I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I chose Catawba Valley Assisted Living for my husband. I'm very satisfied overall with the facility. The room that he's in is airy and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and they seem to be taking very good care of him. He likes the food. He just told me today that the food is very good, and he's enjoying it. They have activities, but I think they're still very limited right now because of COVID. They have an activity director. My husband seems to be as satisfied as he can be, given the particular shape he's in now.

My husband has been in Catawba Valley Assisted Living for awhile now. They have an excellent staff. I've been very pleased with them. The dining hall is very nice. The food is good. They're very accommodating. My husband never has to wait when he has a need. They're right there to take care of him. Medicines are given on time. Meals are served when they say they're going to be served. He just gets the care that he needs and I'm very pleased with that. He is a very picky eater and he doesn't like a lot of different things, but he likes the sandwiches. The dining area is always clean and very orderly. They have it decorated nicely with very comforting colors. My husband's room is fine. He has one of the larger rooms. They're either private or semi-private rooms. There are no apartments and no kitchen facilities, but I don't have a problem with that. He doesn't need a kitchen anyway. They have activities normally every day. Of course they can't now because of COVID, so there are still restrictions. When there are no restrictions, they have musical groups who come in, they do crafts, they have bingo, and they have shopping trips for anyone who wants to go. In the fall they go to the mountains for picnics. They had huge Christmas dinners for families. I have a little bit of an issue with the corporate office on some things that involved money. That's the biggest problem I have right now.

I visited this facility

In my opinion the rooms and overall facility are in poor condition. The assisted living facility had a strong foul odor. I would suggest to any persons to try it out for a week and make sure to taste the chef prepared meals!

My Mom lives here and I am very upset that they won’t let me visit. The folks in charge at the government have said that these places can have porch/ outdoor visits but the new person in charge is not allowing it I was shopping for a new place to move my Mom to before they stopped letting visitors in and I am very concerned now because I can’t see my mom. I know she was not being taken care of, and now no one is letting new people move in. They should have to follow the rules the government puts out and let me see my mom! I have complained but the new person in charge just blew me off and told me I did not know what I was talking about ! I plan on moving my mom out as soon as I can ! It used to be a great place but not anymore. They don’t take good care of the people that live there.

My Father has lived there for many years. I have found it to be a wonderful experience for him as well as myself. The staff - from the housekeeper to the administrator all show genuine caring and affection for the people who live there. It is a wonderful place and I recommend it to anyone who has to place their mom or dad somewhere.

My mom lives at Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn for many years now. She is very happy there, and I am too. The staff are kind, caring, and go out of their way to help in any way they can. The management staff are very involved, and it shows that they care about the residents. I have referred many people to them, and all of them are happy there as well. I don't have to worry that my mom is being taken care of, because I know she is in the best place around! She is very active in the activities they have, and she loves the food. She has made many friends there. The place is always clean and smells good.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I WAS VISITING A FRIEND HERE AND I HAD TO END UP TAKING HER OUT FOR SUPPER BECAUSE SHE WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE FOOD BEING AWFUL, THERE WAS A FEW RESIDENTS SCREAMING IN THE HALL FOR HELP, THE CNAS WERE SO BUSY IT TOOK A LITTLE BIT TO GET TO THEM AND CALM THEM, THE AIR CONDITIONING ON 200 HALL IS BROKE AND HAS BEEN FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS NOW, IT WAS 85 DEGREES IN THE HALL, I COULD NOT TAKE IT MUCH LONGER, I DONT SEE HOW THEY CAN LET IT BE THAT HOT IN THERE FOR THE RESIDENTS AND THE STAFF. WHILE WE WERE OUT MY FRIEND WAS ASKING ABOUT A NEW PLACE SO WE ARE LOOKING AROUND. HOPE TO FIND HER SOMETHING SOON.

Poor management, administrators never available during middle of day because she goes out to lunch for several hours everyday. They are very understaffed for the type of residents they have now. I thought Rock Barn would be true assisted living but alot of residents are being fed by staff in the dining room and then residents are left in hallways wet, hollering etc. They continue to have alot of staff turnover and some family members have went to corporate and complained about the administration but nothing has been done. Guess it just about the money to them. I do not recommend taking your family here. We are im process of moving ours out.

The community is in poor condition, always smells of urine, residents left alone in hallways sleeping in wheelchairs wet smelling of urine. There has been two fires in the building, one because of a resident smoking, repairs have not been completed. Peeling paint, floors are always dirty. Baseboard is missing 100 hall and rooms, molding exposed. Rooms are dirty and bathrooms smell. Lack of management. Activities are great that is a plus, Carol is a great activities manager. Business office manage is very nice and helpful. The executive director has poor management skills, always found her in her office eating food that is from the dinning room which is for the residents. Residents complain the food is cold and not many choices. The community is a assisted living community but the residents look like they should be in a memory care unit or skilled nursing. We moved our family member out. It always seemed the caregivers had to many residents to care for and not enough help.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn is a very clean facility and it's fairly new. I know some of the staff there, which was a strong factor. They have different levels. They can be very independent and there can be some assistance. There are a lot of areas for the residents to go. In the middle of the ground is the actual garden. They will have a vegetable garden where residents can pick vegetables. They have a beautiful sunroom. They have a piano there and nice furniture. They have a really nice game room. This facility is connected with a golf course. The chef that is currently cooking at the facility used to cook at the country club. There is a lot of perks because it's connected with the golf course community. Our experience has been very positive. My mom likes the food and there's a variety. It has a very friendly environment. She has been able to go in and they connect and make friends. They will move you around at the dining room tables if you don't like a certain resident.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I visit my aunt every week at Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn. She's going to be 105 and gets around pretty good, but does have some dementia and can't hear or see well, so she is not really involved in anything. She broke her arm and has a cast on. They watch her, make sure she gets herself to bed, help her get dressed, and bathe her. They're really good. She has been there since middle of November.

Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn is an excellent facility. The staff is fine. My sister is in a private room, and it is adequate. The dining room is fine. The facility is clean, and there is no odor. It is up-to-date. The rates are reasonable.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother is a resident here. This is a wonderful facility. The staff are very caring and attentive to the residents. The physical surroundings are very nice and uplifting. It is small enough to feel like home but large enough for the residents to have many social contacts. I am in and out of the facility quite often so I see what goes on. I am very happy and comfortable that my mother is here. We were lucky to find this facility.

Like the rest of their facilities it was in very good condition. Since you need to be able to do a lot for yourself to be there, you did not walk in and have this mournful feeling wash over you. Obviously not having to be in a place like that at all is the ideal situation, but if you were to ever need to place someone you cared about in a home that is not their own, I would recommend Catawba Valley Living.
