Athenian Assisted Living seemed very clean and very quiet because all the residents at the time were in lockdown. I really didn't get the feel too much of the place. Otherwise, it seemed to offer quite a bit though as far as what my father would need. It had a big variety of levels of care. The studio apartment looked good. The things that they offered seemed good. The only negative thing was it was a little dark inside. The lighting was on the dark side, which I didn't care for. It needed to be brighter for older people. Otherwise, what it offered seemed very good and the pricing seemed good. The staff during the tour was very helpful and very informative. The kitchen was closed. They were feeding the clients in their rooms.

I was just impressed that Athenian Assisted Living was clean, and the different people I spoke to seemed very friendly. The residents seemed quite content. We're really excited about the place. The staff knew what she was doing, and she covered all the bases. They had all the different activities for them. They had a beauty shop and laundry facilities. You could either do laundry there, have them do it, or take it on your own. The food service could take meals in their room if they wanted to or they could go down to meal. Different things are available most of the day for them.

I had my mother in law there for about six months. At first they were very nice. I gave them two stars for this reason and I think that everyone who goes there to put a loved one into one of these places should be aware of. I have worked at nursing homes most of my adult life and I have NEVER come across this before. When visiting we NEVER saw a nurse or a nursing assistant on her floor. The only time we did see a head nurse was when we wanted to discontinue the use of a wheelchair that my mother in law was using because she didn't need it and the doctor told her she should use her leg instead of relying on the wheelchair which would weaken her leg. Athenian didn't want to hear that. I felt like they just didn't want to take the time to make sure that she was as independent as possible or follow her doctor's instructions.. The second reason I gave it a two star was a REALLY important one. Her daughter was visiting one day and as usual all residents get a panic button in the event something happens and they need help. My sister in law pushed the button and waited 20 minutes no one came, pushed it a second time waited 20 more minutes no one came, she pushed it again... finally she had to leave, but that it was almost an hour and no one showed to see if she was ok. I was totally shocked about this behavior. The last thing that angers me was the fact that when we finally had to move my mother in law to a different facility her daughter had to go in to get papers that the new facility needed. The person at the front desk was VERY VERY rude and unprofessional had my sister in law in tears when leaving. This is a very nice facility they did do things for my mother in law that helped her like taking her meals to her room when she couldn't get down to the dining room, they tried to get her to socialize more and they did send her to therapy when needed. If you never worked at a facility like this you need to talk to the residents and make pop visitations, even then you don't get the whole story.. sorry to say.

My mom is at the Athenian. It is a very nice place. The dining room is nice. They have activities for them, and the room is beautiful. The food is very good. They have a lot of activities. They have bingo, crafts, and music for them, and they go out to stores if the residents are able.

The Athenian assisted living is a great option for people living in Ohio. My family and I toured several assisted livings for my grandmother when she had an injury and could not live at home. Of the numerous places we toured, The Athenian was by far the best option. It has a great group of people working there and everyone is always friendly and attentive. It also has beautiful walking trails and the community as a whole is truly wonderful. It feels more like a retirement community than an assisted living. However, it is not cheap. If you are on a budget(like we are) then making the payments can be difficult. We talked to our insurance company and were able to get a discounted rate, however, that would be an option for others who cannot afford the steep prices as well. However it is an amazing place overall. I truly would check it out if you are near North Royalton.
