I do not recommend this place. Communication and transparency is just horrible and unacceptable. My mother has lived here 4 years (just recently into their memory care) and I feel very unwelcome by staff (newer staff) as turnover is very high. Some are just plain rude. Senior director ignored my message of concern and to speak with him. And they refused accountability/ liability for something a nurse broke in mother's home. She deserves better, and so do I, for her., we are very close, I don't feel she's getting good care. The studio's are very small, especially those in memory care, compared to the studio's in the assisted living units. Memory care is sectioned off/locked from the rest of the building, it feels like a locked up environment. I am checking into a better facility for her.

Elder Homestead was a smaller place, but it's not real welcoming. When you come in, they were short of staff. We were not on the list to be visiting, so they weren't aware; I don't blame them. I think it came from whoever set that up. The individual room in the memory care area was very nice. We liked that, but the living room space where they congregated was very tired. It was just pretty close to zero. The residents were sitting watching TV at that point. That could have been the hour of the day because it was 10:00 in the morning. They had an activity calendar. I don't know what their food was like. The gal who gave us the tour did fine, but that was probably not her normal job. It's hard to judge the people living there. I had the feeling that the place was pretty much always full. They only had one room available, so I don't think they have a problem keeping it full. It really would depend on the individual or the family going into that location because maybe they like the smallness of it or the more intimate feeling of it. For our particular individual, it was not a suitable place. They were short on staff, but they were doing what they had to do. They had some pluses, but that one room where the memory care people spent their sitting time together was a disappointment.

We went to the Elder Homestead. They have studios that were way, way too small. It was a teeny, tiny kitchenette area, and there was one closet that was very narrow to the point where you would even wonder if hangers would fit. There were absolutely no other places for bedding, towels, or extra clothing. There was enough room for a bed and a dresser. I have a lift chair; it could be crammed in there, but that would be it. I was never told anything about any activities; I assumed they had them. It looks like a nursing home. Everybody goes out and dines outside of their own room, but it was only 209 square feet, she said, which doesn't give you much space for living. I would not want to be out in the common areas all the time. That room would be very depressing, as small as it was. There was no space. I was shown two very large rooms where they do bingo, church services, birthday celebrations, and that kind of stuff. They do have a large porch area and a small backyard where somebody had come out and planted flowers. It was very pleasant looking, and it was fairly updated, but the room was just so tiny it didn't feel homey. It felt more like a nursing home room.

Elder Homestead has studio-type rooms with big handicap showers and baths. The staff and meals are very good. They have all kinds of stretching and moving activities, singing, and board games. The place feels very homey.

My parent was a resident in the memory care unit and it was the worst experience that we have ever had. It was dirty, aids were rude and didn't care for the residents. The Director was very nice but did not know how to manage her employees. I moved my parent out as soon as I found a new place and what a differance. My Parent is always smiling and never cries anymore. Find somewhere else to bring your loved one.
