice. The apartments were small. The person we met was friendly and helpful.

Brookdale Valparaiso has all kinds of various activities to help people with their memory skills, they have singing and baking, and they visit various local sites like stores, churches and local museums. My mom has been there for 5 years, and we're happy with it. The food is fine, and they have a variety like chicken, beef, fish, various vegetables, and dessert. It's not a 5-star restaurant, but it's very good.

Brookdale Valparaiso was great and seemed really nice and relaxing. If I were to go some place, this is where I want to go. We like it a lot for our cousin. They have a side that is more for people having issues with memory, which is what I would choose for my cousin.

The apartments at Brookdale Valparaiso were nice. It helped mom have her own space. She’s always wanted to be on her own. Food was touch and go. Some days it was good, but the food I ate was great. Mom has some food allergies, and they were very good at not giving her those specific food. The care at this facility is phenomenal. They were absolutely perfect with my mom. I could not ask for better people to watch over her.

I visited Brookdale Valparaiso, and I liked it very well, but the price was just out of my range. They were very nice, and the rooms were very clean. They had a lot of open spaces for play time or gatherings. They individual rooms were small, but I did not see any problem with that, because when you were feeling down, you did not really need a large room to lay in; and when you were up, you could be out of your room and socialize more. There were a lot of opportunities to socialize there. They had exercise classes where they do chair exercise. There were a number of living room areas that were available. I never tried the food, but I did look at the menu, and it seemed like it was good food.

I went out and checked Brookdale Valparaiso. It was very nice. It was just out of my mom's price range. I was impressed with just about everything that I saw. The rooms were very nice. The dining area was nice. Their activities -- they had everything posted, plus they had it in each resident's room so they would know what activities were going on. The staff was very nice and helpful. They had breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was told they could have snacks if they wanted them, or they could have some in their rooms if they wanted that. It was very clean. I thought everyone that I talked to that was in charge and the other staff were very knowledgeable and very caring about their job and the residents there.
