Excellent facility with a very stable, kind, competent, and attentive staff. Mt brother has been a resident for over two years. The facility is always clean. Patients receive excellent individualized care. The food is good. The rehab is excellent. There's an active schedule of activities for residents. Concerns are addressed promptly and attentively. The social worker is kind, accessible, and quite helpful. The nursing staff is warm, caring and responsive. This is a stellar facility!

I had heard horror stories about nursing/rehab facilities but I was truly hoping and praying that if the time came for a loved to HAVE to go to one of these places, they would provide at minimum professional and basic care as they boast a “skilled nursing” facility. Sadly that was not the case at this facility. My mom arrived shortly after 8 PM, transferred from the hospital where she had stayed four days after a terrible fall resulting in broken ribs and hematomas (due to landing on cement steps) on her head and pelvis resulting in difficulty walking. Within two hours of arriving, the nightmare started; the hospital bed didn’t work and nobody bothered to come help. She asked for an extra pillow at least to TRY to make herself somewhat comfortable. They put a disposable underwear on her even though she refused as she had not had the need even while in the hospital – she was already going to the restroom with assistance; had even started walking a few steps in the hallway during her physical therapy sessions at the hospital. She just wasn’t ready to navigate the stairs to get to her bedroom and of course she doesn’t have a hospital bed at home to help her change positions… The pain medication that was given to her didn’t even take the edge off. The first night she called several times to go to the restroom to no avail. There were two females who not only ignored her calls for assistance but also proceeded to make fun of her accent (now mind you these two individuals are foreigners themselves with extremely heavy accents) When we tried to address these issues early in the morning (this required several phone calls attempting to reach the social worker or any other staff member - I won’t get into that as that would require a whole other long paragraph) the day staff made changes and she was more at peace, her bed was fixed, stronger medication was given finally around 2 PM -she even tolerated physical therapy. They helped her go to the restroom. We trusted that things were resolved so we allowed her to stay one more night in hopes that she would get stronger with the “skilled nursing staff” they boast of!!! The same two females returned for the night shift, same ineffective pain medication was given. (Unbeknownst to us, they kept her in a disposable underwear the entire stay) once again, the call button that the social worker made sure she trained my mom on 🙄 (my mom knows how to use the call button thank you very much – it seems to work just fine during with the day staff) was ignored. Early in the morning after the fourth time of her requesting help to go the restroom, one of those female staff members came into the room, proceeded to turn off the call button and went back out of the room. (A young female assistant came in later wanting to help you at one of those females stopped her from doing so reminding the assistant that she had the disposable underwear) My mom was fearful of these two female staff members as their demeanor was aggressive. They hurt her physically while wiping her down (even though my mom told her she didn’t need to be - she had just taken a shower right before she was discharged from the hospital; with assistance of course), when they shove the bed pan under her injured pelvis, when they wiped her off to change a disposable underwear that she didn’t soil… She recalls several residents screaming in pain and agony throughout the night - male, female, some sounded younger than her, others older than her. She was terrified of retaliation from these female staff members. She begged me not to say anything but I had to before we picked her up. Our wish is that they will make several changes for the sake of those residents that are staying; those that don’t get to go home. To say that she has been traumatized by the lack of professionalism, compassion and care from the Night Shift staff at this facility would be a huge understatement!!!! She still hears the resident screaming…

