I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm currently at this facility. I'm in the quarantine wing. Late night care is non-existent as the residents only have use of antiquated call light. There are no buzzers or electronic beeps to notify staff in case of any emergencies. All night long we here the calls and cries of other residents in need of assistance. No one comes. One night we watched a nurse, asleep in the hallway. Meanwhile, a patient had fallen out of bed. Another night, a man coded and was found about an hour later. Fortunately, 911 was called and he was okay after fire and emergency showed. During the day, nurses are attentive, sometimes. They say that once a patient transistors out of quarantine wing, that situations change drastically. I can't wait to see for myself.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I went to to visit a family member. This place seems pretty clean, I think mostly so the staff is comfortable moreso than the resident's. They care but I'm not sure they are medically trained. While visiting my family member The Roommate said when we arrived that she needed to be changed. Two hours later the woman still need it to be changed. She had gotten one of the staff's attention to let her know the staff member told her that "she can wait". There was an older guy roaming the halls and had entered the room and was taking their food from their trays. We informed staff that he needs to be taken away and out of the rooms and watched they walked him away but he returned less than five minutes later. That's not safe. He could have easily attacked either of the women in the room. When it's mealtime they drop the food off and do very little to assist with eating. Because both people in the room were bed bound the bathroom in the room was disgusting there wasn't soap and full of medical supplies. From what I saw there isn't very much exercising of the people who are in bed my family member had began to draw into a "W" shape. Also of the three days that I was there her clothes had not been changed period of the six hours that I was there no one came to check her. Overall the staff members are very friendly but also very useless.

I visited this facility

After looking at other facilities, our family chose to put my mother in Afton Oaks - it was the cleanest facility we had looked at, and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. My mother has been there for years. Perfect? No, every facility will have its pimples, but on the whole, my mother has been well care for. The administration has been responsive to mine and mom's needs, when problems have been brought to their attention. My family has been difficult to deal with at times, and they have dealt patiently with the situation. Mom has consented to allow my sisters to take over her care and they have chosen to move Mom to a different facility, where they have more control. My mother slipped off her bed in January, suffering a broken arm, and the resulting trauma almost killed her. We entered her into a hospice program, and when one of her nurses returned from an illness and found this out, she was devastated and I had to comfort her in the hallway. She had just gotten in my mother's face (literally, because Mom is pretty much blind and very hard of hearing) and encouraging her to get better. Seeing how close she had gotten to my mother touched me, and she isn't the only one who's going to miss Mom when she is moved soon. The administration, as I said, has always been helpful to me in handling her affairs. The staff has been, for the most part, attentive. The Dean of Nursing is an absolute animal about preventing bedsores; despite Mom's inability to move much, she has not had a single sore or pressure wound. The DON actually came to visit my mother in the hospital, after her shift. She fed Mom, visited with her, and together we inspected Mom and found several pressure wounds threatening to becomes open bed sores. She wasn't required to do this. Mom was also visited by her occupational therapist from Afton Oaks.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Afton Oaks Healthcare and Rehab seems to be clean, but they don't change the sheets very often. The first week I marked the sheets, and it went from one Friday to another Friday before they changed it. The food is pretty good, the only thing is that breakfast is always the same; one egg, one big sausage, and one piece of bread, that is it. Some of the staff has good attitude, like the one who's helping my mom; she is very nice, she helps her a lot. She wasn't eating for a while, because they have lids on the glasses and the bowls, and she couldn't take any of that off. All they did was drop off her meal tray and leave. She couldn't remove the lids from the glasses, so she couldn't have her tea, water, or soup. she can't cut the meat either, so she needs help cutting the meat, but she won't eat it because no one will help her. She was like that for a couple of days until she told me what was going on. After that, I told them she needs help, and that that's why she keeps returning her food. The only reason we put her at Afton, is because that was where my grandmother and her uncle had both been together. That was why she wanted to go there, and now she wants out.
