I wouldn't recommend the Rose of Sharon Family Home at all. It would not be a good match for my friend. They deal with a lot of memory issues in patients. It was a larger facility, and they had a lot of patients there. They have a little bit more of a variety of places to be in the home, that's what I liked about it. But the level of care, to me, it looked like it was substandard. They had one person on duty for a dozen patients, and that's just not enough. I talked to some of the patients there and they weren't enthusiastic about the place. The staffing and the level of care we're inadequate. The staff wasn't off-putting, but she wasn't overly helpful. She was by herself and was trying to manage those managing the patients' care while making their lunch at the same time. You just can't do that. I saw what they were serving for lunch, and it appeared to be adequate. They have one common room. If you had guests that were over there, it would be inadequate facilities. It was quiet which I was pleased to see, but most of the people there spoke Spanish, which is fine. There's not a problem with that, but I don't speak Spanish. If somebody needed assistance and I was there, I may not be able to help them because I don't understand the language. That was a problem for me, not them.

This facility is very clean and has a huge park-like garden; there are horses across the dirt road and there is a very serene fountain in the semi enclosed porch. The house is spacious and open and the rooms elegantly and comfortably/homely furnished, but the residents are all so medicated and do not carry on conversations, they are all more advanced in Alzheimer's. My Dad didn't have anyone to talk to exept the staff person and his clothes were always mixed up with someone elses. I never saw him wear his own clothes. The owner seems to prefer giving even people with mild Alzheimer's, like my Dad, medication without asking permission from family just so the one person on duty can redirect residents better. Also, when I moved my Dad to a more suitable place after being given notice because I did not want my Dad on medication and the owner did not like that and called it 'interfering', my Dad's winter clothes were not packed and sent with him, even though I made sure to write his name on every item with permanent marker. After calling one day the owner insisted that his winter clothes were packed up and sent with my Dad. They were not and after sending e-mails twice about the issue, I still have no answer. The owner is not forthcoming at all about updates on the the welfare of residents and only seems to call when there is an issue she deems a problem. That was always the problem in all the time my Dad was there. Please also ote that there are no activities whatsoever. I'm also not convinced that residents are served enough food at meals and snacks are not available until dished out by the staff person.

I placed my Alzheimer's/dementia husband there. It is a spacious, formerly residential home with an acre of (fenced-in) land right in the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The place is bright, very clean, the food is great, and the owner is very caring and loving with her residents. In addition, it is less pricy than other group care homes I checked out. Highly recommended (can take up to 10).
