I wouldn't recommend Sunstone Apartments. When you see it, it appears to be a great place, and there are some good people that live there. It's a 55-and-older apartment complex. I'm 63, and I am one of the three youngest people that live here in the whole complex. Everybody else is anywhere between 75 and 96, and most of them are either on walkers, canes, rollies, or scooters. I have a scooter because of mobility problems. Since I've been here in June, the place caught on fire, and forty-three of the tenants were displaced, and the office had nothing for them. It was totally up to the individual. In my experience in law enforcement, you don't take an 85- and 90-year-old person and put them in a situation where they're being displaced and not have help for them or help to deal with the insurance companies. The management company here does nothing. I have points that I had earned through a hotel group and helped two people get in the hotels. The personnel here is awful. I fell down the stairs on the 26th of last month, and I have yet, to this day, heard anything from the front office. If you want handrails on the side of the wall next to your bathroom or next to your toilet, you have to put them up yourself. Their office staff is almost nil and void. They're only here three days a week, and when they're here, they're in the office with the door locked. You have to go up and knock on the door and even ask permission to talk to somebody. They don't offer any kitchen help. You cook for yourself in your apartment (there's a kitchen in your apartment). The building is very well furnished, but it was very poorly built. They have electrical problems. The garbage disposals are always breaking down. There is always something going on here. The people are here because this is what they can afford. The only reason that I'm here is that my sister found this place for me because I was in the hospital at the time, and I needed to move out of where I was at. My sister came here, and she was impressed. In the beginning, everything was wonderful, but once they got you in there, it wasn't. There are people here that shouldn't be independent living. They can't maneuver the stairs without help, and they can't do other things without help. There are families coming in and out taking people to dialysis. It's more of an assisted living. There's a group of nurses that I began to know by first name basis that are in and out of here every day because they have clients here. That's not vibrant individual living, in my opinion. Once a month, the people that live here organize a potluck, and all Sunston will ever furnish is rotisserie chicken from Costco, and that's about it. They don't do anything extra. If we don't organize activities, they don't happen. We have a community committee, and once a month, they'll show a movie in the community room, and once a month they have a potluck. They have game night on Tuesdays, which consists of some of the people coming down and playing UNO and that's it. Another game day, which is Saturday, is just five or six people that gather together and play board games. Other than that, there's nothing. The apartments are lovely. They're great little apartments. It's not much more than an individual living by themselves would need. You've got a microwave, a stove, a refrigerator, and a garbage disposal. They repaint every time somebody moves out. However, once you step outside your apartment, it's a whole different world.

I was looking for independent living, and I visited one in Chesapeake. I liked Sunstone Apartments because it was far from the city noises like loud music and that kind of thing. It is quiet, and the apartments are wonderful. The apartment has a kitchen, living and dining room area, one bedroom, and a bathroom with lots of closet space. It has a patio outside, and it is nice. The community that it is in is not that large, but it is close to shopping, churches, and dining. It is close to an area that you can go out in, but it is far enough if you just want to take a walk for exercise. They do have a community area or a community room. The apartment complex is not that large, or at least it didn't look that big to me. You don't get a doctor in house, but in the bathroom and in the bedroom there are call buttons or call lights for you, so if you are having trouble during the night, you can always use that to call for assistance.
