I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We (my mother, my sister, and I) had been familiar with the Evergreens for many years. It was just down the road from Mom’s house, and we passed it virtually any time we were headed to Moorestown. And my mom had always said that when the time came for her to move, that was where she was going. Still, I don’t think she had had any official contact, although she had visited a friend in assisted living many times. When her husband passed, we wanted to find a place quickly as she was uncomfortable living alone. The Evergreens (technically The Acts at the Evergreens) was able to provide multiple tours on short notice, and when the decision was made to apply for residence, the staff were helpful and informative about the process. We were able to go from touring the grounds to residency in about 2 months. I have been nothing but impressed with everything about the place. The staff are friendly, helpful, and compassionate. The residents have all been welcoming and encouraging to a newcomer learning the ropes. The food is good. The facility and its amenities are excellent. I could not be happier that my mom lives here. It has eased my anxieties of her living alone. I am certain she is in good hands. And I really enjoy visiting!

I visited this facility

I was able to see Evergreens. They had a lot of people working there, they had a lot of nurses, and they took care of everything. If my mother was in assisted living, I would say that's where she should be, but she needs special care. The Evergreens was my favorite and they had everything. They had gyms and even a pool, but in the nursing home I don't like what they have there for what my mother needs.

Provider Response

Dear Cheryl, thank you for your visit and taking the time to leave us a review.

I visited this facility

Evergreens is a beautiful senior apartment. I just viewed the one-bedrooms and their rental was pretty much in my area, but I had to have a large sum of money in holding insurance and I didn't have that. As I walked through the front door, they have an information desk with about three workers there and there was a hallway that you can sit and relax, and on the left side is a cafeteria where you can eat and order your food daily. The elevator will take you up to the second floor where I went to see the first apartment. The one-bedroom apartment had a kitchenette, a living room, a dining area, and a patio, and it was pretty nice. They have shows, a theater, a pool, a game room, an exercise room, a church area, a fitness area, and they have doctors and nurses. Everything was beautifully clean and laid out very well. The staff that I saw working there was very helpful when I asked questions, and they were on their p's and q's of doing their job and they wear uniforms, so I know who they were. They have gorgeous food. When I ate there, I had asparagus and salmon, which were cooked very well. They had potatoes, and they had cheesecake.

I visited this facility

Evergreens is a buy-in, but they gave us a lower rate. I like them better than the other community I visited. It's a very nice place, and the person who helped me during the tour was very friendly. Their dining area was nice, but it was not as fancy as the community I've chosen. I've observed a lot of walking, there are trails everywhere, and it's literally the only thing I saw anybody doing. I think they also have an art studio. I wasn't impressed with the layout; it was very tricky.

I am/was a resident of this facility

Been here a year and a half. Best decision I have ever made. The food is so good I gained weight. It is small enough that I have gotten to know everyone and feel like we are an extended family. Healthcare is available at the touch of a button, and the staff is wonderful.

I visited this facility

The Evergreens was very pleasant. The food was not great, but the staff was marvelous and invited me back for lunch, which I think is very nice. However, their costs were above my means. It's very nice and small, beautifully appointed, and everybody is very friendly. They just didn't have the unit for me at the price I wanted to pay. They have an Episcopalian church, which is nice, and a pool.