If you can avoid this facility, then do. We had few choices where to place my mother after a bad fall. Every day we questioned our decision to keep her at Mount Vernon Healthcare Center. She became comfortable with her CNA and so we were fearful of upsetting her with change when it took so long for her to adjust initially. Be aware that these issues are not due to the pandemic, this is the norm. This place has so many issues that are alarming. If you expect communication about your loved one, you may not have anyone answer your call. You would think that you might at least get a recording telling you that you have reached the facility. But this is not the case, the phone will ring at least 30 times and then you get hung up on. If you do get through, you may or may not get connected with a person. Often you need to leave a message if the inbox isn’t full, and you may or may not get a phone call back even if you talk to a person and they need time to find out the answer to your situation. This includes the nurses. My mother passed away last week. We were not given any notice that her health had declined to such a point that she was possibly living her last days. We were fortunate that we set up an in-person visit with her (that almost got cancelled because they were doing construction – figure out a plan B, MV!) and found that he condition had dramatically changed since we saw her 2 weeks prior. She couldn’t speak, eyes glazed over, couldn’t hold a fork for her to have a piece of birthday cake. And NOONE let us know about the change. Remember, it’s a pandemic. We can’t get in to check on her. Even if it wasn’t a pandemic, you would expect a call to be informed of a decline in health. By the way – don’t get me started about how they handled the pandemic. She died two days later. We were able to see her after she passed to say good-bye. We were floored by the condition of her room. We discovered unopened mail from as far back as June. It’s October. NOONE helped her opened mail that contained pictures and mementos intended to cheer her up and keep her engaged with family. In addition there were vases of completely dead flowers. SERIOUSLY, not one person could take the time to throw out dead flowers – even the social worker. How disgusting! Given that she couldn’t hold a fork the day we saw her, we have serious doubts that anyone was taking the time to feed her. Given that there was an unopened toothbrush that we gave the facility, we have serious doubts that anyone was helping her brush her teeth. Given that there was unopened mail, we have serious doubts that anyone was engaging her to ease the feelings of isolation she most certainly was experiencing. Over the years we’ve had meetings where we have expressed our concerns. They nod their heads and say “you’re right”, we should be better. We have even complained to the co-operate office, but nothing ever changed. Bottom line – this place is a living nightmare. Be sure to check the dates of reviews.

This review is for the skilled rehab program at Mt Vernon located at 8111 Tis Well Dr in Alexandria, VA. The admissions person was great. After that my mother struggled with the bed, food, nursing staff and rehab. Worst of the lot was the case manager who never returned calls. The doctor saw her only on the first day, for 2 minutes. No communication with the family at all. The nurse practitioner said that the patient was fine, even though there were alarming levels in the blood test. She also never returned calls. The rehab head promised a detailed therapy program, a small fraction of which was delivered. The case manager is impossible to reach, does not keep her promises and never calls back. There is no direct phone line in the room, frequently the main operator does not answer. Discharge was a nightmare. No medicines for the next few days were given at checkout, even though arrangements were made a week in advance. Follow up calls were not returned. If you have a choice, go somewhere else.

My mother spent her final days at Mt. Vernon Nursing & Rehab. She was under hospice care and on a feeding tube. I can't say enough good things about the staff and the care that she received here. They treated my mother as if she was their own and always went above and beyond to keep us informed as to her condition. The doctors, nurses, and technicians all became dear friends to our entire family and our family will be eternally grateful for the care they administered to Mom!

My father had to go after hospitalization and our family was very pleased with the staff and cleanliness of the facility. Drew and the rest of the staff in the rehabilitation center were very professional and informative concerning continued rehab once my Dad went home.

We searched for a facility for my step-mother and visited quite a few places in Virginia and some in DC and Maryland. Without question, Mt. Vernon Nursing was the best we visited. This is a 5-star rated facility by Medicare. The staff and the residents seemed happy and the place was immaculate! At the time we visited, they had a group of musicians playing for the residents...it was so satisfying to watch the smiles on the faces of the residents. Their therapy facility was modern and featured the latest equipment. Definitely our top choice for Mom.

REHAB FLOOR: I would think twice before leaving a love one here. The rehab therapist are good. The activities dept does a nice job. The rest of the staff at the facility go through the motions of their job. I didn't find anyone really going above or beyond in helping the patient. Empathy seems to be lacking among the staff. Call buttons for assistance can go unanswered for longer than five minutes. Not impress with the facility at all. Speaking with anyone of authority does not get anywhere.

Kate Dickerson reviewed Mt. Vernon Nursing & Rehab Center — 5 star March 30 · Our experience at Mt. Vernon Nursing was positive and we would recommend this facility. Not only were we impressed with the quality of care provided, but also with the professionalism of the staff. Some of them have been there for more than 20 years! Their experience is reflected in the quality of their work. Thank you MVNRC for all your hard work and the great care you provided my family!

My husband went to Mt. Vernon after a hip replacement surgery. He couldn't walk and was in severe pain. After rehab at Mt. Vernon, he's back to walking and swimming like he never stopped! It's great having him back and now he’s happier than ever!

