Rockville, Maryland, has a population of a little less than 70,000 people, about 15 percent of whom are seniors. According to the Alzheimer's Association, this is the demographic most often affected by Alzheimer's disease, which is the top cause of dementia. Roughly 110,000 people in Maryland are currently diagnosed with this disease.
To meet the needs of seniors with dementia, the state provides memory care services in assisted living facilities, which are officially called assisted living programs. Rockville is home to nine memory care facilities, and there are 30 more nearby. These facilities, as well as all facilities in the state, are licensed by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
