About Chestnut Grove in Richmond, Virginia
One of the singular attributes that we are most proud of is how involved many of our residents' families are in daily life at Chestnut Grove.
Family members participate in many of our activities. We encourage family members to volunteer. And, of course, family members are ever-present regular visitors. We value our families as almost an extension of our staff. The door is always open to them as well as to friends of our residents.
We also work hard to stay in close touch by phone and/or e-mail with key family members so that they are regularly updated on the care and well being of their family member.

We went to look at Chestnut Grove. The food was just average. The facility is one story. The furnishings, wall coverings, and carpet were dated and a little worn. Probably the biggest barrier is that it's not flat in some areas, so there are some slope areas that are a challenge to navigate. They need some upgrades, some painting, and some new decorations. The tables have been there for a while. Everything looks functional, but it's been a while since there were any upgrades. The staff members were all great, dedicated, and very committed. They have a lot of continuity over many years.

My friend moved into Chestnut Grove. It's a very clean community, as far as the building and grounds. Everything is neat and seems very organized. It's the best care she had. The staff members were all very helpful and seemed very concerned for the residents there. My friend is in a semi-apartment with two rooms. She has a bedroom and another little room, where she can have a TV. She has a little refrigerator, a countertop, and cabinets in the kitchen. They seem to have quite a few activities and amenities for the residents. My friend requires heavy care. They feed her meals. If she gets out of bed, they have to have two people to help her out of the bed. She's getting extra care.

Families Beware! This facility has major staffing issues - starting with the Facility Director, who does not come across being sincere. Under his tenure, we have caught three nurses/aides sleeping on the job; had too many medication issues to count- prescriptions not being administered, lost medications, lapses in reordering, etc.; housekeeping issues; and there seems to be a revolving door on staff at all levels (in 3 years this is this second Facility Director, 3rd Nursing Director, etc. and I'm pretty sure there is a revolving door for aides. I have moved my Father out of this facility and they still not have returned all my Father's meds - and now are refusing to return my phone calls. My Father's physician is witness to the negligence of this staff. Don't bother reporting issues to upper management- they won't return your calls either. This place is in the business to make money- not provide care for the elderly. I can count on one hand the number of reliable, kind staff members - simply not enough. Fortunately my Father is alert and smart enough to know what was going on and let me know. I feel bad for other residents who are not aware, and their family members who are trusting the staff to do their jobs. They boast about being voted best assisted living facility - but I suspect they offered their staff an incentive to vote.

The chestnut grove community is a warm welcoming and friendly atmosphere. I've visited the facility often and I see the nurses taking time with the residents. The residents seem to enjoy their environment because you hear them talk about the good food. Also, I've seen some of the residents participate in the activities, they really have lots of fun.

Our family recently moved our Mom to Chestnut Grove and could not be happier with the results. We were so worried about our Mom as she was not eating well nor interacting with her neighbors in her former senior facility. We looked at several places, and chose Chestnut Grove because of the cleanliness, activities, Health Department ratings, and most of all the friendly and caring staff. Mom has shown dramatic improvement! She enjoys having so many activities to engage in, three great meals a day and every single staff member greeting her by name. You could not find a better place or better caregivers for your loved one!!!!

The moment I walked into Chestnut Grove I knew this was the place for my Grandfather. Everyone made us feel so welcome. There wasnt a person I passed who didnt say hello and ask if they could help us. My Grandfather has been here since April 2013 and the overwhelming feeling of care and hospitality remains the same. The staff is very accessible to me at all times if I need them. My Grandfather loves the staff, the food is outstanding, and the activities are appropriate and enjoyable. He now refers to Chestnut Grove as his home. I can leave him with confidence knowing that he will be taken care of while Im gone.

On October 22nd I will have completed my first year at Chestnut Grove. (My husband came a few weeks later.) I really did not choose to be here. The children chose it for me! After seeing it, our oldest son said he was ready to move in - so I thought that was a good recommendation. Before I come to the Grove, I had lost 20 pounds and how I have gained 25! The shows how much I enjoy the food - barbecued ribs, lasagna, cherry cheesecake, key lime pie - oh, yeah! Living here reminds me of the line from the TV show "Cheers" - "Where everybody knows your name" because they really do.

The facility has several services available for various levels of need. The rooms are relatively large and the schedule of activities are on par for other places. My Mother has been there 2 years, but I am now looking for an alternative location. There are two reasons for this. First, the nursing staff is almost impossible to find in the evenings. I regularly have great difficulty locating a nurse if I stop by in the evening. On a few occasions, I stopped by to pick-up my Mom for a weekend trip and could not leave until I located a nurse who could give me her medication. It was a real burden finding someone. Ultimately, this is my biggest disappointment. The other issues are minor -- heating in apartments include 1 radiator unit even in a 1-bedroom apartment; difficulty relocating my Mom to a unit that would minimize her walk to the eating area; the monthly fees have not been increasing very much during the economic downturn, but the fees are in no way cheap.

I was hoping that the Chestnut Grove Assisted Living facility was going to have everything I was looking for as I searched for a place to move my mother. My first choice of a facility turned out to be a disappointment and Chestnut Grove was number two on my list. I had my list of questions and my camera when I went for a tour. Chestnut Grove is a lot larger than it looks and it has a mix of residents. The apartments range from small a small studio unit to deluxe accommodations with two bedrooms. They are all spacious and have ample storage room, so even a small studio would be acceptable to residents who don't have that many personal belongings. Chestnut Grove provides support for all the activities of daily living, including dressing assistance, medication management, bathing, toileting, laundry, recreational activities and of course, three meals a days. Cable TV is included in the monthly rate, but you have to provide your own telephone line. The rates were fairly high (approximately $4,000 a month and up) and I experienced sticker shock when I realized that my mother would probably be assessed at a higher level because she needed a little more care than most. The nursing staff was cheerful and helpful, but they seemed uncomfortable when I wanted to take pictures of some of the areas in the facility. I was careful not have any residents in the pictures, but they still fussed whenever I whipped out my camera. To me, this was a red flag. What was it that they didn't want me to see? However, I quietly and quickly snapped my photos, since I wanted to rememeber what Chestnut Grove looked at. After visiting more than a dozen assisted living facilities, I was starting to forget which was which! The residents who live there seemed happy and content. There is an Alzheimer's unit, so those with severe impairment are kept separate from the rest of the population. I chatted with some of the ladies about how they liked living there, and they all seemed to have favorable replies. The one thing three of the ladies mentioned was that they did not have enough activities during the day, and frequently, their bingo games were canceled. Although this may seem like a minor thing, I knew my mother would never be happy in a facility that canceled bingo games! That, coupled with the high fees, made me put Chestnut Grove on the back burner for the time being. Although it was a very nice place with good support services, I decided to keep looking until I found a place that I knew would be ""home"" for my mom.
