My friend has moved into Merrill Gardens. She likes the room, and the space of the facility. Everyone that I spent time with has been very friendly and helpful. It is a relatively new facility. It seems like they have activities every day, and they post that schedule. She had her first meal there last night, and it looked all good, and it was good portion size. To get in there initially, it's pretty expensive. The rent seems to be comparable to other locations for a newer room with more amenities in the room. For like a studio, they have a little kitchenette, and an apartment-size refrigerator.

I went to look at Merrill Gardens at Burien. They were nice, not as warm, but they were polite. The facilities were nice and clean. The outdoor was nice. You're not surrounded by trees, and I'm a big tree person, but they were nice and well-kept. The people seemed to be more active. My dad was having a hard time walking down the hallway. For every one step the resident made, he made about 20 trying to get down the hallway. It seemed like a more active environment, then that would be good for him. These people were just doing their job. They didn't put much effort, and it didn't seem they enjoyed their work.

I am on a waiting list for Merrill Gardens at Burien. The main thing I chose this place was because it's close to my daughter. It has an indoor swimming pool just across the street that I can walk to and a reasonable percentage of independent residents. The person who gave the tour was very nice too. The apartments shown to me were good. They have all kinds of rooms, from studios to bedrooms and it had a very pleasant atmosphere. They had lots of activities like arts and crafts, exercises, and more.

I went to Merrill Gardens at Burien two and a half years ago and it was fine, but it was not a good fit for my mother. There's too much walking from the room to the dining room and other activities. The staff was fine too. The facility was new, fresh, and clean. They had a washer and dryer in every unit and the rooms were nice.

We've chosen Merrill Gardens at Burien because it fits what we're looking for. It's very clean, very professional, and everybody's very pleasant, friendly, and easy to work with. We saw the one- and two-bedroom apartments. The lunch they provided was very nice, and we ordered off a menu. They showed us where they have the activities, and they have a really nice garden or picnic area with barbecues, tables, and umbrellas.

We were very impressed with Merrill Gardens. It was so popular that they had waiting lists both for their studio apartments and one-bedrooms. They go all the way from independent living through memory care since its an age-in-place facility. They have activities going on all the time. They do restaurant-style dining, and the menu was in plain English. Their chef won an award for Taste of Burien last year. They have very friendly staff and a retired doctor who comes in twice a month to deal with patients. They have a library and a book mobile come by. This is a much larger place, the woman we talked to described their activities as a cruise on land. They had a community room that could be reserved and a separate, nice computer room. They have a fitness center, outside instructors who come in to do yoga classes and Zumba. They have 10 different floor plans for a one-bedroom, studio apartments, and home health nurses, or hospice could be set up if needed. Its very nice, clean, well-kept, and 2 to 2 1/2 years old. We didnt see anything that bothered us at all.

My mother lived at Burien Merrill Gardens for about 9 months before she passed away in January. While the common areas and rooms are very nice and new, I found many things to be average or disappointing. The meals were average. The activities were average. The staff – other than a couple people – were disappointing (unfriendly, over-worked, aloof at times). Most disappointing, however, was the handling of my mother’s death. We did not receive any card, note, or call to express sympathy (such a simple gesture which would have meant much). We were not told they had my mother’s wedding ring for 1 week (meanwhile our funeral director was frantically trying to track it down!). And, most upsetting was that on the last day we were moving her things out of her unit (which had been paid until the end of the month), we arrived to find the new residents name on her door AND the new residents welcome package (with coupons, food, and other goodies) sitting on top of my mother’s bed! This was insensitivity at its worst! I wrote to the Burien MG and the MG Corporate Office in an attempt to find out why the handling was so horrible (and to suggest a kinder way of dealing with this situation – given they had had at least 4 deaths in a week and will surely have more to come!), but I never received a return call or letter. This tells me that it is just about the dollars – not the residents or the families. I would recommend looking into other retirement communities before Merrill Gardens.

I chose Merrill Gardens because it's new and seemed like a nice place to live. I don't like the food, it's terrible and everybody's always complaining about it. Whenever we ask the staff about something, they say that they'll see what they can do but nothing ever gets done. When you expect packages they don't write the packages down, so when it gets shipped in they can call your apartment and let you know. The facilities are great, but the management is not very good. Once a month they hold a residents' meeting and the same issues come up, but they just say to give them a chance since they're new.

Merrill Gardens at Burien is brand new. Their dining hours were from 7:00 to 7:00. It's restaurant-style where you have your menu, and you pick and choose what you want any time of the day. They also had a bar where you could see your food being cooked right there. They also had a drink bar. The facility was phenomenal. A lot of people were basically retired and active. It's located in a good area right downtown that had a lot of restaurants and a grocery store. Their studios were smaller than the other places.

My mother is moving into Merrill Gardens at Burien in April. The people who I have dealt with have been extremely helpful, considerate, and made me feel good when my mother had a panic attack about moving. The rooms are very clean and big, and have lots of light and wonderful bathrooms. My mother was super pleased with the kitchen. She will be close to the elevator. She is still struggling with the idea of having someone come and feed her and is not secure in that at all. She is going to be able to keep her car.

The tour at Merrill Gardens was great. It was a brand-new, nice facility. I would have loved my grandmother to be there. Everybody was very helpful and knowledgeable. They had a salon, a workout room, a library, a theater, and a garden area with a fountain. They had a special memory care unit and activities every day, but it was too expensive.

Merrill Gardens was very good. My wife thinks it's a nice facility. Everything is furnished. They have a restaurant in the facility. They're very active and have an activity director. You bring your own things to the apartment, which has a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and bedroom. The location is good in the center of town and has access to shops, grocery stores, and restaurants.