My mother was admitted to Mt. Vernon Nursing & Rehab Center for therapy rehabilitation. The staff there can only be described as superb, professional and compassionate. It was an outstanding experience and I would recommend this facility to anyone interested in placing their family member for rehab services.

The best decision I ever made was to arrange admission for my elderly sister to go to Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehab Center. She was living in Arlington and could no longer care for herself. I spoke to her doctor and he recommended Mt. Vernon Nursing Center. I signed up for a tour and I was impressed as soon as I entered the building. My sister is now a resident there and she has done remarkably well under their care.

We had a tour of Mount Vernon Nursing Center and were very impressed with the staff and the facility. Afterward, we looked at one another and said “this would be a great place for mom”. After having had poor experiences with other facilities, We realize now that you can pay people to take care of your love one, but you can’t pay someone to care…and that is how we feel about Mount Vernon. My mother is receiving excellent care!

I was the medical surrogate for a person who was a resident at MVNRC for about four months in late 2014 and early 2015. My friend had advanced Parkinson's Disease, and there were a few nursing centers in the DC area that refused to take him, saying that his medical condition was too severe for them to deal with. The people at MVNRC could not have been more caring and comforting to my friend -- and to me. My friend's condition was such that he was bedridden. Because of the Parkinson's, he was very rigid and contracted. The nurses were kind, caring, compassionate, and most of all competent. The CNA's were likewise. I visited my friend daily during his stay at MVNRC, and the nurse call buttons were promptly answered, and needs were attended to. Since my friend ate very little, I cannot comment on the quality of the food, except to say that when the food was served in my friend's room, it always appeared to me to be appealing. The therapy staff was also very good. The front office staff were very helpful, and the social worker who worked with us went out of her way to see that my friend's needs were met. I should also add that prior to coming to MVNRC, my friend was a resident of a nursing home in another state for about two years. MVNRC has a much better staff. I should also add that the MVNRC facility itself was always clean and well-maintained.

I had to go there after knee surgery. Some of the staff was good, the therapy people were great, but the overall experience left me in tears when I thought I might have to stay another day. There were many unanswered call bells, they seldom changed my knee bandages, the food was mostly awful and patients who yelled at night were usually ignored. My husband needs to go to one tomorrow and if there are any alternatives, he will go elsewhere.

My father was admitted there after being in the hospital, and he needed physical and occupational therapy. He also has dementia. At first, the staff was very helpful, especially 2 nurses, and 2 certified nursing assistants. But the second week the nursing assistants didn't answer my father's call bell when I helped him turn it on because he needed to go to the bathroom. I ended up taking him, and he had horrible diarrhea, and was really upset that I cleaned him up. Someone finally came in when I was finished (I had also gone to the nursing station, and I nurse came down the hall to his room, but looked in, and asked me "Where are all the nursing assistants". He never came even though I asked him to. I also saw the nursing assistants talking on their cell phones in the hallway (many times, especially when the patients were eating dinner), and they also talked with each other in the halls very loudly in foreign languages My.father was only there for 3 weeks. He got a blood infection and had to be rushed back to the hospital, where he stayed in intensive care for 5 days. He would have died if I hadn't gotten him out of there. The nurse didn't even know he was sick. Please don't let any of the people you love even consider this place. The only thing good about it was the various therapists. But they could only do so much... I hope this helps people who read this. We need to protect our families. They can't always speak for themselves.

I had a very good friend in this nursing home that stayed for a few years. The certified nursing assistants are fairly good but you had some who had not completed their training and they did not understand there jobs completely. My friend was upset at times because they did not keep her finger nails clean at all times and did not always make sure that her clothes matched and she was very fussy about this. The nurses were wonderful they did their best to keep up with medications and if a patient needed help they came right away. The bed bath that they gave was not as good as it could of been but I believe it was because of new people and maybe they were not used to that kind of stuff with patients. The facility had 2 floors and the most severe was on one floor and the others the next floor which was fairly good so each level had the amount of staff that it needed for that floor. The food was not very appetizing at all much of it was with no salt or flavor and that was a big complaint. The elderly seemed to get along well and played bingo and crocheted things together. Most of the staff was very friendly and always was polite about asking us to leave the room if something needed to be done in private. Overall the facility isn't to bad but does need a few minor changes made to see the residents more happy.
