I am/was a resident of this facility

Recently I spent 6 weeks recovering from spinal surgery. i was skeptical of the place having heard tales about the place. IIchose to look at the stronger aspects of a staff working in covid restrictions. The staff was often short handed but for the most part I was treated with kindness and respect. They were attentive to my heavy pain periods. Many adaptations had to be made for covid, including no visiors, everyone wore masks, and weekly nasal swabs were done. Vaccinated patients were separated from unvaccinated. The physical and occpational therapists had to rearrange rooms ito allow for therapy. 2 wheelchairs, 2 commodes,e 2 walkers, 2 dinner trays.. hd to be rmoved in order to do some therapy. The therapists were wonderful and personable; they really worked with me when they saw how motivated I was. It takes a special type of person to be in the health field, to be care providijng. There will always be a few who shouldn/t be in this profession. There will always be some complaints about food or rundown conditions. However, one's attitude and adapting to a situation wilil ultimately determine if yoU had a good stay. i s grateful for the care I received.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The administration at this place is over his head with his job. He interferes a lot in things that don't concern him. I wanted to bring my grandfather to this place but after a friend of mine came home and told me of how a nurse gave her insulin without checking her blood sugar and she almost collapsed and not even being apologetic about it. There are some few good nurses my friend (she died 2 months ago) talked about while she was there especially the isolation nurses Buni, Jeneba and another nurse that went over and beyond for her and also Victor the aide.. Nurses that show empathy and not shallow empathy. I will go thru her diary because she kept a record of names of nurses and aides who were helpful and nice to her and forward it to SAVA CORPORATE OFFICE and these nurses need to be appreciated and encouraged.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Run......do not even think of going to this facility if you love your patient. The facility is dirty. My husband who was there recuperating for rehab after brain surgery begged them for rubber gloves so he could clean the bathroom which he shared with 4 other people. Water leaked from the bathroom and they claimed the patients wet the floor....the floor was flooded in the bathroom and ran out into the his room where they threw towels down and didn't bother to mop the floor, a fall hazard and he was listed as a fall risk. He had to hold onto to the wall, bed, etc. to get to the bathroom and the therapist mentioned this to me when I questioned why he wasn't given a walker to use. You never see the doctor except for the first day you arrive, after that he only talks with the nurses and reads the patient's file. He had to have stitches removed after his brain surgery and they didn't know how to do it and the girl had to go get someone to help her. He complained of feeling sutures still in his head and we found that they missed some. He was suppose to be on a cardiac/diabetic diet and received fruit juices and high carb meals every day. The first day he had to go out to see the oncologist, he was gone from 11 until about 6 p.m. and when we got back there were two trays of food left in his room. He was so hungry and got back in ahead of us and ate the lunch tray which had been there since noon. It was a hot turkey sandwich. I was so afraid of food poisoning. When we asked why they left the tray there, the aide said she just wanted to let him know she brought his lunch tray!!! If you understand Jamacian, you will do fine since 95% of the staff is from Jamaica. People have free range of your room and we had things stolen even with his room being right outside of the nurses station. He was there for 8 days when we questioned why he hadn't had a change of sheets. We had to take our own disinfectant sheets in to clean his trays and night stand. Smoking is allowed there and the first thing you smell when you walk in the door is smoke in the hallway. They claim you can smoke because it is a resident facility and not a hospital. However, the smokers go outside by an automatic door and smoke and anyone walking down the hall walks over the tripper and lets the smoke in when the door opens. He had to wait a week before he could get his TV fixed which was broken from day one. All in all, I wouldn't take a dog there. Rehab was not consistent. It wasn't until he was about to be discharged (after I questioned the doctor when I caught him out at the nurse's station one day as to why he didn't see him personally instead of reading files and how did he know how to treat patients if he never saw them) that rehab was bumped up to and hour and a half at a time instead of regular times each day tiring him out. Then we suddenly were discharged........The first day there, we arrived late in the evening and he had come from the hospital directly to the rehab center. We asked if he could get something to eat since he hadn't eaten all day. They brought him a tray with a filet of fish on it and I explained that that was the one food he wouldn't eat, could they get him a sandwich or something else other than that and I was told it wasn't like it was a restaurant and you could order what you wanted. So he didn't get any replacement and he didn't eat the fish. This place should be closed down, it is only run for profit and not for the care of the elderly or sick. Please don't use this facility. I found out later people had passed away there due to infections, lack or care etc. I was so glad to get him home and still am going to report them to Dept. of Aging

I visited this facility

Its not easy being in a situation where you need a nursing home but the transition was smooth and my mother is being taken care of. I couldnt ask for a better place for my mom to call home

I visited this facility

The facility was pretty decent. I've been in a few others before and this one was rather clean and had a positive feel to it. I happened to visit on a Sunday and was able to sit in on Sunday service. There was a small praise band that visited with the seniors to sing and worship. They were all about trying to get the seniors involved in the music and to dance or clap along with their songs. Also the employees there would walk the seniors around the facility or push them in their chairs if they were immobile while holding nice positive conversations. In my honest opinion, if I ever needed to stay in a nursing home, I would have no problem staying at Mariner Health.Another great point to mention, Baltimore Washington Hospital is only about 100 feet away. This is great because emergency service is just a short jump across the parking lot.
