Throughout the state of Connecticut, more than 75,000 seniors have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As 17.2 percent of its 26,000 residents are aged 65 years and older, the town of South Windsor and its surrounding communities offer eight memory care facilities for seniors with cognitive impairments. In Connecticut, these facilities are known as Alzheimer's Special Care Units (SCUs) and are specially licensed by the state's Department of Public Health to provide care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
