Of the close to 1,000,000 people living in Fresno County in 2017, 12 percent were 65 years of age or older. Of these seniors, about 11 percent were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. Because these diseases are progressive, affected seniors require more intensive care over time. While the decision to move into memory care is never an easy one, it may be the best choice for many seniors and their families.
In Fresno County, there are 12 different memory care facilities, called Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), from which families can choose. These facilities are licensed by the California Department of Social Services and provide compassionate, dedicated care, primarily to adults 60 years of age and older.
