A Unique Lifestyle – Daily Life

As many caregivers can attest, familiar routines can be reassuring to those experiencing Alzheimer’s Disease or other memory loss. But as the saying goes “variety is the spice of life.” Benton House seeks to blend both of these needs through our Daily Life.

In practice this means while certain aspects of daily living, such as dining, fitness or relaxation, occur at roughly the same time each day, we seek to vary the activities and events within those time periods so each day feels both familiar and fresh.

Ensuring that daily life remains fun and eventful is the responsibility of the Beacon Coordinator, a person dedicated exclusively to the service of the Beacon Neighborhood residents.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Benton House of Douglasville in November. It has been a safe and productive place for her. The staff is very caring and knowledgeable. The food is pretty diverse and appealing. The place is very clean, kept up, open, and very friendly. They do arts and crafts, and music, and they have people come in occasionally. They have a lot going on and they keep them active. I just have the peace of mind that someone else is in charge and accountable, and looking over her well-being every day.

I liked Benton House of Douglasville. If they would have had a lesser time frame for respite care (they had two weeks), that would have been my preference for mom. They were very friendly and professional. I was impressed with their demeanor. I was very comfortable and happy there. I liked that it's all on one level and how the rooms were arranged. I think they were a little bit pricier and somewhat smaller in some ways, but they were nice accommodations. The rooms were clean and neat. They're not old stuff. You could feel comfortable going there or having your loved ones out there.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into the Benton House of Douglasville. We're very pleased with the location and staff. We feel like they provide a very home-type environment for their residents. They have quite a few different activities and other things that they involve with it. The staff was informative. The environment is very friendly and warm. We just have a good experience right now. Their meal planning seems to be very nutritious and enjoyable. It's very well done, very colorful, and healthy at the same time. They seemed to be very involved with the patient. In an effort to bring them into their environment and residency so that they would feel comfortable. I can tell that they tried to treat them individually and not as a group, so that was very important to us. The building itself is very nice. They had different living situations, and we chose the private. They do have two common areas. They are separated by the memory care and assisted living unit because they try to provide what each one of those categories of lifestyle would include.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

A loved one has moved into Benton House of Douglasville. We chose it, one, because it's within ten miles of my home, and I'm my cousin's main caregiver; that was important. Two, they had the largest ratio of nursing assistants or nurses on duty to patients. It's about one in ten, which I felt was very good. They seem very adequate. I have had others who I have known who have loved ones there; they're happy with it. So that told me a lot as well. The staff are all qualified and seem to do a good job, but I'd give them a three because I don't know all the staff yet. She is not particularly happy with the food, and she would like a larger menu or a bigger menu selection. We do feel, however, that they're adequate in the way that they offer menu assistance with no high sugar and no salt because she does have heart issues and diabetes. So, they work on that piece. They really only offer selection with their entrees. They don't offer selection with vegetables or other parts of their food. They have a person who does the activities daily. They do exercise classes every day, they play bingo every day, or at least four days a week, they give out papers to do crossword puzzles, and they go through a listing of what they offer each day, as well as current events that are going on in the world each day to help the residents sort of understand what day of the week it is and that kind of thing. They have a game room. Right now, they're having COVID, so no one's allowed in again, but they were doing things maybe one or two days a week where they would have someone come in from outside and they would have a music hour, or a group come in and have a sing along, and those kinds of things.

I visited this facility

I have been to Benton House of Douglasville. It's a senior living facility, it was very nice, and it was very good. We visited our church family at dinner time, it looked wonderful, the table had tablecloths, and it was very nice, and very clean. The apartment was very nice, it had a little breakfast area, it was very nice, and everything was very clean. They had a kitchenette.

I visited this facility

The rooms at Benton House of Douglasville were really nice; it's pretty large. The memory care has their own common area. They were eating lunch went I went through. It's very clean, very modern, it looked like a new building, and the parking was good. The residents can sit outside, but you pay for what you get, and the price was too much. The staff was helping the residents and talking with them, so you can see they have patience and that they knew what they were doing.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom was at Benton House of Douglasville for 6 months before she moved. It was fine, but it was not culturally conducive for my mother’s needs. The place was clean, the food was good, and the staff was great. The staff was wonderful, they were good, but the person in charge had an attitude. They have bowling and exercise.

I visited this facility

Benton House of Douglasville was wonderful, but it was so huge, and I was looking for something a bit more quaint. It was like a hotel and their rooms were awesome and spacious. The people seemed happy and they spoke to us. The memory care unit was well-staffed and the patients were doing activities. I was enamored by it. The lady who helped us was awesome and really good.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My father-in-law went to Benton House of Douglasville for a trial run, but it didn’t work out. I didn’t like it. The people were very nice, of course, on the surface, but it the place was too big for my father-in-law's needs. It was a very nice facility, and the staff was very nice, but it just wasn’t a good fit for him. There were a lot of women there, but he needed to be around some men. Also, the eventual progression of his dementia would have caused him to be moved to another facility, and that was something that we would not have wanted to do. Benton House was more up-to-date and newer than the other facility we visited, and the staff was amazing. However, I didn’t get that “he is at home” vibe when we walked in there. When we went to see him, he had not been doing any activities at all.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We have visited some facilities, and we have settled on one for my mother-in-law. It is the Benton House of Douglasville. She moved in shortly around the end of January. They have caring people, and it is close to my house. The room is very nice. The staff is very nice and friendly. I don't really know how many she participates in, but they have a lot of different activities offered. She loves the food.

I visited this facility

Benton House seemed to be well done, but it’s more expensive. Nothing really stands out, but it seems to be well-managed and it looked good. The staff seemed helpful and explained their activities and how they manage the facility. The place is not actually big. They have more variety of rooms of different sizes. The dining room looked nice, functional, and orderly. All the residents seemed very happy and content, so based on that it seemed that they’re well-cared for.

I visited this facility

Benton House was beautiful. It was absolutely phenomenally gorgeous place. It had a huge dining area and they also had a subkitchen like if residents wanted to have a cup of coffee or bake cookies or what-not, they were allowed to use that. They have activities. They do take them out. If you can't take them to doctor's visit, they make sure they go. They take them on shopping trips, on day trips, or to the mall. Whatever they need, they will make sure that they're taken care of. They have a beautiful courtyard. The rooms were about the same. They have three different sizes to choose from, but they were a bit more expensive than others. I would definitely recommend this one.
