I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I had my husband at Altenheim Senior Living. He developed sores on his elbow and his butt, and they didn't take care of him properly. They gave up on his physical therapy, so I was very unhappy there. They said that he wasn't responding, and they weren't going to do anything. Well, you can't have a patient just lay there and do nothing. They needed to improve the rehab because my husband had a stroke, and needed rehab, but they didn't do anything. They just let him sit there. They're supposed to have an hour of rehab when he was there, but I'm lucky if he had 15 minutes. Their meals were pretty good. It was a nice facility, but they didn't do anything for the patients. They had a big courtyard and a dining room, but they didn't have any activities. They were pretty clean over there though.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad has been living at Shurmer Place Memory Assisted Living (Altenheim Senior Living) for almost two years. I am very happy with the quality of care and love he has been given, and the respect he has been shown, while there. Shurmer Place MAL Executive Director Beth S. has very high standards for this facility and this is reflected in her staff (which, for the most part, has seen very little turnover in the last two years since Shurmer opened.) The nursing staff is very professional and attentive to the Shurmer residents. The companions and the activities, dietary, housekeeping, and reception employees are likewise very warm and caring toward the residents. All of the staff is very responsive to family members' questions or concerns about their loved ones. Even now, although I cannot visit my dad because of restricted visiting due to the coronavirus pandemic, I am confident that he is being well cared for by the very competent and compassionate employees at Shurmer.

Other

Altenheim provided our mother with high quality care. What impressed us the most about the staff was their commitment to the residents and their length of employment with Altenheim. This is hard work and the Altenheim staff is caring and dedicated.

Shurmer Place at Altenheim is awesome. The place looks nice, and my dad likes most of the nurses. They're caring and are people-persons. He actually likes the food and the dining area. He is there to do physical therapy and rehab. The place is really clean, but the cost wasn't a great value because my dad doesn't want to go back.

I visited this facility

My mother spent 6 wonderful years at Shurmer Place and I have nothing but positive feedback regarding both their staff and what they provide for their residents. My mother was very happy there while my family and I were also at peace she was being looked after and accomdated to. My family is forever grateful!

I visited this facility

Shurmer Place at Altenheim was beautiful. The rooms were very clean, updated, and had beautiful views from the rooms and a very nice courtyard. We didn't eat there, but the tour was very nice. They had bingo, card games, and exercises going on. There's a whole month schedule of activities. The staff who assisted me was very nice.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother suffered a stroke while living at Shurmer Place in March 2017. I was called five hours after she had blatant signs of mental status change, noted in progress notes, only to find her in the dining room when I arrived. She was responding appropriately but could not speak in full sentences and had visual disturbance. These are signs of stroke. Taking her to dinner was a huge mistake as she could have choked. The director at Shurmer Place tried to convince me that because she was responding appropriately they felt she was in no immediate danger. This is very bad practice and very poor nursing judgement. I cannot find any evidence that they did anything for my mom after the initial finding. This is heartbreaking and disturbing as my mother lived there for two years and they knew her well. Also know that medical POA has the right to medical records. The elderly population are at increased risk for stroke so make sure staff is knowledgeable of signs and symptoms and know their policy. Staff at Shurmer Place should have notified provider/family at the first sign of altered mental status. One prompt phone call could have changed the outcome for my mom.

I visited this facility

We are moving my mom to Shurmer Place at Altenheim because it is closer to where we live. It just seems like the food is better and the facility is a better lit for her. She is getting a brand new room there. The staff is very friendly. They take them on tours -- for instance, they go down to some of the stores or take them out on a picnic, so they do get them out pretty often. The place had more of a homey feeling; the walls are wall papered, for example, and the lighting looks homier.

This facility is wonderful. It is always a pleasant place to be. They treat the residents with care and compassion. They are always available and welcome talking about any concern regarding your loved one. My father is happy at his "home away from home" and I am comforted knowing he is receiving wonderful care.