I am/was a resident of this facility

As a resident of The Evergreens, I was surprised to read a negative review on this site from someone who apparently was the very angry adult child of a deceased elderly parent. Perhaps our story will help to put matters into a different perspective. My wife and I made the decision to come to The Evergreens when her Alzheimer’s disease had progressed to the point where it was no longer practical for us to remain in our home of 48 years. It was not a decision entered into lightly. We discussed it with our three adult children, and they were uniformly supportive. In fact, having watched us struggle with the care issues connected with their grandparents, each of them endorsed our decision and expressed some sense of relief. We have been here for just about a year and a half, and during that time we have become part of a community of caring people, both residents and staff. I have been very pleased by the quality of life and the responsiveness of the management, not just to our needs, but to the needs of every resident. Eight months ago, when it became apparent that my wife needed more support than could be achieved in our apartment, the staff organized a smooth transition for her into assisted living. I remain in the apartment, but I am able to be with her as often as both of us want, and I have the peace of mind of knowing that she is receiving the support and assistance she needs when I am not with her. There are a range and variety of activities for her, and her life fuller than it has been in several years. There is a range of activities here for me as well, and I feel free to participate or not depending on my interest. There is no pressure to conform (although I am still hesitant to wear jeans to dinner in the dining room). Speaking of the dining room, the food here is really good. There is a significant variety – five regular entrees and three special entrees at dinner each evening. If I don’t feel like eating in the dining room, I can get a full take out meal, or I can get an a la carte dinner at the less formal Atrium Café, either eat-in or take out. My only food problem has been ice cream. I have little will power in this department, so we did not regularly keep it around the house. Here it is available every night for dessert, and it is really good. Back to activities. There are trips, special events, concerts, and all manner of programs, going on here all the time. I happen to like to garden and was enthusiastically welcomed into the community’s garden group. I never had access to a greenhouse until coming here, and this spring was an adventure in growing things from seed, like tomatoes – I went a little nuts with seven different varieties – jalapeño peppers, and lots of different flowers. We had a great season and as I post this, my fellow gardeners and are getting the garden ready for winter. We are already talking about what we are going to plant next year. I could go on, but I think the point has been made. I am very happy to be here. I know the decision was the right one for the whole family, and we have peace of mind. At the same time, now that my wife is being well cared for, I have been able to resume outside activities that I was forced to curtail when she became ill. I see old friends regularly, attend meetings of clubs and organizations that I have been part of for many years, and am pretty much free to come and go as I please. I have not experienced any of the money issues that the other reviewer has complained about, and I have not spoken with any resident here who has. All the terms and conditions governing life here are spelled out in the very specific agreement that each resident signs before coming here. The marketing staff was very clear in explaining the terms of the contract as we were making our decision. I had our attorney review the document before signing and understand that if we have to be hospitalized or are away from the facility, charges will continue, just like rent or mortgage payments on your home continue when you have to be away. On the few occasions when we had to get something fixed, maintenance has been prompt, accommodating, and very friendly. We have never been billed unreasonably. Very important to us is that we have the security of knowing that when we need it, there is a superb medical staff on the premises – a full-time board certified geriatric physician, a staff of round-the-clock RNs, and lots of health care workers. Fortunately, we have only had a couple of colds, but when either of us has felt unwell, our physician has seen us promptly. And, probably most important, we are guaranteed whatever assisted living or skilled nursing care support we may need when we need it right here at The Evergreens at no extra charge. Finally, a number of my friends who are still in their own homes have expressed concern about the cost of coming here. My family has never lived extravagantly. Our house was paid off, so we did not have super high costs when we were in our own home. I did have some concerns about finances myself, but I have been pleasantly surprised to find that when I look at the expenses for the two of us living here and compare them with the expenses of being in our own home (taxes, insurance, utilities, food, maintenance, grass cutting, snow removal, etc., etc.) the cost differential is only a little over $1,000 a month. That $1,000 is buying us security, comfort, and a sense of well being which is unlike anything I have experienced in my adult life. To my wife, myself, and our entire family, it is worth every penny. For people like us who are in their 70s and starting to feel it, The Evergreens is a great place to be.

I am a friend or relative of resident

It was nice when Dad first moved in. They wine you and dine you and once they got you, they will nickle and dime you to death. They increase the monthly fee by 4-6% annually, take every penny you have and even when you die they are still billing you for services not received! The staff is very nice and friendly. I don't have anything to say bad about them but management is cold, heartless and focused on money, money, money. Do your homework folks.

The Evergreens is very welcoming. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is very kind. There are many things for the residents to do on the grounds. The residents are also free to leave the facility with a chaperone and explore the town. My uncle was part of the independent living facility for a time before being moved to the assisted living section. He had a lovely apartment that was just big enough for him and a guest. The staff is very involved with their residents and they treated my uncle like he was family. I felt like he received the best possible care. Every time I walked into The Evergreens, the receptionist always greeted me with a kind, warm smile. The executives, nurses, and staff were always plesant to speak with and I never had any issues. My uncle really enjoyed living here and always raved about their excellent desserts!
