My father has been in Christian Assisted Living Home since October. I’ve looked at some of the larger facilities that have a lot of amenities that my father who is 97 with not-so-good hearing or vision wouldn’t be able to participate in at all. What I liked about this facility is that there are only eight residents, and it’s a residential home, so it’s not like he’s sitting in a room by himself all day long; all of the residents are in a family room area. I was able to take his recliner over there. They have TV for them to watch or sometimes they have music playing on the TV. During the holidays, they had a guitarist come in and sing. Visitors perform in an area visible from the kitchen area so all the residents, who sit in recliners and most of them unable to walk, can watch the activity that’s going on in the kitchen and talk to any visitor that comes in. They’re not alone. It’s also a hospice, and he’s on hospice right now, too, so there is a hospice nurse that comes in twice a week. The other plus is that it costs only half the amount monthly that I would have to pay in any of those bigger facilities. I do go and visit him every day because, fortunately, it’s only 15 minutes away from me. From what I’m hearing, he’s doing very well. In fact he’s eating more for breakfast and lunch than he was eating when he was living with me for 15 years. And I think he eats pretty well because it’s run by a husband and wife. She’s a nurse, and they check in on their residents all of the time. They’re right there, so that’s what is good. My father lived with me for 15 years, but he was to the point where he was having a lot of falls, and it was very difficult for me because once he fell, I couldn’t get him up. They’re really making sure that that doesn’t happen, and he hasn’t fallen since he’s been there.
