My friend in Portland has a friend that lives at The Stafford, so she called me up and we went there. This place is hands down THE Retirement Community of SW Portland. When you’re caring for an elder, proximity is almost your first factor. It’s hard enough as is to add extra driving time to visit your loved one. The process of aging is nothing but exhausting. The Stafford was very nice. The food was good. The staff we met were friendly, but it was very dark and the people weren't active in the community. When you walk in the door, you don't get a feeling of home. You get a feeling of more of a hotel and that wasn't what my friend was looking for. The Stafford is where I'm planning to put my husband eventually, but right now, they don't have any assisted living vacancies. Aside from independent living, it also has assisted living, and it allows outside caregivers to come in. The staff that I met during the tour was nice, both the marketing people and the concierge at the desk were excellent. My mother is in Stafford. She had been in the independent part since the facility opened seven years ago. So, she knows the staff, and a lot of friends are still there. They also had a perfect survey. They are just very nice people to work with. They got activities. It is a small unit with only 12 apartments, so everybody has their own apartment, and I was able to move all of her furniture in. The staffing ratio is very good, and they're very kind to her. We have been here at The Stafford for six years now. We chose this one because it is near where my husband's children live.
